Is anyone elso obsessed with all this great bendy silicone stuff you can get now?

Today I bought silicone ice cube trays and a loaf pan.

Last week I got a silicone oven mit and a silicone baking sheet.

That stuff adds to my rectangle pan, round pan, and teddy bear muffin tray.

I love silicone stuff :D

I'm not touching the stuff.

I keep an organic kitchen, I'm not baking in silicon.

We have one of the ones from tupperware....

Just a big circle one but when we bake cakes in it they dont rise....

At all...

Is it maybe a stuff up or is this normal...

The level of cake mix we put in is exactly how big the cake is when it is cooked...

I saw someone post about that on another forum. They thought it was their new oven, but it was the silicon cake pan. They made 5 cakes usinf a tried and tested recipe trying to work out what was happening, and finally put the mixture into a tried and tested cake tin, and hey presto..... cake rises.

Well that's what I was thinking....I don't like the idea of silcone and chemicals seeping into my cooking...I just use tin and glad bake. Is that what you do? I don't see the greatness about them....can anyone explain to me why they are so great??? Or why you even use them???

Geez wow :o

Ok well I use them because they are so easy to wipe clean, and you can fold them up really small (cake tins and pans take up heaps of room in my cupboards), they are so easy to get muffins, cupcakes, ice out of them as you just bend them and they pop out, and very little sticks to them. Even chessy potato bake just wipes off

So that's why I use them and why I think they are so good.

And my cakes rise fine... not a problem.

To be honest I hadn't thought of silicone 'seepng' into my cooking. But if you bake in metal, do you not worry about metal ending up in your cooking as well?
Do you store food in plastic containers? Do you worry about that?
I haven't done my research but I guess I assumed if it is ok to be put in peoples bodies, it's ok to bake in?

I have some of the flexibake stuff from Chef's Toolbox, apparently they are totally safe and silicone free - I trust them because one of the mums in my mums group swears by it and she is a chemical free and organic freak!!

I absolutely loved my huge round one from Tupperware (I got it free for having a party :smiliedance:) until my stoopid DH tried cutting a quiche while it was still in there:(

Now there's 2 cut lines in it!

I haven't done research yet either which is why I'm hesitant to use them...Yes I store food in Tupperware which I know is safe.....I bake in metal that is lined with baking paper at present....just wondering whether they are worth the money that's all:confused:

TwoBoysOnly - if you go to Big W, you can get silicone ice/chocolate moulds for about $7, you can try them to get the feel for it, iykwim? When silicone first came out it was really expensive, and Tupperware silicone still is, but at Big W you can get Wiltshire ones for only a few dollars more than the metal equivalent

Anglemist - my DH cut pizza on my Tupperware silicone baking sheet :banghead: Lifetime guarantee on that gone now

I do believe the Tupperware ones are better than the other brands and Tupperware swears by them being "safer" and not having chemicals come out of them - they are a lot lot more dearer though.

Actually everything Tupperware is soooo dear.....

I'm thinking of taking out a separate insurance policy for all my tupperware. :D

I have a Tupperware baking sheet too. I would only buy Tupperware baking ware - I've heard some of the cheaper ones seep colour into food? eek!
