View Full Version : Help is Multigrain Bread ok?
I have been giving my 9/12 month old a piece of multigrain bread toasted for breakfast and the mother's in my playgroup were horrified!
They said I should be only giving wholemeal at this stage because of choking. I'm not sure if this is true as I didn't think the seeds were that big. My DS eats Farex breakfast museli and the oats are quite large with no problems and also I saw somewhere on BH (I think it was Wattle?) that it was ok to give sultanas at this age?
Thanks for your advice :)
Michelle
i have heard this too, and just to be on the safe side i waited till recently to give it to her (she will be one next wk) but if your little one is doing fine on it, i wouldnt worry :)
Hi,
I only occasionally gave DS multi grain, as we are usually rye eaters. But when I did he would never digest the grains properly and they were in his poo.
Is that normal by the way???
I'd never heard about the choking thing though. You would think they would be easily washed down with a drink??

I heard that the grains aren't so great for their digestive system just yet.
Something about them getting caught in there & causing probs? I'm not really sure...
I wouldn't imagine they'd be big enough to cause choking though?? I don't know!!
Maybe JanetF can help us out with this one :)

The grains are tiny, I havent ever heard of anyone choking on them! If your bubba is used to it then thats all that matters.
My only issue with multi-grain is that some of them are actually just whitebread with some grains mixed in. Go for a proper brown or rye multi grain.
Yup, grains and sultanas go straight through my kids too! Never seems to bring them any harm (least I hope not.)

Becky we must have posted at the same time! I havent heard about the digestive system thing.:) I suppose if you look at the size of their intestines and other bits and pieces, the grains are quite large...hmmm. :o

My children have always had multigrain bread. My DS from 9 months and DD from 6 months. The grains are small. For some babies or toddlers, who have strong gag reflexes, it may cause them to cough but I find it hard to believe they would choke on it. For a child to choke, the offending item has to block the windpipe and prevent air coming in or going out and I would think that their windpipes are wider than a grain. I could be wrong ...
My two actually had more trouble with white bread, especially really fresh, as it's gluey as soon as moisture touches it and can easily form lumps in the mouth. Multigrain is separated by the grains.
Thanks for your quick replies lovely ladies!! :)

Hi,

I am going to be really open here, but if you guys eat a really grainy bread you will find that you also will have undigested grains in your bowel motions too. So it is completely normal, especially it little ones to have undigested food in the poo.
I have heard the recommendation to introduce grain bread to babies is around 8 - 9 months as before then they cannot digest the grain as well as they can around 8 - 9 months at a younger age.
Hmm never really looked myself.
But we never really eat it, unless there is no other option.
We LOVE or rye and sour dough breads!
Mmmmm :)

I've never eaten Multigrain bread (oh, except when mum used to make us...) I'm a white bread girl :o But mum has seen a fair few dieticians and naturopaths in her time (skin & allergy probs), and they've told her that multigrain is actually not that nutritious...wholemeal is heaps better, as the grains in the other just go straight through, whereas the wholemeal is already pulverised (can't think of a better word...lol), so digests heaps better.
That being said, we still all eat white in our household :o ....i'll have to get off my butt and give the girls wholemeal...
Thanks Shannon, maybe I will stick with wholemeal. There's just so much conflicting information about what we should all be eating
"They" will probably come out next year and say white is best!

We only buy multigrain so thats all i've ever given my little girl, I think I started toast at about 7 months and she has been fine with it. She actually looks confused when she gets white, as if she's looking for the little "bits" in it.
Thanks Bronwyn,
Yes, it is much easier for the whole family to eat the same type of bread, and it might be harder to get him to change to the healthiest option if he is used to something else.
Your daughter looking for the grains - too cute! :)
I have always given both my babies multigrain bread from about 7 months old with no problems ( crust and all ). I have just started to give my son sultanas ( he is 81/2 months old ) more for the enjoyment that he gets out of trying to pick them up than the nutrition. If he doesnt chew the occasional one it does come out the same way it went in only swollen.
Good luck
Hi Pickles
Yes sultanas are fun for them. Nicole LOVES sultanas and they are the best snack to have in the bag when we are out shopping. I also find them good if we are at someones house and she is going a bit ratty, I just shake the sultana container and she can't get to me quick enough. LOL.
