 How are you?

I'm still being 'broken in' to the MCN world. Current stash size: 9.

I don't have any 'boosters' for any of my MCNs yet and I've got some questions I hope that the more experienced clothies can help me?

From reading some of the sticky's and some of the threads, I've read some people buying microfibre from Coles etc to use as boosters. How/What? Can someone please explain?

What's the difference between just putting a booster in for night time, and putting two inserts in? I haven't tried this yet, but does it make the nappy too bulky?

I'm so 'booster' confused

ok, so you have inserts but not boosters?

I tried the microfibre from coles:thumbsdown: didnt work for us.
I swear by cherubskiss hemp deluxe boosters. 3 layers of hemp+microfleece on top. and very well priced. we use one peapods insert and a cherubskiss booster that lasts overnight:yes:

with 2 inserts, it made the nappy leak as it was too bulky. experimenting is the best way to go IMO cos different things work for different ppl:thumbsup:

This is from the Ozcloth Nappies site:

A booster is an extra absorbent pad laid into a nappy. It can be folding or non-folding, made of cotton, hemp, even sometimes microfibre. (Do not use microfibre directly against the baby's skin; a liner layer of fleece or cotton is needed). Boosters are also called doublers.

Microfibre is a synthetic fabric often found in cleaning cloths. It is made of a combination of polyester and polyamide, produced in such a way that it absorbs moisture readily. Microfibre is not the same as microfleece! Microfleece is 100% polyester and is very similar to polar fleece. Microfleece is not absorbent - it is used as a wicking layer (a nappy liner or the inner of a pocket nappy), or, if doubled or in combination with another water resistant layer, it can be used for nappy covers.
Microfibre cleaning cloths can be found in the cleaning or car care areas of shops. You need the shaggy terry-weave cloths; the flat or waffle-weave ones do not work. Brands that members have found useful are "Living Essentials" from Big W, Black and Gold, IGA, and House & Home (found in a 3 pack, one white, one green, one yellow (32 x 32cm)).
They is used as a booster inside other nappies (not next to baby's skin - many people find the texture highly unpleasant). While absorbent, microfibre can be prone to compression wicking - it soaks up moisture rapidly, but like a sponge, when you squeeze the booster the liquid runs back out. Some people use microfibre as the "core" of a pocket nappy, with hemp or cotton next to the outer water resistant layer to reduce this issue. Some use microfibre as a hidden layer in fitted or all-in-one nappies, or even as a hidden central strip in prefolds.

I have Baby Beehinds foldups (bamboo and hemp ones) that are fantastic.
It's all about layers - the more layers you have the more absorbant it's going to be (so long as you can get it on!!).

Microfibre (like the cleaning cloths) are absorbent. I personally don't like the feeling of the material so don't use them.
We like bamboo boosters and also hemp and organic cotton. These are all more absorbent then you average cotton.
