View Full Version : I might be induced or have a c/s at around 32 weeks or just after - Prem babies

Hello

My baby is doing well, but I am having a very uncomfortable pregnancy due to a medical condition I had before pregnancy and have been told the baby may have to come early, after around 32 weeks. They will induce me or do a c/s.

How do prem babies do at or after 32 weeks?

I am 30 weeks on Monday.

Concerned :(

what is the medical condition?

have you researched or got a second opinion?

maybe the baby doesnt have to come that early.:hugs:

If you do have to birth bubby early, try to have a vaginal birth because the process of vaginal birth helps with their breathing and sucking reflex.

But I agree with emevity, get second third and fourth opinions.

A second opinion may be a good idea.... but my doc does specialise in high risk and caring for pregnant women with complex needs. I am going to a clinic for this at a tertiary hospital with intensive care and special care nursery. The hospital specialises in high risk.

I have had swollen legs / oedema from toes to above baby for 10 weeks.

My doctor is very conservative and is not the type to rush in. He has not put a date on it yet. Wants to take each day as it comes and give baby the best chance, keeing me safe too.

I just thought I'd tell you my experience of having a premmie because i know how scary it can be! It is very worrying.
My daughter was born at 29weeks weighing 1.3 kg's by c-section. She did amazingly well. Didn't need oxygen and was in hospital for 5 weeks. She is now almost one and has caught up in almost everything. But it was still scary.

Have you had/are they going to give you any injections to speed up the lung developement?
It's good your doctor isn't rushing in.

Hope all goes well for you!:fingerscrossed: Keep us updated.

My DS1 was born naturally at 35 +4 weeks, my DS2 was born naturally at 34 +6 weeks. They both stayed in NICU for 10 days each. They both were tube fed special formula until my milk came in then they were tube fed EBM and BF when they were awake enough. By the time DS1 came home he was fully BF, when DS2 came home he was still having 2 tube feeds a day, and it took him about a week after that to be fully BF.

DS2 suffered jaundice so he was in under lights for the first couple of days, so no cuddles which can be hard. He was in a covered crib for a few days, then in an open crib. DS1 was in an open crib from day 1. Their birth weights were really different, and they still are very different in size. DS1 was 5lb 4, and put on a huge amount of weight very quickly and is still chubby. DS2 was 4 lb 7 and has caught up but is still a light weight :D

It is hard going back and forth from the hospital. With DS1 I stayed in hospy on another floor for 5 days until they booted me out, driving in for the night feeds was the hardest I was so tired DH had to drive me. With DS2 I left the hospital the day after he was born becuase I wanted to be at home with my family at nights, I knew I wouldn't be in my hospital room during the day anyway. He didn't have any BF through the night until he came home, some very early mornings though, I had to drive to feed him at 6:15 am every morning through the fog and icy roads. And I was home in time to give DS1 his breakfast, or swap with DH so he could be with DS2

Hope all goes well, and every day makes a big difference so the longer you can keep that precious bundle inside the better :hugs:

Zachariah was born at 31 weeks by emerg csect from pre-eclampsia he was 1260grams (2lb 12 ounces) and is now 4, its a long road with a premmie but the technology is amazing and after 32 weeks they almost do as well as fulltermers once they've caught up :)

hang in there and hopefully you can last a while longer!

My daughter was born at 31w 5d. She was 1450g at birth and was delivered by c-section.

They told me that I most likely wouldnt dialate, which I didn't, so as the case of most premmie babies I had to have the c-section.

They say that if you delivery vaginally your baby will most likely die due to the added stress.

Steph was delivered early as I felt really uncomfortable and I knew she was ready to come. I had high protein and pre-eclampsia (i didnt rest my whole preganancy).

She stayed in SCN for 1 month and came home very happy and healthy. She had no problems and was only on oxygen for a few days.

I would have to say the worst part of having a premmie baby besides the steroid shot (cattle sized needles - OUCH) is the fact that you go home everyday for a month or so without bub

Good Luck and if you need any advice feel free to PM me.

firstly i'd like to say to mummy to a princess, that is awsome!.

i had my boy at 32+4 weeks and was told he will most likely be on cpap for a bit, and in the nicu for 4-5 weeks, untill he was gaining weight, and havein all suck feeds.
my water broke at 32 weeks, and after tryin to induce me for 2 days, the docs decided it was time to get him out - via the wonderful c-sect!!! (NOT), he came out wasnt breathing - which was to be expected, so he was rushed down to the nicu ( i didnt even get to see him, cause they had to rush) he was on c-pap for 5 hours (amazingly - according to the docs and nurses) which i didnt even see him on cause i was too busy asking for drugs! and it was like 3am!, about 9 hours after the c-sect they let me go see him, and he was in the incubator, on normal air (no 02 being pumped in) and he basically only had the iv for fluids, ng tube for feeds (which at this time were formula) and the monitor for his breathing and pulse ect...

at 3 days he had his first breast feed thanks to a wonderfull nusre that actually hide me so that she wasnt caught doing it! lol, and then by 10 days hes was gaining weight and having full suck feeds (alternating between breast and bottle - when i wasnt there!) and so 12 days old our boy came home!!!
defanitly better than 4 weeks!

oh and he did have some issues with jaundice, and spent about 5 days under the lights at 2 differernt times (one being the day they told us we could go home, which was day 11 lol)

and today he is 13 weeks old, which is 6 weeks adjusted, and he has finally started to act a bit more like my other 2 kids were at 1 month old! rolling, smiling, cooing ect....

well good luck with the rest of your pg, hope fully you can avoid an extended stay in the nicu!!!! oh and a nasty c-sect!

Hello My Miracle Baby,

My son was born at 30wks and 5 days by emergency c-section. He had stopped growing so they had to get him out fast. He weighed only 800gms and should have been around 1.3kgs, so he was really behind the 8 ball big time. He was a very very sick boy and we were told to expect the worse. We nearly lost him there and then but he fought and won the battle. He stayed in hospital for 12 weeks and then we finally took him home.

He is now 5 and started kindergarten last week :yelclap: He has had no adverse affects from being born early, except he is little for his age, but he will catch up eventually.

If your baby is at the proper developmental stage for your pregnancy then it will have an exellent chance at surving being born at 32wks. I saw many many premmie babies whilst in the hospital and the doctors are so amazing. They truly do work miracles every day :)

Good luck with your pregnancy and all the best for a safe and healthy arrival of bub

Hi myMiraclebaby, my twins were born at 32 weeks. Ben weighed 1859grams and went straight to Special care, Matthew on the other hand weighed 1345grams and needed help to breathe so he went down to NICU. It is a daunting and challenging time. The nurses in both nurseries are fabulous and they truly understand the emotions involved with having a premmie baby. The longer you can hang onto them the better their chances. 32+ weekers do very very well and like others have said once they catch up you'll never know they were prem.

Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy and keep your chin up.

:yelclap: I have now made it to 33 weeks today. :smiliedance:

I am seeing doctor on Thursday. He is aiming for 37/38 weeks, but if I get too unwell, it will be earlier.

Treatment for my condition this late in pregnancy can now cause fetal distress. So we will se what doc says.

I felt babies elbow with DH for the first time (feeling from the outside). I was so excited. I can't wait to meet my little boy, but want to wait as long as possilbe to give him the best chance.

Good luck:yelclap: ,

I was born at 32wks back in 1978 by emerg. c/s due to eclampsia and have gone on to be just fine. I might be little forgetful now I have a bub but otherwise just fine. It's amazing how tough little babies can be.

I had pre-eclampsia and was hospitalised from 32.5 to 37 weeks on complete bedrest when they finally had to induce DS. He was quite small (5 pounds 15 ounces) but was fine - had Agpar scores of 9 and 10 in the first 10 minutes. Hopefully you can hang on a bit longer too.

If your baby does come earlier I just wanted to let you know that my brother was born at 30 weeks back in the early 80s, and while it was a difficult road at first he is now a happy, healthy 6 foot 4 inch man.

Have faith - everything will work out in the end:hugs: .

I ended up being induced due to pre-eclampsia and other medical problems.

I made it to about 36 and a half weeks if i remember correctly. I ended up being one giant fat swollen whale.

:fingerscrossed: your treatment works :)
