I think it really depends on whether you want to know your risk for down's syndrome and other neural tube issues, and what you would do with the information.

Everyone is different with whether they want to know, feel it's necessary, would have an amnio or cvs, and if they would terminate. It's really a decision you need to make together, and it's a very personal one, where no one else can say what you choose is right or wrong.

We debated about having the 12 week scan, because we knew that if it came back high risk, we wouldn't have an amnio and we wouldn't terminate either (we felt after ttc 2 years, we were blessed with the baby we had, but everyone's different), so we kind of thought "what's the point?", but we decided that if this did happen, the point would be that we could prepare as much as we could for the possiblity of having a child with special needs. Everyone is different, like i said. There are probably lots of people who don't agree with what we've done, but you need to do what suits you and yours.

What does everyone else think? have i :ecomcity: enough?

Hope this helps a little nikki, i know i haven't given you any answers, more things to think about. Probably just confusing the matter even more for you, sorry if i did.

we were the same as you mel, we wanted the information so that we would be prepared by the time the baby arrived if we knew it would have special needs. in saying that, i probably would have had an amnio to be positive but didn't think we needed that after our chances were 1:23000! :)

nikki, its just up to you, whether you want that information or not. but think carefully about it, because once you are past 13 weeks they can't do the test. we thought it was a great opportunity (as well as finding out about DS) to see the baby again before we told all our friends. i don't think i could have waited until 19 weeks to see him/her!! :D

hope this helps

We decided not to because it wasn't going to change our minds either way but I do agree with the other girls - it would be helpful to know if something was wrong. That way, those who choose to keep their baby, can do their research and prepare for when bub arrives.

The choice is yours and your doctor should have explained the options to you rather than say it's not necessary. For some it's highly necessary, for others it's not.
