Children's shoe sizes

Hi all,

My first baby is due in May, but I'm wondering how the sizing for kids shoes works.

What size shoe would the average 12 month old wear?

It differs. I wouldn't be putting them in any shoes unless they are walking confidently. And then i would limit shoe wearing. More natural for kiddies to go barefoot, and for sensory development.

I think you'll have to wait and see, my DD has been going through sizes like crazy lately. There's no way of telling how big your baby's foot will be at 12 months, they're all different.

I agree - wait and see. It's so tempting to buy cute shoes, but you really just have to WAIT.

DD was born with massively chubby feet - it's very difficult to find shoes that fit properly, AND are good quality/leather.

I didn't stuff around with shoes until she was walking either - before then, they don't need them, and it CAN damage the foot. It's just not worth it really - socks look cute on babies that don't need shoes.

Yep, it really does depend. Matthew was a size 6 at 12mths, whereas Brooke was only a size 2.

You're better off taking them to get fitted when they need their shoes.

Yep you need to wait till they are walking and have their feet measured properly. I do feel you need to get good shoes for their first year or so (it can be expensive) but I think it is worth it.

Also you can then get the 1/2 sizes, ie: Connor is in 4.5 size shoes because he has a wide foot, and will get extra support in the heal.

The shoe specialist mentioned that they should not be put in shoes until they have been walking properly for at least 4-6 weeks. And that they should walk in bare feet as much as they can.

When DS1 started walking before 12mths, he was a sz 7 and know hes 2 and a sz 9 or 10.
Also depends on the brand. I think you should just wait.

my ds1 was a sz4 in pre walkers he only went up to sz5 about 4 months ago he has been walking since 10 months though
