You can definately get pregnant from this!

Pregnancy tests can be used from about a week after a missed AF... so it could be a waiting game.

You can get the morning after pill over the counter of any pharmacy, your girlfriend/partner just eeds to speak with the pharmasist- it has already been 48 hrs and i think the morning after pill can only be used within a certain time frame- talk to the pharmasist tomorrow if this is the course of action you wish to pursue.

Please if you are not ready for a baby, either always use a condom or discuss your partner going on the pill, it will save some of this stress.

Best of luck.

Buddies can still make babies... and if you are only friends and have other partners, it might be safer health wise to use protection.

The chances are average i suppose- it depends on when she ovulates, the sperm! It is really a waiting game i'm sorry to say!

Best of luck with it all.

If it has been more than 48hrs I'd talk to her about going to see a family planning clinic or at least speaking to a GP to find out the options. If you're both unemployed you should be able to get the consultation bulk billed. The chances are there whether you have unprotected sex or not. The only true way not to fall pregnant is to abstain. I fell pregnant whilst on the contraceptive pill. I do believe that at the time I had other medications interfering with the pill though. Better to be safe than sorry. You can buy pregnancy tests that are accurate up to 3-4 days before a period.

The best bet is to see a doctor. I hope things work out the way you want them to.

hey.

if your girlfriend has a regular 28 day cycle then you have just about picked the best time for her to get pregnant. a girl is most fertile for about 3 days at around 11-14 days AFTER her period. This leaves another week or so to go before her next period is due. So there is a really high chance that she may be pregnant.

you can't really test for pregnancy using the ones you can buy in the chemist until the day she expects her next period to be due.

you can buy the morning after pill over the counter at the chemist. this will bring on her period early, however it can take a day or two after she takes the tablet/s.

next time use protection if you are not willing to deal with the consequences - it is just too stressfull for what was just a small time of pleasure.

Hi there Confused

It's good that your asking these things - but its not so good to take a risk as big as this one. Especially with a 'buddy'.

the best rule of thumb is to always wear a condom (if your sexual partner is not on the pill) - let alone STD's

Having a baby is a full on responsibility - not about gambling on 'if you did it a day or two ago'

Please be more careful - for her sake, for yours, and especially for the babies!

thank you all for your help and so quick!

we both trust eachother very much and are not worried about stds or so fourth however the anxiety of her falling pregant is huge and is what we are worried about at the moment.

do you think that it is best to get the morning after pill? it has only been about 45 hours since it.

Please go talk to the pharmasist or a doctor!

I know there can be complecations if the morning after pill is taken after a baby has been concieved!

Phone the family planning association in your area- it is a confidential call so you don't need to worry about anyone finding out!

I am glad that you are being man enough to help your friend through this. It is not an easy thing to go through!

The absolute maximum time the morning after pill can be taken (from what my GP has told me as I took it on a previous account about 3 years ago) is 72 hours. I would be off to the Chemist as soon as they open tomorrow. (or today in some states as I'm not on Daylight savings time). It is good to see that you are seeking help. I commend you for that.

I agree with madvoice. There are negatives to taking the morning after pill which a doctor / family planning will explain. I was in a similar situation when I was 17 and decided that it was best for me to take it - that being said I never had unprotected sex again, until I was with my husband.

Go to Family Planning they are great and deal with these situations all the time. The sooner the better. If she has her own medicare card she can go to a medical centre or doctor that bulk bills and you will not have to pay for the visit. If she doesn't have a medicare card then you will have to pay to see the doctor (about $40-$70). Then you have to pay for the prescription which is about $20-$40.

Just please promise you will use protection in the future. It doesn't matter how much you trust each other, you just never know if you have STDs once you start having unprotected sex - it's a gamble, just like the chances of getting pregnant. Be smart.

It wasn't availabe over the counter when I needed it - you had to see a doctor to get a prescription or go to Family Planning. I am sure the pharmacist will tell you about the major risks of taking it if you were to buy it over the counter and if you are unsure of anything at all just ask - that's what they are there for.

I am not sure how much it would cost, you would vary depending upon which brand they stock (however there may only be one or two available anyway). I would guess about $20-40? It would be the same price if you saw a doctor / family planning.

The only reason I mention a doctor / family planning is that they often give you lots of information and can also talk to you about anything you want in the privacy of an office as opposed to talking to someone in a shop over the counter. They will also give you a good lecture on making sure you have protected sex which makes you feel like your being told off by a teacher or parent, but sometimes you need a good reminder from an expert to wake up and realise the dangers.

Good luck and I hope you've learned your lesson!

Here is some info I found on the Victorian Health Website:

Contraception - the morning after pill
Sometimes emergency contraception is needed to prevent pregnancy after sex - for example, if the pill is missed, a condom breaks or in the case of being sexually assaulted. The morning after pill is a form of emergency contraception that must be started within 72 hours of having unprotected sex.

Emergency contraception prevents unwanted pregnancies
Emergency contraception works by preventing or delaying ovulation in that cycle or by stopping a fertilised egg from implanting in the uterus

There are different types of emergency pills available.

Since July 2002, pre-packed emergency pills have been available in Australia. Called Postinor 2, it is a pack of two single tablets, each containing the hormone progestogen. You take one of these tablets as soon as possible after unprotected sex and another tablet 12 hours later. A doctor can prescribe these pills but as of 1 January 2004, Postinor 2 can be purchased over the counter without a prescription at many pharmacies throughout Australia, costing around $20.

A health practitioner can also make up the right dosage for emergency contraception by using different pills. Sometimes these pills contain progestogen only (you need to take 25 pills each 12 hours to get the right dose) or they can contain oestrogen and progestogen (they can cause nausea and vomiting).

Your next period
After the emergency pill, most women have their next period roughly on time. About 20 per cent will have an early period and 10 per cent a late one. Periods will be delayed if other hormonal contraception has been started straight after using the morning after pill.

You should go back to your doctor or the clinic if your period is more than a week late, the bleeding is lighter than usual or the bleeding is on and off, as you might be pregnant.

No protection from infection
The morning after pill does not provide any protection against HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

Where to get help

Your local pharmacy - many pharmacies throughout Australia can now provide Postinor 2 over the counter without a prescription.

Postinor 2 is available OTC for between $20 and $30 dollars. Although you don't need a prescription anymore, it still needs to be labled with your name and the directions of how to take it. It can be effective in preventing an unwanted pregnancy for up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.

Confused- you must be really woried..
I hope your "buddy" is doing ok and the 2 of you arent stressing too much!

Just let this be a valuable lesson that you should always use protection.......
You never know for sure if you or your buddy have an STD expecially if you have both had other partners before!

You are both so young and sound like you both are not ready for a baby as a commitment. Always carry a condom if you are sexually active, even of your not "partners".

Good luck and I hope It all works out well for you both!

Hi confused!

I just want to give you a swift kick up the backside for not using protection!! Prevention is much better than cure when it comes to unwanted pregnancies, STD's and AIDS.

Hope it goes well. Goodluck!

I think you've got a lot of good advice here, but there's one thing I'd like to add

Don't count on withdrawal as a means of birth control, even if you get the timing right, sperm are released before the big O. And I've heard of women who are techinically virgins becoming pg (no penetration, but those little guys got in there anyway). And it doesn't matter if you've ejaculated recently, sperm will always be released, its not like they ever all "gone".

Be smart - cheers

I also experianced horrible side affects and ended up in hospital cuz of it.
I had Vomiting, Migraine, Dizzyness, Dehydration and Horrible Period Cramps. :(
dont worry though, as long as it is taken wth maxalon or stemetil, most people dont have these side effects, so your 'buddy' should be fine :)

(dont i know you......:) )

Hi confused

I guess you have learned a valuable lesson here, but I am not about to get onmy soapbox, you are not the first and sure wont be the last person to get carried away by the moment, but for your sake and any future partners sake please use protection
You can get the emergency contraception over the counter at it can be taken up to 72 hrs after unprotected sex, however, the earlier taken the more effective it is, ie, it is not as effective at 72 hours as it is at say 24 hours. That aside, I hope that everything is ok for you and your buddy

Hi confused :)

Just wanted to let you know that my 4th child was conceived after my DH "pulled out " he thought he did it in time, but he didn't consider the "pre" sperm. I knew about it, but he didn't listen

I hope you learn from this and remember to always carry a condom in your pocket, just incase the opportunity arises again KWIM ;)

Considering I wasn't supposed be able to have children, my husband and I used the withdrawal method anyway (just a precaution) and oops look what happened. At the age of 29 & 30 we weren't too fazed, we were just planning on starting IVF after the wedding - saved us a heap of money I guess, but just shows you how it only takes one little tadpole to fertilise an egg.

Its very possible to get pg from the withdrawal method. They actually say that if you do it right (pulling out in time) its only 70% effective! They also actually say that sometimes even if the guy pulls out in time, he might not do it quick enough. Apparently it can happen that some guys dont feel the ejaculation until after it starts to come out. Also you can get pg from pre - come. I recommend that if you dont want to conceive a baby that you wear protection.
The morning after pill is only effective within 12 hours after intercourse. So to answer your question its too late to use the morning after pill.
With the pregnancy tests, she can test 5 - 7 days before her next period with some brands. Its recommended though to test the day of or after the period is due. Also not that im trying to scare you but she was probably around ovulation when you had intercourse. Dont worry just yet as the woman only ovulates for 24hrs and thats it, you might of missed it. Just try to relax and see what happens when her periods are due. If you have any other questions just let us know, we are all happy to help.
