View Full Version : C/section and Strep B?
Hey all
Ive just had my c/section booked for the 6th of april and I was wondering - do you still have to have the Strep B swab test if its a planned c/section??
forgot to ask my OB - thought that some one here might know...??
Thanks
Nope, it's not required. :)

You don't have to have it anyway, full stop. There is a very very small risk of the baby still being colonised with GBS if it gets into your amniotic fluid.
You should always watch your baby in the first hours/days for signs of respiratory distress and lethargy anyway, regardless of mode of birth and previous test results. GBS is a transient bacteria. If it's there at 37 weeks with a swab, doesn't mean it will be there at the time of birth.

i wouldnt think so, only reason i say this is because strep b is a bacteria in the vagina and well obviuosly c section isnt through the vagina so the baby would be at risk..... so i wouldnt think it would be necessary... i could be wrong

This is probably such a dumb question to ask but here goes anyway...

You dont always have it. You do have to be tested each pregnancy. My friend was Neg with 1st child and Pos with 2nd.
I had to have the test even though I had an elective c-section booked.
Dunno Why? But I did.
Angela.
