View Full Version : back pain since pregnancy
Hi everyone
I was just wondering if any other mums ahve experienced ongoing backpain since falling pregnant and having their babies. Im pretty sure I injured my back by stupidly lifting a heavy tv while 6 months pregnant. I t was sore (sciatic like pain) for about a month then got better. After I gave birth (had a homebirth no problems) it increasingly got worse it now goes from being ok to being really bad and not being able to walk bend lift my now 2 yr old. I have tried alot of different things osteopaths, homeopaths, physio's, chiro's etc PLEASE can someone offer any advice I am sick of being in so much pain

I was hunching over when breastfeeding giving me constant searing upper back pains, I didnt realise I was doing it until someone pointed it out. Lots of panadol and constantly correcting my posture, it took about a month for the pain to stop.
Yours may be a physio thing for a while. It takes longer to heal than it does to injur.
I never had any backpain until I was approx 29 weeks pg with my son and since then I have always had a little niggle in the background, which often escalates to a full on pain that has me groaning and moving around very gingerly.
My solution for everything is to "lend" the kids to someone for a few hours (or put a really long dvd on and provide them with snacks), forget about any housework and have a sleep! I guess since I became a Mum, I turned into my mother who always said for every ache, pain or illness ..."put it to bed and you will feel better when you wake up"!!!
I have never been to a doctor for this and I guess I will one day "when I have time"! It is pretty hard going to the doctor with the kids ... mine always checks my blood pressure straight away when I get in after a marathon wait in the waiting room chasing Dan and trying to keep him out of the office/staff room/ empty consulting room (with all "doctor type things" in it) - and he wonders why my blood pressure is temporarily up! As a result, I tend to go to the ed at the hospital when the kids are tucked up in bed and my dh is home! We don't have an after hours clinic here, so this is the best option for me. besides that, I ring the doc for an appointment and get told that there is one available in 2 weeks time ... that will not help a child with an earache or me with one of my persistant bouts of pneumonia!
I hope that the pain subsides ... looking at your posture, lifting techniques etc is a really great suggestion.

I had the same prob with 1st preg too!! Awefully painful!!!!
Where do you live? I can recommend a terrific massage lady who specialises in remidial massage & postural alignment! She is in Brisbane.
It turned out that my hips were badly out of line. It took about 6 months to correct it. Which involved 3 visits to Sue & a whole lot of stretching everyday!!
I was also quite overweight, so I joined a gym & weight watchers & lost 16 kg!!
This pregnancy has been so much better... & I can actually walk this time!!!
Hope you get it sorted out!!

Becky,
You couldnt walk last time?
My legs stopped working at the end of Sept and I have only just started being able to hobble along now... was your back the problem? All the docs are saying that they dont know what is wrong with me and its kinda annoying, two weeks in hospital for them to tell me that!!

!
No not really. I'd hobble a bit until about lunch time, then I wouldn't hardly be able to move for the rest of the day!! OUCH!!
It was like a pinching in my bum and hips. So painful!!
That's awful, Becka. What has your MW suggested? What have the practitioners diagnosed you with? Your post doesn't give much detail :)

Hi,
Recently I just had my fifth child, and in the last week I have had terrible pain in my lower back. I think I have pulled some ligaments in my back because I haven't been very careful since I got home from hospital and have forgotten that my ligaments are not back to what they are normally are. I lifted my three year old and I think I hurt it then.
I am going to see a physio on Monday and I will probably get told off for doing too much lifting. I am going to have to take it easier in the next few weeks until my body gets back to normal. What does not help is an unsettled baby during the day which sees me carrying her to try and settle her.

It depends on where abouts the pain is as to the treatment. If it is mid back pain then changing posture and lifting correctly should help, as well as time. Losing extra pounds always help relieve strain on the back.
If the pain is in the lower back and causeing pain in your hips and bum, then it is probably sciatica. Unfortunalty that is harder to treat :( Weightloss may help some, but usually medical treatment is the only way to help it. You should see your GP and ask what he/she suggests.
I have a fractured coccyx caused from a fast delivery. I had a seperated pubic bone while I was pregnant so the instabilty of my pelvis and the 2 minute delivery of my son caused the fracture. He was actually born with the impression of my coccyx on his face. He had a perfect triangular shaped bruise over his nose and across the top of his lip  his nose was even broken :(
With the fracture I find it very painful to sit for long periods and the muscles and tendons around the bone are being strained because of it too, which causes sciatica. Being a mother of 4, I haven't yet found the time to have proper treatment for it, so if you do go to the doctor, please let me know what he/she suggests ;)
