My 8yr old son will be having a partial circumcision done in the next month or so. After years of a wait and see approach it has been recommended that it be done because his foreskin is very long and very tight (the same length again of a penis) and he is now experiencing a lot of infections and reflux where the urine is being pushed back up into his kidneys because the opening of his foreskin has actually become smaller as he has grown (the hope was it would get larger) and the urine can't escape fast enough.

The compromise is that although he will have a circumcision the surgeon will only remove the excess tight skin so that the head of his penis will still be covered by the foreskin and should look exactly like a non-circumcised penis still, just a shorter foreskin with a normal sized opening so it can be retracted when it's ready to retract.

Has anyone's child had this done? What was the recovery like? What can I do to help him during the recovery?

My son is very keen to get it done because his penis is quite painful a lot of the time now and he is quite dependant on antibiotics.

Have you researched betamethasone cream? It's effective in the vast majority of cases of phimosis. Another option would be dilation under local anesthetic, or a small dorsal slit. Googling "conservative phimosis treatment" may reveal additional options as well.

Hi my DS at 11 months had a minor operation as he had an undescended testicle and had extra foreskin where his penis was hooded so the surgeon recommended we have him circumised so he did both precedures together.
I must say I was just amazed by the way he bouced back. Pretty much the saem day he wanted to get up and crawl and it was as if he never really had surgery. I think i was in more pain thinking about what i just put my son through than anything. But truly as hard as it is to think about it is the best thing for them long term wise.. but like i said recovery was pretty much the next dat, with a few doses of Panadol.

Goodluck with the Op
