I've been taking iron tablets through out my pg but have just been told my haemoglobin count is only 94. Is this really low?

Before falling pg i use to take liquid iron but my dr insited i take tablets while pg. I have decided to change back to liquid because it absorbs better.

Does anyone have any reccomendations as to what brand is best to take while pg?

You may want to try Ferrograd C, which you can only get from the chemist. It has a bit of vitamin c in it which helps the iron absorb properly.

I've only ever taken Floradix when pregnant as it's very gentle and doesn't cause the runs or constipation. I had iron tabs once and it was a disaster for me! The only reason our iron gets lower in pregnancy is because our blood volume constantly increases so per litre we end up with fewer red cells. Mother Nature has designed it this way and unless it gets low to the point where it's affecting you, you're perfectly safe. There is some controversy about whether iron supplements are even necessary unless you're actually ill from the low iron. You can up the iron-rich foods you eat too since we tend to absorb nutrients from food better than from supplements anyway. Nettle tea, raspberry leaf tea, green leafy vegies, red meat of course, and, you'll like this one - dark chocolate - are all good sources. Basically when you have 50% more blood volume in your body, you can't expect to have the same iron count as before you were pregnant, KWIM?

94 seems low .....but I dont' really know ..... I lost alot of blood having Archie and I know mine got down to 91 and they suggested I have a blood transfusion .... but I was a bit iffy about it so I decided to build it up on my own (ate lots of liver .... ) I also took that Ferrogard C and they told me to take Vit.C with all iron tablets or supplements !!!

Anyway I'm sure everyones levels are all different !!!

Good luck

During pregnancy a women's haemoglobin level is lower than when you are not. As you are carrying the fluid called Plasma that the blood cells float in increases by about 50% during the pregnancy. Usually at its peak by 32weeks. The increased levels of Plasma dilutes the red blood cells, making their level drop. This is complety normal.

Pregnant Level is: 105-150 g/L

Non-Pregnant level is: 115-160g/L

Supplements and diet are the better ways to help whilst pregnant.

Hope this helps... :D

P.s I have always been anaemic and i took tablets twice a day and my results droped alot lower than 91 and i didn't have a blood transfusion. So don't worry to much. It's Fixable
