I was just wondering how it works as far as birth certificates go. Does the baby have to have the fathers last name even tho i am not with him or can the father just be named on the birth certificate and the baby not have his last name?

no luckily the law doesnt think that the father owns the child anymore so you can give him/her any name you like
if the father isnt involved you dont even have to put him on at all just make sure they dont put 'unknown' or anything like that
naming is so hard good luck

Hi!
Remember if you dont put the fathers name on the birth certificate you cannot claim child maintenance! I think it is a better idea to have the fathers name on there no matter what the situation, the child still has a right to know who its father is. :D Good luck!

Hi singlemothertobe,
No the baby doesnt have to have the father's last name at all... You can put the baby in your name.. Before i married my husband we had our first child and i put him in my name on the birth certificate until we were married then changed it.... I agree though it is a good idea to name the father on the certificate for the sake of maintance and if the baby later wants to know who their father is..
Good luck.. :)

I realise that you haven't said that you were not intending to put the fathers name on the birth certificate, but since the issue has been raised!
Just imagine how it would be further down the track when you child needs his birth certificate for I.D or whatever. How would it feel to see a big, fat blank next the Fathers Name part etc, or worse still 'father unknown'.?? (for the child I mean!).
There are no repercussions for you to name the child on the birth cert, and as stated before, the child need not have his name. In fact in some traditions/cultures it is customary to name the girls with mothers surname and boys with the fathers. :D
