View Full Version : floppy larynx
Has anyone had this with their baby? My DD makes this funny high pitched sound every now and then when she's breathing. It does sound like a blocked airway.
MCH nurse said it sounds like a floppy larynx. She's doing it less so I'm not too worried. Should I be?
Thanks

Yeah my ds does this. He will be playing then he will stand up and get excited then breath in and it's a high pitched squeal type, I can't explain the noise. I thought it was something like a blockage as well. Glad to know he's not the only one.
My DD had this too!! It was kinda scary at first, but I gathered because no one cared it was kinda normal. DD only did it when she fed so that was okay.
My CHN was like "Oh yeah thats just a floppy larynx" prior to that I was stressin:eek:
APPARENTLY they (DD did) just grow out of it....
Hope that helps....
My DS1 has this condition. When he was 3 weeks old he was admitted to hospital for something else and I had noticed he made these funny little choking noises occassionally. Finally a nurse was there when he did it and she called the Dr straight away. He was diagnosed with a Floppy Larynx and I was told it would get a lot worse before it got better. Boy were they right! By the time he was 4 months old he sounded like he was having a severe asthma attack all the time (worse after a feed). People would just stare at him as if he was a freak, it was horrible.
When he was 15 months old the paediatrician referred him to a specialist in respiratary problems because he had never quite heard one as loud as my sons.
They put DS1 under general anaesetic (sp?) and had a good look down his throat and it was classified as a severe floppy larynx but they decided not to operate as he was getting enough oxygen and he was putting on weight. They have assured me that it should improve by itself.
He is almost 3 and I would say it has improved greatly as there are times when he is quiet, but at night and at play he is still very loud. My worry is him going to school and being teased but with a bit of luck it may be completely better by then.
If you want some more information please pm me, there is so much more I can tell you.
I hope I haven't scared you as my sons is a severe case, with a bit of luck your Daughters will be ok.

Isaac had that when he was little-only found out when we took him to the hospital at 3weeks of age as we thought he had croup! It sounds awful when they do it, but it does stop eventually. Isaac's now 21mths, and he's fine.
Goodluck:)

miki has a flopy larynx along with other compliations, her unfortuinately was nit just mild and nothing to wory about alot of the time they sound worse than they are but milis caused alot of blue episodes apnea and played a part in her not eating (she was a tube feeder ) so she had heres surgiclay fixed at 8 months old if we had seen the ENT sooner it would have been fixed earlier but as she has servere gerd all of her bluse eps and apnea was put down tom that rather then the flopy laryncs when we finaly saw a ENT dr he had her in the OR two days later,
she stil has a flopy laryncs but no where near as bad they tend not to do to much to the throat when they fix it as most kids wil be able to grow out of tghe rest of it but we foundout the other day mikis may still be causeing problems so may require more surgery i really hope not but we will see
I f you are wanting to find more info about a flopy laryncs perhaops to a web search under the title Laryncomalacia as htat is hte medics term for it
Floppy Larynx technical term is spelt Laryngomalacia.:)
sorry my mistake i cant understand the doctors writeing on mikis hospital admision form
Don't worry I have it writen on the fridge so I can always see how it is spelt. :yelclap:
my son is 4 months and has it too. he also goes blue and hardly eats makin himself dehydrated. will prob require op too, its done by laser surgery

Hi
My Dr has diagnosed my son with this also. But I am not confident that this is actually what he has. Ive googled it and read a bit and I just wanted to know what the high pitched noise sounds like.
My sons sounds like a barking cough- which I also get with my asthma thus the reason why I am questioning it. He mainly coughs morning and evening.
Any info you can share to help me would be appreciated.
Thanks
I have a severe case of this myself combined with other ENT problems.... I have had operations on it but I am so greatful that my mum refused one operation. When I was around 3 or 4 they wanted to put a hole through the vocal cords to make more room to breathe (i don't know the medical name for the procedure) but my mum refused because I would have lost the ability to speak normally if at all.... It has gotten better with time but I still breathe loudly and because of the other issues if I breathe through my nose I don't get enough oxygen. There is no other problems though... I played heaps of sport as a kid and it never really affected me.... Kids at school always said stuff but the best thing I think you can do is what my mum did and explain to your child why the breathe heavy/noisy so they understand.
Good luck to all of you....
Dani
Gee Dani thanks for the insight into what it is like to live as an adult with this condition. They kept saying that my DS1 would be over it by the time he was 2 but it is still there. Now they tell me it will be gone before he starts school but I have my doubts.
mikenzee had her second operation for laryngomalacia yesturday this time they made the airway alot ider then usual as she was still having a lot of troubke keeping ehr airways open she is on lots of pain though from the op everytime she refluxes it burns her throat and on a op site its not fun for her
OMG poor little Mikenzee!:hugs: :hugs:
I have her in my thoughts and hopefully everything goes allright. Little kids are tough and as hard as it is on you it will all be for the better. Let us know how she is going please.
omg note to any reflux and laryngomalaia mums if your baby need surgery for it PLEASE make sure there reflux is somewhat under control first kenzees isnt and she has been a night mare recovering from the op she has had max doses of panadol and gastrogel and all har reflux meds and is still in pain admitedly her reflux is realy bad any way but this is crazy
