Hi Ains! I grew up in Kethurst and now live just near you in Castle Hill. Obviously people need to make their own decisions in this regard but for us there was never any doubt that we wanted to go to a private hospital. The closest ones around here are Baulkham Hills Private and the Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAN) at Wahroonga. I had DS at the SAN and cannot speak highly enough of the place. I ended up getting very sick during my pregnancy and was in hospital for a month before DS was induced at 37 weeks and they were just fantastic. So proffessional and so kind. And the support with breastfeeding that I was given after DS was born was just fantastic.

Hi again Ains. Yes the SAN is a private hospital.

Regarding getting to the city in peak hour it takes about an hour and a quarter if you use the toll roads. So its a bit of pain if you have to travel in for work. When its not peak hour it still takes about 45 minutes. Thats one of the few disadvantages though - its a really lovely place to live. Where are you moving from?

And thank you for saying my DS is cute - I have to say I couldn't agree more!!

Thanks melissa,
we are moving from padstow. Hy hubby has an excavation business and it just expanded by a truck and machine! so.....we need more space. Space in sydney is very hard to get so Kenthurst it is!!!!! Would it be realistic to look at RNSH for delivery?

P.s its nearly Nathaniel's Birhtday!!! wow any plans?

I had my first baby at the SAN in 2004 and wont be going back. Hated the place and got not support at all. 2 of my friends had babies there at the same time and got the same experience though I was a doula for a woman there last year and she couldn't recommend it highly enough so perhaps things have changed. Im going Hills Private this time so I can let you know in aprox 3 weeks what that ones like.

Gee you were up early this morning - preparing yourself for motherhood now are you?! (god I miss sleeping in!)

I would be concerned that RNSH would be a bit far if you had a quick labour, particularly if you were trying to get there during peak hour. Its not so far away as to rule it out if thats where you really wanted to go though.

And yes it is Nathaniel's birthday soon. I can't believe that he's going to be a whole year old! Time has just flown by since he was born and its amazing thinking that not so long ago he was this tiny little thing (only 5 pounds 15 ounces at birth) and now he's this strapping little boy getting into everything and saying all these new words. We're throwing quite a big party actually the weekend before his birthday and I'm really looking forward to it.

Yeah, maybe it has changed. My only experience of being there was in February/March 2006 and like I said earlier I thought it was excellent.

Yeah i only work 3 days...ish!!! I have to be in paddington by 8am, so i am up with hubby!!! 5:15am wed thurs and fri! I think i may go north shore public only because my family can visit easier...and i know one of the midwifes there already so it wont be as daunting! but i am still going to shop around!

Good luck for nathaniels b'day. It sounds like a great weekend!!!! is he walking yet?

Not walking yet but he is cruising the furniture. His balance still isn't fantastic though so I think it'll be a while before he actually walks properly. I'm happy to wait - he'll be even harder to keep a lid on when he starts walking!

Hey ains,

I live in Castle Hill, and am having bub #1 (due in June) at the SAN. So far I've been really impressed with them. I've been to pregnancy classes, and I've started pre-natal aqua classes with the physio department who are fantastic. Through the class, I've met lots of expectant mums, who have all had really good experiences there.

I selected the SAN because my obstetrician is in Castle Hill and he is one of the specialists at the SAN. It's also really close to home (15 mins up Pennant Hills Road).

My first choice was RNS private (I was born there many years ago!) ;) , but discounted it for a couple of reasons:

It's a bit far from Castle Hill (the M2 can be a nightmare in peak hour). A quick labour might see a birth on the freeway!

Also, given how often you have to visit the OB or attend classes (depending on how many you sign up for), the travel can get really tiring. In the early part of your pg, especially if you work in town or Nth Syd, it probably won't phase you. However, towards the end of the pg when yr seeing the OB weekly, you might want something closer to home.

Hospitals in the area are: Hornsby, Ryde, Blacktown, and Westmead (public), SAN, Hills Private and Westmead Private (private).

Good luck!

I went to Westmead Public (was recommended) and will never go back there... While my antenatal care was absolutely fantastic, my problem was all in Maternity... Though in saying that, those from my antenatal class didn't have any problems...

I personally will be looking at Richmond or possibly Blacktown for #2.

I wouldn't mind trying the Hills Private but I don't have that much $$ floating around...

Blacktown is raved about and I was going to go there (DF and I were both born there) but I couldn't get passed the rude receptionist on the phone, at 6weeks and emotionally unstable, they need to be friendly! It really does all depend on personal preference, maybe, have a shortlist and see if you can tour the wards for those Hospitals, if you have at Westmead Public next year (if you happen to be due by then) they will have a new Maternity ward with double beds and single rooms, the downside to their upgrade is that they will have less rooms...

I need to study the local Hospitals to see where I'm comfortable with to try for VBAC...

I totally recommend Hornsby Hospital!!! I had my little man there and it was great! They are awesome and are really pumped for natural birth, although if you want an epidural, its there in a flash too...

Also I'm pretty sure that they opened their new Maternity ward there, so I guess it can only be better...

Mather Private at South Bank is offering Parenting and Pregnancy Workshopat the cost of $220. I find it a bit pricy. Is it worth it?
