i was wondering if anyone can help
i have very irregular periods ever since i have had them (since the age of 9 )
But i feel pregnant on the pill but i have herd that irregular periods can mean you have PCOS.
If any one has PCOS what were your symptoms of this and how were you diagnosed

thanks for your help

I had been on th pill for 7 years but b4 that my AF had alwayse been on time that i can remember but it was never any longer then 2 days long and i never really got alot of cramps.
Hope thats helps a bit and best of luck.

I have PCOS and I also fell pregnant on the pill. My son is now 6.
I didnt even know what PCOS is until they told me thats what I have got after a year of TTC with no luck. Pretty much my only sign was very irregular periods. After I did some research on PCOS I realised I had a couple more little signs but they arent really noticeable unless your looking for it.
My cycles can be anywhere from 35 days to 56 days long. I dont ovulate naturally and I need Clomid to fall pregnant.

hi Hayley
It is a funny old thing PCOS, as the symptoms can vary very widely!
For me the main pointers were:

*Excessive bleeding with AF
*Very very painful cramps
*Irregularity of AF (sometimes would last a month, sometimes a day, the gaps between cycles varied about the same amount)
*Insulin resistance (diagnosed years later)

There are 2 main types of PCOS, the most common is the one where there is an elevated testosterone level, hence the excess hair and body oils causing pimples. The other type (I have) has normal testosterone, but generally insulin resistance. Some symptoms seem to overlap.

I ended up conceiving when not on the drug to make you ovulate (Clomid), it can definitely happen, I guess it's a case of odds (though I was on Metformin to help my body deal with insulin). So yes, getting pregnant on the pill is certainly possible.

The best thing would be to see a doctor, the first thing they would probably do is an ultrasound to see if you have any cysts. They may also take blood to check out your hormone levels.

I hope this helps a bit, and good luck! :)

Hi Hayley

Yes -as PP said, symptoms can vary widely, and also there is a difference between having polycystic ovaries and having polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Anyway - for me, I had incredibly painful and heavy periods ever since I started having periods. They were completely irregular in frequency, and lasted for days and days and days.

A few years ago, I started getting increasing period-like cramps, but at any time - not necessarily during a period. They got worse and worse. I also started noticing that I would get low blood sugar levels occasionally, especially late afternoon.

Finally I went to the GP and got referred to a gynaecologist. The ultrasound revealed polycystic ovaries (>23 cysts on each ovary). Then a laparoscopy was done where they did ovarian drilling (diathermy) and drained the ovaries. That was in 2004 and it has helped HUGELY.

So - definitely the best thing is to see your doctor and get some tests done. Symptoms vary among women but we all know our bodies best and what doesn't feel right.

I have PCOS and I have conceived without ovulation assitance 3 times, 2 full term bubs. Both times I conceived I was at a really healthy weight and exercising. I found out about PCOS after 1st baby so I felt I could conceive naturally and tried to be postive about it.

It was diagnosed because I was having mid-cycle cramping and spotting which seems to occur mostly when I am having a non-ovulation cycle.

I have found that for me - I know it doesn't work for all PCOSers - that being at a good weight helps regulate my cycle and make it more predictable. That being said a regular cycle for me is 35 days.

I recently had a misscarriage. I am convinced it is because my hormones are out of whack because I am overweight. I asked OB when saw her whether I should consider progesterone support in future but she didn't think so as I have had 2 sucessful pregnancies.

Good luck.
Sally

I fell pregnant with DS when on the pill. They found a small (3cm diameter) cyst during an ultrasound.

After DS was born I was reffered to a gyno who did further ultrasounds, blood tests etc. Was diagnosed PCOS.

I had always had the excess hair, oily skin/pimples, bad cramping. I had had pretty regular periods for a few years then they got pretty irregular hence taking the pill to regulate them. Had never even heard of PCOS till I saw the gyno.

If your concerned then its worth getting checked out.
Cheers
