On the same line as the "going backwards" thread I thought I'd start one for something that your child does or has started dong that is just AWESOME. It might not seem like much to other people but to you/your family it's great.
Anyone want to share?
My DD "wrote" a B for the first time today, after about two months trying! :smiliedance:
Anyone else??

Oh good on you, it's not all doom and gloom is it. Brilliant news on the "B"
On the weekend my little rabbit started throwing a ball to us whilst sitting...sounds simple but usually he has to have his hands on the floor for balance, now he waits until he is balanced, reaches for the ball and tosses it to us, waiting for us to throw it back.
We are thrilled!

Emily SAYS (not just signs) LOVE YOU!!!!
How cool is that!!!!???!?!?!!
She started yesterday and it just melts my heart! She is nearly 5 and although she has signed I LOVE YOU for quite awhile now, she has never SAID it.
Quite an achievement I think, and not to mention oh so adorable!

Ok....still on the sitting topic for my little Charlie, we went grocery shopping this afternoon and he sat in the trolley and held on for the entire hour we were there, not slipping once - he has never done that.....normally he would tire and flop around. Since he came off his meds 2 weeks ago things seem to have clicked up a gear.
It's a small thing, but so big in our world! Sitting big and tall in the trolley without my help makes grocery shopping that much more manageable, especially having a 9 m/o too.
It's brilliant.

So good to read all the little things the kids are acheiving!!:yelclap:
Jock has started to do the 4 year old thing occassionally and talk about things as though are really happening, using his imagination. At dinner a couple of nights ago, he told me he saw a kangaroo that day. No prompting, just brought it up himself, like "normal" kids do!! I was blown away!
he has even mentioned when he has done a poo in his nappy a couple of times, though only after he has gone to bed, so not sure if that is so he can get up again, lol.
jessgray
31-01-2007, 06:50
 i bet the kangaroo was a great one too:thumbsup:
my ds1 has started to make sure we know his choices (eg drinks) and refuse the one we thought he wanted:laughing:

Amelia was at mum's for the holidays and the neighbours had their daughter home. She is a teacher is studying psychology. Amelia spent time over at their house playing with their dogs and using the pool. The daughter had no idea that Amelia had asperger's until someone told her. even then she kept saying - but she talked to me just fine, and - but she looked me in the eye.
Three cheers to the uni students who spent 6 months role playing with her, helping her to understand herself and teaching her how to socialise.

It may not seem much to other people, but we are very proud. DS has started to put things up to his mouth again. For 11 months he refused to & would get agitated if anyone tried to help him. Now he bites on the edge of his cup. Hopefully finger feeding might come soon :fingerscrossed: .
Well done everyone elses children. It's great when they achieve something new. Oh yeah plus sometimes he can get to sitting from resting on a pillow. Poor DF has never seen this, just our friend & I. :yelclap:

Woo Hoo! Way to go everyone
It's so heartwarming to read of these huge steps, to some people they seem so small but I know how hard we work to make these small things happen so congratulations everyone. Keep em coming!
Now we can flick between our Going Backwards thread when we are feeling down and come to our Going Forwards thread when it's time to sing our little ones praises (or just need reminding of how wonderful the small things are).
We start back at Lifestart on Tuesday and are hoping for a spot in Conductive Education ("learning to learn") some time soon - anyone tried this?
So fingers crossed :fingerscrossed: we might have some small wins and post them here soon :)

Lifestart - is that the ABC thing?? and whats the other? I think different states have different names. We are currently in ECIP (Early childhood intervention program) havent been there for long but the results last yr were big & really fast too. Good luck with it all.
:yelclap: Great news to hear about all those great milestones, well done to everyone.

Lifestart is a private early intervention program altmum. I'm with you, what is the Conductive education thing Elle???
Jock did really well at preschool this week, his teachers were very happy, so that is one less thing to worry about. Another step forward....
MamaRabbit

Hiya - Yes that's right Lifestart is an early intervention program in Sydney - we pay for it. The one through ABC is a similar name but more child care related than anything else. From our experience, I think Sydney has to be the worst place for free services. We are paying for Lifestart and Conductive Ed so we are guaranteed sessions each week, the government service is perhaps once a fortnight and if you miss a session it rarely gets made up.
Conductive Education is about learning to learn and is an educational program to train the body to rehabilitate itself - without knowing what all your little one's needs are it's difficult to know if this suits you. It is designed for people with development delay (mainly due to Neurological reasons) and is most effective with gross motor delay or any type of movement problems. Not many places run them and you usually have to be assessed for suitability. I have a friend in Qld who does it through a special ed school and she thinks it's great. The UK have loads and loads of courses, apparently we are behind as the trainers need to learn the process in Hungary and it is an expensive program. We will be paying for this course but they do provide funding if you are really having trouble paying. if I see even a small improvement I'm happy to scrape the pennies together.
We are getting assessed next week.
P.S) good on you Jock, for a great week at school! :yelclap:

cody (ds1) will be starting speech therapy if his speech doesnt pick up over the next two months, his pead will be referring him.
next week on tuesday he sees his ENT ppl so hopefully we get answers.
atm he has mastered the art of stripping;) so i think he has found his career lol he even dances as he does it:laughing: if you try to stop him he runs off naked lol
i'm in the process of making a little book with pictures for him so he can learn words and use it to tell ppl what he wants and stuff:D
he's figured out how to hold a pencil the right way.:D now i just have to teach him pens are not for drawing on one's naked body lol

We have Royal Institute for the deaf and Blind who do fortnightly home visits if your child has hearing or vision problems, Then there is DADHC, who provide us with free Physio, OT and Speech Therapy then I can access Sydney Children's at Randwick if we need further follow up, it's all free as is the equipment they give us, I wonder if it's because Megan is only 8 months - does it get harder as they get older to access services???
jessgray - that is so funny - I love body art!!!!

This thread has been quiet for awhile so I thought I would post a small achievement. Today at group Charlie sat in his chair the whole hour without support (I sat behind him just in case though). He has a habit of losing balance and falling unexpectedly (or perhaps I should I say expectedly?????).
He played with the shaving cream and in the rice box with both hands, squishing about, usually it is play one handed while he bites on the other hand. He also made alot of decisions by choosing picture cards - not entirely sure it was intentional but the teacher seemed sure it was...... All in all a good session.
We start Conductive Education on Monday - it is quite strict and disciplined but I've heard good things so we'll see how we get on.

Go you good thing, little Charlie:smiliedance: :yelclap: .
Let us know how he gets on with his conductive education Elle...
You'll be pleased to know, I'm sure ;) that Jock has hit his straps at preschool and is now giving them a good run for their money, though they still all love him and tell me he needs another day there each week! They had a tank with tadpoles in it the other day, they got rid of it after the 10th time of pulling out they toys, pencils, puzzle pieces, etc he put in there.
ohhhh, I have one to top all of them! (sorry but mine truely IS better)

Well, Lunar, you got me crying!
As most of you know Maia's not talking yet, but with the grommets done we're hoping for that to eventuate soon:fingerscrossed: . She is making some different sounds now.
1) Maia can definitely hear:smiliedance: . Yesterday I had her in the sling to walk to school (pick Tatum up). As we went out the door a plane went over (live directly under the flight path) and it scared the bejesus out of her! Then as we walked further we went under a tree with a heap of lorrikeets that suddenly started squawking and, again, she grabbed on to me!
2) She is eating soooo much more!
3) She is balancing better, especially when standing un-aided.
4) Saturday night - she slept AAAAALLLLLLL night!!! We haven't had a full nights sleep since she was about 4 mths old.
5) When we call her name she stops immediately and turns her head to us.
All of this has happened since her op on Thursday:)

My daughter like to keep them guessing, none of her specialists can figure her out, we have 6 teams and everytime anyone of them talks to us they start their sentence with "we aren't sure why but.." Metabolic problems are so tricky, not enough is known.
We were told when Megan was 2 months old that her liver was failing and she would need a transplant....... .and they don't do transplants of kids with multiple issues like Megan............... They did the biopsy and told us actually everything was fine, we will review in 2 years. So although her body appears not to work from bloods, ultrasounds etc, it actually does??? Confusing

Hello, I've been going on about Charlie and his sitting lately but it just keeps getting better and better, I am blown away. Took both the kids swimming today, afterward we went to have a sandwich on the grass and my little rabbit sat on the grass, legs outstretched shivering, exhausted, wrapped in a towel enjoying the sunshine - he didn't hold on for balance, he didn't lean forward, sideways or even fall backward like he usually does. He even reached out for the sandwich to pull it toward his mouth and at one point put his arm around his sisters back as if he were protecting her for a change (normally she looks out for him) - he looked like a child who has been sitting since they were 6 months....usually he is concentrating so much on staying upright that he needs to lean forward and can't use his hands. But today he seems to have found his balance (well for around 30 mintues at a time, more if we are playing games and I can distract him).
Woohoo!! We've only had 2 Conductive Ed classes and this has happened. :yelclap:
Onward and upward.

That is brillant!!!!!
Megan lifted her head 8 times yesterday, while on her tummy to look at herself in the mirror, she is lying on the floor babbling (if u can believe it) to herself and playing right now!!!!! Am excited.
New News too, I am going back to work in 3 weeks!!! My husband is going to stay at home and look after her. He is a temporary resident and we need to get permanent residency so I need to go back to my old occupation (Director of long daycare centre) for 12 months so we can apply. I can't sponsor him cause I am a New Zealander and they changed the rules for us 3 weeks before I arrived in the country!!!
Megan chucking need to go..she is in good clothes

We've had almost 6 full nights sleep in 4 weeks:smiliedance:

It has been very quiet on here lately, how are all our little treasure's doing? (Well, we all now how little Maia's going, after Gremily's hillarius posts earlier).
We have been good, Bronte is making much more attempts at words, though still only after prompting, but more babble on her own, so :fingerscrossed: it becomes more.
Jocko managed to get his socks on by himself straight and the right way up this morning. He was impressed and so were the rest of us.
Hope you all are going well, and all the wee ones are still going forwards.

Hello, I just wanted to share my joy at having my little boy back! I'm sure I mentioned his constant shouting awhile back. It seemed like it went on all day every day for a good 2 months or so. It was like a constant whinge, attention seeking, or frustration. The problem for me was that the whinge was the same tone all day - no variation in sound. Nothing I did seemed to help either.
Anyway for around 5 weeks now (touch wood I don't jinx us) he has been the lovely little boy we know and love, he has a great twinkle in his eye, he is more focused and is communicating with different sounds. He occasionlly does the whinge which had once driven me mad, but it is now only when he is really tired, as soon as I get him to bed it stops. The rest of the day is brilliant and we have so much fun.
So I am not sure what was going on before. Perhaps I have learned to communicate with him better? Perhaps he had some sort of activity in his brain causing the frustration, or perhaps he was just being a 2 year old. Whatever it was I am just thrilled that he has managed to get it under control as it has allowed him to focus on playing more effectively, sitting and moving better, and generally communicating with nice sounds.
I hope everyone else is doing well.

:smiliedance: Congrats :smiliedance:
I Bet your so happy, glad everything is going well and yay for having your happy little boy back again.
Hey Mummarabbit!
Glad your little guy is back to his personable self....nothing worse than a cranky little person. Just as a matter of interest, I have noticed that with my kids they go through a really cranky stage just before they make a big jump in the development stakes - like just before they crawl or walk. Maybe the little dude is about to make some progress?
MamaRabbit
29-05-2007, 13:08
Thanks for the encouragement ladies.
That would be great if we have a development phase for a bit, he seems really focused and motivated at the moment so that is a huge plus. At least he is happy again anyway.
