Hi there seeing as my ds has now climbed out of his portacot i think its time for a bed. I have been thinking of this for a while. His cot converts to a toddler bed but i am worried that its not wide enough and he will just fall out. He is always banging and clanging into the sides. Any advice?

my dd's have gone straight to a single bed. you can buy the side rails so they dont fall out. weve always used the little fold out couches (childrens ones) as well beside the bed, so if they happened to fall, at least they have some cushioning.

I have a side rail on Charlee's, (just one of the mesh ones, i paid about $50 for mine, but i'm sure you can get cheaper ones), as she was a roller and bumper too :D . If you want one for when he gets a big bed eventually, then you could get one now and put it on the toddler bed (if it's long enough?).

For Mackenzie (now she's back in her bed after 18 months), i finally took the rail off and put Charlee's old cot mattress on the floor beside her for a few nights.

Aliyah used to bang into her cot sides as well! Her cot converted into a toddler bed and we changed it over when she was about 18 months. She's now 2 1/2 yrs old and still sleeps in it! She did fall out of the bed maybe twice after taking the sides off, so we put a little foam matress on the floor on one side and had the bed up against the wall and there were no problems. She is also on the higher range of average for her weight and height, and the smaller bed hasn't been an issue. We will probably put her in a bigger bed by the time she's 3 though.
I think converting the cot to bed made the transition much easier for her as it was still the same just without sides.

I'm a big fan of going straight to single beds. I can't see the point in forking out a ton of money for a toddler bed, only to have to fork out a ton more money a couple of years later for a single bed.

We recently move our dd to a single bed and using a mesh rail I bought off another bub hubber and it's working great.

I am under the impression that the toddler beds aren't any bigger than the cot.
Is this right?

I'm looking at moving DD straight into a single bed... no real point wasting money on a toddler bed that'll last only a year or so...and then having to buy a single bed after that. It also means I'll be able to justify the costs of the single bed if she's going to be using it for longer. Same with the manchester.

I was going to say on your last post that it probably would be better and safer to pop him in his own bed!!
My dd had her own bed since 16mnths. A big bed. Ds we have already got his waiting for us to move at the moment he sleeps with us or in our bed on his own.
Toddler beds are cute but I would rather buy a bed that will last until they are a bit older.

DD fell out of hers a couple of times but we just picked her up and popped her back with a cuddle and explained what had happened. She learnt very quickly and we didn't need the side rail.

DS went straight into a big bed, he climbed out of the cot at 18ish mths too.
He was still rolling around heaps in his sleep and crashing into the sides of the cot, but he never fell out of his bed...well, he did last week but he's almost 4 now.

DD will probably stay in the cot til she climbs out, then I'll probably take the side off it so she can get in and out herself til we move somewhere else coz her room is kinda small and I really don't feel like dragging her bed up the stairs anyway.

We have a queen size bed for Hayley (still need to set it up and get a matress) I guess it just depends on your situation, if you'd rather get a bigger bed then do that but if not at least the cot turns into a toddler bed so you don't have to buy one (well for a few years anyway).
