Can anyone tell me if having fairly large gap between the top middle teeth is normal to start off? Emma is 8mths old and 8 teeth: 2 at the bottom & 6 up the top. My other kids are older & I can't remember if their teeth started off like this or not? Can anyone help???

I had a gap as a kid until i lost my front teeth, and then they just grew together, my hubby still has his at 33...and DD1 has a gap at the moment...though hopefully it will close when she loses them as well.

I think it's pretty common. Jesse had a gap for a while and Lucas still has his. I just took Jesse to the dentist for his first check up and the dentist said that with the baby teeth, gaps between the teeth are a good sign because if there's crowding with the first set of teeth, there's most likely to be crowding with the second. Just to be sure, I'm going to keep orthodontics as an extra on my private health though!!!

Raleigh's top and bottom teeth have a good 2mm gap between them. I do believe that the gaps will close when the rest of her teeth come through. I wouldn't be too concerned until the adult teeth come through.
Until a childs jaw stops growing, there is no real way of telling how their teeth are going to end up!
When I was twelve, my parents were advised by a school dental nurse that I would need braces as my top canines were growing horizontally out of my gums and there was "no way they would settle into the right place on their own".
I now have an absolutely perfect set of teeth - no cavities either - and I have never had anything done to them ... they just settled into place over the next few years!
Dan has a significant gap between his top teeth, but I'm not going to worry until he is in his mid-teens, then if he is embarrassed, I will start looking to correct the problem.
This is a photo of him at New Years - it shows the gap!

My DS had quite a big gap between his two front teeth when they first came through. The gap has slowly gotten smaller and smaller and now at 4, it's still there, but barely noticeable.
My son at 9mths he had a good gap. Everyone said hes going to be a smart one. But know it they have joined.
I have heard that people with a gap in their front teeth are successful!

My little man has a gap between his teeth but unfortunately ours is a family trait so I don't expect his to close, I just hope that when his adult teeth come through it isn't so big. I hated mine growing up and when I turned 18 it was off to the dentist to fix it. If he still has it when he gets older I will get his fixed if he wants, my Mum wouldn't get mine fixed and I have so many photos as a teenager with closed mouth smiles, I was so embarrassed. Then again, some people aren't fussed so I'll see how he feels.
My brother in law had quite a big one when he was small, his closed a lot as he grew.
And I have to tell you, unfortunately for me it hasn't meant money!

The gap in the teeth is also a family trait for me. Although everyone in my family has had theirs fixed, I've still got mine (Im 21 now).
I used to hate it, but hated dentists even more. I've learned to love my gap and can't imagine myself without it.
My daughter will most likely also have a gap - she has a skin gummy bit at the front which is usually a sure sign of a 'permanent' gap.
I suppose if she wants to get rid of it, she can. I just remember being told I'd need a needle in my mouth to have it cut out - could be old fashioned!
And on a braces issue as all teens hate the idea, if it comes to that I'm more then happy to support my girl and get them on as well... But as with all things children, just have to wait and see!

My DD has the 'skin gummy' bit too, so i'd say she'll probably keep it too. DD2 (4 months) has the same thing, so far (no teeth yet though), so maybe she'll have it too. Hopefully they won't be giant gaps though...
