Oh dear!My beautiful DS2 starts Grade 1 tomorrow and I honestly thought I'd be handling it a little better than I am!

I am just as much of a mess (hmm maybe a little worse) as I was last year when DS1 started Grade 1:laughing:

My shadow's going to school! He's so excited! It's hard to say what I'm feeling at the moment! Is anyone else like this??

Here is a list of some of my emotions right now!

*heartache because both my boys are 'gone'

*excitement because he's a 'big boy' now

*sadness LOL same as excitement!

*happiness because he's so proud of himself!

*uneasiness because he's been placed in an 'advanced' class and I'm unsure of how he'll go.

Can some-one please tell me to pull my head in:D or at least tell me this is normal!

Oh I'm so going to cry tomorrow!

 yeah I know:o

I honestly don't know why I'm worrying so much!Although he's been very clingy the last couple of weeks, so that could have something to do with it.

The advanced class is something they are trialling at the moment:eek: Apparently the government wants to bring in 'knowledge-based' classrooms not age-based IYKWIM.

I was all for it last year and now I'm freaking about it!

Good luck today everyone who is starting and/or returning to school. I'm feeling quite excited for my DD, who is going into class 1. She goes across the road to the big school with her big brother now.
I can't believe that this time last year, I was trying to get 2 children and a five week old baby organised! Wow, that year went fast.

Have fun.:)

Man which school are you at for the 'knowledge based learning' cause ours sure isn't doing that we want our DS1 in grade 2 instead of grade 1. He is getting tested within these first few weeks of school to see where he stands. They just don't think that he will cope socially.....hmmmmm I think it's just too hard for them

Well... my first baby started Grade 1 today... :( :p So sad they get big so fast, I keep looking at fuzzy thinking how sad it'll be when both of them are going...

Thankfully she wasn't at all upset  ("yeah whatever, bye Mum") I don't know how some parents would have left their kids they were so upset - almost made me cry. She looked so big (but little) in her uniform...

Angelmist - you're normal (well, I think so - scared???) :D

Hope all the mummies that have babies going off to school don't sob too much...

I hope everyone went well today. GOOD LUCK! My nephew started prep this morning and we were all worried about how he would react when his mum left. But my sister & I hooked him up with a friend and he didn't even care about his mum leaving

:(Oh my he looked so gorgeous (and big yet little) in his uniform, like you said Orca!

He got picked on within minutes of getting there by the older kids:("You're not in Grade 2, why are you here?" and they walked off and wouldn't play with him.He was ready to come home then and there until a friend of his came. Then he was like 'Ok mum,dad you can go now!'

Only an hour to go to pick them up and see how they went!

And yep........I did have tears in my eyes but I wasn't the only one:smiliedance:

My dd is starting grade 1 today and she is pretty excited, yet apprehensive at the same time!

In kinder last year, they only had 4 sides of A4 paper a week for homework and only had to read 2 home readers a week - this year she will have a couple of pages of homework and a home reader every night!

They can't separate the kids into knowledge based classes at her school as they deliberately only have 1 class for each grade in primary. They do, however, divide the class into groups and teach each group at the level they are currently at. My dd is doing pretty well despite being the 2nd youngest in her class with most of them being 12 months or close to older than her. She is in the 2nd group out of 6 and reading/writing/maths is being taught at grade 2 level this year. There are kids in her class that have outstripped the grade 3 kids already!

Roll on the morning ... let this new adventure begin!

Thought I'd share this poem with you. I wrote it the day my last DD started school. That left me Home Alone (except for work). Bit long, but enjoy...

On Starting School

Teacher to Child:

You're in big school now.
Here we have rules
Like at home.
School is a great place to find out new things
and meet new people.
Treasure your years here.
The journey along them
will too quickly
be gone.
And what will be left
will be memories
and knowledge.
This is the legacy of school.

Teacher to Mother:

Whilst your child is in my care
I have a goal
and a duty
To help her with patience
and understanding
through the little
and big
encounters of each day.
To return her to you
safe and happy
and eager
for the coming day.

Child to Mother:

I'm in big school now.
I'm going to know everything soon.
My teacher knows everything already
and one day I'll be like her.
I get scared at school
sometimes.
What if I hurt myself?
Will you be there?

Child to Teacher:

You're going to look after me
aren't you?
This is all new to me.
It's different from a family.
There are so many kids here.
Will you tell me the right thing to do?
Will you help me?
Will you teach me?

Mother to Child:

You're in big school now.
I need to know you're safe
and supervised
and learning.
Find your strengths
and build on them.
Be happy.

Mother to Teacher:

You're borrowing my most treasured gift.
She's in your hands
for a short time each day.
While you hold it
Be careful of its fragility
Be aware that you can break it
or lose it
or mould it
or plant things in it
to grow.
Tend it well.
