Hi everyone,

I am looking for some advice on ovulation kits. Can anyone tell me if they used one and how successful were they?

My 1st son took 6 months after many years of being on the pill, almost 4 years ago, when I was 33. I am now 37 and have been actively trying for 4 months. I know that isn't very long, but I was also pregnant last year and it only took 1 month that time! Since a miscarriage in late Sept I haven't used the pill. Before that was last May.

Maybe my body is not ready for a baby again yet, but I am starting to worry about my age. I will be at least 38 by the time another one comes, if at all.

Anyway, what about the kit. I don't want to make having sex a chore  , and I don't want to lose any fun out of it. Last month or 2, my husband thinks having sex every night (and day, if he could) is the way to do it. :D

Also, what is the difference between the $20 kit at Woolworths and the $60 pack at the chemist.

Thanks heaps.

Christine

Hi Christine, The difference between the $20 kits and the $60 kits is that the $60 kits are reusable and the $20 kits are not, also I believe the $60 kits are saliva kits and the $20 kits are urine kits... You do however get 5 kits for $20, which means you can test prior to when you think you may be ovulating... They do work, and I think if you are really trying for a baby and cannot seem to pinpoint ovulation or would just like that little bit extra help then they are definately the way to go... I used the urine ones and went through 3 kits until I finally ovulated, It's like a pregnancy test, It comes up positive if your ovulating and negative if your not... Best of wishes for your future pregnancy/ies... Haana :)

Hi Guys

There's a company listed on our site called Lullaby Conceptions http://www.lullabyconceptions.com/

They specialise in selling pregnancy and ovulation kits at great prices - the store was set up by a mum who had trouble conceiving and was fed up at the amount she ending up spending on ovulation kits and pregnancy tests. Probably worth a look.

Good luck!

We used a Maybe Baby - about $75 from the chemist. It is a lipstick sized microscope. You just wipe some of your morning saliva onto it, wait for it to dry, and if you are ovulating you can see crystals when you view thru the microscope bit. It works because one of the hormones involved dries in a fern-shaped pattern. Sound expensive but it can be used indefinitely so after 4 pregancies (2 babies / 2 miscarriages) we passed it on to friends.

Good luck.

Hi Chubby Bubby. The Maybe Baby can be used forever. We had ours for 4 years, and then it has been thru 2 sets of friends. There are no chemicals etc, it is just a small lipstick sized microscope, so it lasts as long as the batteries do, and then I suppose you can alsways change them - not that we ever had to.

I buy mine online. I pay $14 or something for pack of 30 tests. I have found them to be 100% reliable- had implanon out September 12, using the OPK my LH surge was detected on 30 September, got a BFP on a HPT 9 days later :) safely that ended in m/c, but dates were spot on. I buy them from oracle fertility. You can also get combination packs of OPKs and HPTs, as well as packs of HPTs.

Going to reply to this thread before more spam comes through!

I bought my OPKs online as it it much much cheaper then buying them from the chemist or supermarket. From memory I got a pack of 50 OPKs and 10 HPTs cant remember for how much but it wasnt alot. I got that many as I wasnt sure when I was ovulating and it allowed for much more frequent testing as I wasnt afraid of wasting tests. Basically I tested from day 11 to day 16 so I could see how the peak went from nothing to starting and when I was Oing and when it finished.

I also used Maybe Baby however I found it hard to use and a little misleading with the whole 'ferning' thing but maybe that was just me

And I didnt think knowing when I was Oing made s3x a chore....even tho we DTD regularly it was comforting to know that when we were DTD that it was at the right time.

My Maybebaby is right now sitting in the trash bin. I tried it for months using every conceivable technique and tip I could find but it never helped at all. So, it's great if it works for you, but a bit expensive if it doesn't.

I also used lullaby conceptions' opks and hpts at the suggestion of some hubbers and found them to be great.
