I have been starting ds with toilet training on & off now for about 3 or more months. Now I know I should be consistant & just keep going until he gets it. But he's just not getting it.
On Monday I started, & I was mentally ready to just keep at it..
Day 1 was great!! He did 2 wees on the potty for me & got rewarded with a choice of a Thomas sticker, which he was thrilled about.
Day 2 was not so successful, but he would at least sit on the potty for me...
Day 3 was even less successful, with him throwing a few tanties when I asked him to come to the potty.
Day 4 today.... was rediculous. He was at kindy today & just wet himself all day. Then at home he wouldn't let me put him on the potty without chucking the biggest tanties which of course made me sooooo cranky.
Now I dont know what to do..... do I give up? And try again in a few weeks?
Do I start rewarding him for sitting on the potty, even if he doesn't do anything?
I dont want to give up, as I know consistancy & persistance is the key. But its becoming a negative experience for both of us :( .... What do I do?

Stay positive. You're doing a great job. Just keep doing what you're doing. Persevere!

Maybe try getting him one of those toilet training steps for the loo....the red and blue ones with the yellow toilet seat on top?
No ideas really, sorry.

i'm not at this stage yet, but i read somewhere that getting them to teach a dolly (one that wets is even better) or a teddy to go potty and making a big fuss about success can work they say it makes them feel a bit more confidant if they can teach ted to go etc... sorry i wasn't much help, hang in there mate

JMO - and you know what this is worth from someone with an intrained 3.5 yo  - but I don't think it's worthwhile putting pressure on an unwilling child. He's just putting all his effort into resisting you - none into trying to learn what you're teaching.
One mistake I made with Rachel, I think, was doing too many attempts too quickly. We had our last serious go in November and I'm not planning on trying again now till March. One thing I've realised over the past year or so is that she's definitely been making progress (Very. Very. SLOOOOOOWLY!) and just as much of that progress has been when we're "not trying" as when we're trying. So why keep banging your head against a brick wall?
We really need a "late potty trainers support thread". We'd give each other lots of :hugs: and turn away anyone with a trained 2-year-old at the door (anyone with a trained UNDER 2-year-old would get chased down the street with pitchforks  )
Chin up! You know it will happen sooner or later. One day this will just be a bunch of good stories to embarrass your son at his 21st with!
For DD we moved the potty into the lounge room...seems gross I know but our bathroom is a fair hike (from lounge and playroom) for little legs when wee time comes. So we made it central.
Worked a treat!! :smiliedance: Also DD wore no undies to start with, just bear bum!!
She is also VERY independant. :banghead: Once she knew about SITTING on the potty, I left the potty open and left the room when she showed signs of needing to wee (peaking around the corner to check on her) She used it straight away!!
I hope this helps a little:fingerscrossed:
