After weeks of breast refusal, my 11wk DD was diagnosed with reflux and put on losec 5mg x 2 day (= 10mg in total per day). We are now on day 4 and have nott seen an improvement in the total breast refusal etc. Does it take up to a week or longer for this drug to kick in????? 2 weeks of no breastfeeding is starting to take its toll!!!!!:crying: :crying:
Hi!
I'm so sorry you're going through this hard time.
From what I understand (a very good friend of mine was in the same predicament as you, only her DD had other disabilities, too) Losec is supposed to work pretty much straight away. There may be other reasons why your DD is refusing the breast. Perhaps (and I'm sorry if this is tmi) your nipples aren't letting a lot of milk out at a time and she is finding it tiring to keep sucking for not much reward?? There could be other reasons also.
If I were you I would ring a Lactation Consultant straight away as you don't want your milk supply to go down. They would be the best person to help with the refusal if it isn't to do with the Losec, of course.
Good luck to you & your little bubs.

I agree with Nan here. It's very unlikely to be the Losec, after 4 days your bub should have felt the benefit of it. As Nan said chat with the Lactation consultant and also speak with your GP/person who put bub on the Losec.
Hope you get it sorted soon, it must be a very hard time for you and bubs. :hugs:

Dear All
Thanks for your comments. After 4 days on Losec it hsould have kicked in I know and have just rung the pead and he said up to a week??? Does anyonehave such lengthly experiences of effectiveness? I saw a lactation consultant yesterday and she said all looked fine with attachement, supply etc. Have been pumping in between "feeds - ha ha with refusal" to keep supply going.
Perhaps the Losec does not work all the time?????

It's possible though unusual for a bub not to react to it (it's usually only adults that can be intolerant to certain drugs.) So i'd do as pead suggested and if no change after the week then push for something else to be done. Sorry it's going to drag out a little longer for you.
Hi Sloaneranger
My dd also had reflux and was prescribed zantac which did not work for her (was supposed to take only a wk but we waited 2 & still no improvement). We got a 2nd opinion & were told to give her mylanta instead which worked stright away. perhaps ask your pead about mylanta??
