Girls do you think if Gwyneth was a member and said: I'm gonna call my child 'Apple'..........what do ya think?
Would we have had the power to stop her?

In short: Does it matter if we approve of each others wild/crazy/ original/ unoriginal etc names of our babes??
O's mom.

I dont think it matters if we approve/like the name people choose for their child.

But Im sure we've all had a good chuckle or raised our eyebrows at some poor childs name!

For instance Im sure some people out there are thinking "Orlando? what where they thinking  " hehehehe :p who really cares LOL at least I know your hubby KB has the same good taste as me :D

If someone is going to call there kid Apple, I don't think anything we could say would change that!
There aren't too many crazy names of babes on this site are there??
It doesn't really matter to me what other people name there child, but to be honest if it is a name like Apple I'll have a laugh to myself about it!! ;)

It would depend on if she was undecided, or if she had decided and was seeing what kind of reaction she would get.

I think that we can offer insight into how people would percieve the name or the person holding the name, but it comes down to the parents in the end.

I know that from the other advice on this site I have found out sooo much more than I could in books and have taken alot of it on board and have implimented some of it already, so I do think that bubhub has the power to inspire people, just not too sure when it comes to names tho.....

Funny O's mom. :p
I wasnt sold on the name as you know: But it is his for the duration he's on this planet...I do however LOVE his middle name...It would have been the first but I shortened it one day in front of DH and he was turned off by others saying the same.
No...it's NOT Apple!!

That's alright if i had of had a boy instead of a girl my DP wanted to call him Donte'e because i didn't let him name our #1 it.
But i don't really think it matters what other people think of these names if the parent are seat on it there's not much we can do but say it's your chose.
My sis in law was going to name her unborn baby Hopper jack & i told her that it sounds like a cartoon character & that the poor kid will get picked on at school but if she likes it then what can i say thank god she changed her mind...

Sometimes I think we are far better NOT to canvas other people's opinions when it comes to baby names. There'll always be some who like it and some who don't, and being as paranoid as we have all proven ourselves to be  it just makes it SO much harder! Because we want to find THE perfect name that everyone will love.. and sadly it just doesn't exist. :(

So when I pick, I'm keeping it to myself.. ;)

oh by the way.. what do you all think of.... just kidding! :)

Some names are strange to others, but I always say " the name becomes the person", so to those who know someone with a "strange" name, it is nothing out of the ordinary.
Once you get to know the little bub, the name grows on you..................................

I am sure people would think queitly to themselves that's a lil odd, or hopefully give a tactful honest opinion.

I told my family that we were naming our baby girl Eliza, and I got slammed by them saying how unoriginal, when did I become so old fashioned, doesn't really go etc.

I have to say it is quite hurtful, but I just turned around and.... didn't say a thing, because this is our baby our names!! Tuff boobies if the don't like it!

But yes next time I think I will not tell my family lol.

I think as long as it's not to way out kids will be fine, but I do think people need to take into consideration everything when picking names, what could the name rhyme with etc

I would crack up if someone decided to call their child Frogmellow .... LOL

I actually think Apple is a cute name, however her next daughter being rumoured to be named Peaches???

MariaO
24-11-2005, 09:52
Isn't Peaches one of Bob Geldof's daughters names. I quite like Apple as well. Not sure about other fruit, there are plenty of flower and nut names though.

A friend of mine made a point of not telling anyone her baba's name till after she was born - did not want to be dealing with anyone's opinion on it.

Talking about weird names, I think the way Jamie Oliver named his girls started all the weird names that Hollywood stars are naming their kids

Daisy Boo and Poppy Honey I think the names were. Poor kids :o

And then it was:

Apple Paltrow - well...

Coco Cox - makes me think of Coco Pops! :D

What will Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise name their kid? Teddy Cool?

my lips are sealed!! When i post about names it is more for reassurance that it isn't a really cruel name. When i said in front of my friends very opinionated hubby that i like Matilda the response i got was horrific it was (chuckle)" i can believe you would be so cruel as to even consider calling your child such a disgusting name" i was near in tears...yes i like the name and it was also my grandma's middle name and she is no longer with us. I didn't think it was disgusting at all. I think if we have a nice comment we should voice our opinion or if we can tactfully suggest that maybe it isn't our fav. name but in the end it is mum and dad's choice. I just like the advice i get from here to let me know i'm not cruel!

I kept getting asked if my child would have a NORMAL name when i was pregnant on Alana. So I said yeah we're thinking of Fionnula!!!!! LOL Then when i named her I told them all that i was spelling it "Ehlana" and they balked!!!!!

This time round my friends have asked again and being that his name will most likely be Declan their response "how's THAT spelt?"

I'm a firm believer in NOT telling ppl your names before bubs arrives. Initially this was because I didn't want anyone "stealing" my name :D . Later on I realised that it doesn't do you any favours. If ppl don't like it, they'll try to change your mind - and they sometimes a rude and cruel about it :( . They won't do that once your baby is born (I guess they think its too late by then?).

And Shanz, I love Matilda, its very Oz, it remembers your grandma and it shortens well - what more could you want? Don't let that bizarre bloke upset you.

Cheers

hey shanz, dont listen to him!!! Matilda is the most beautiful name ever!!! (my daughter is Matilda) and we have only ever had one negative comment about it, most people gasp with delight when we tell them her name and they keep repeating it whilst stroking her and telling her how much it suits her!! so i say go for it!!! :)

Funkychicken

I agree on Matilda being a beautiful name. I would have loved a Matilda but DH couldn't get his head around it. I love Matilda Mae as first and second. This was a dear friends great-grandmothers' name. We have kept our names to ourselves this time around as too many early comments were negative and caused us to rethink based on other peoples opinions. When I told my mum I wasn't telling for this reason she wanted to know who would say YUK. I told her she already had-much to her surprise. She then wanted me to tell her what we have settled on and she promised not to offer her opinion. Too late!! She blew it first time around but got all miffed and acted hurt when I wouldn't tell her this time.
Maybe people could remember the saying our parents insisted we abide by-If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all!

I am all for keeping bubba names to yourself until the time comes to "reveal" them.

I think there will always be someone that doesn't like it and when they are so hard to choose, you don't need to start doubting yourself.

I am one that would be swayed by what someone else thought.
