Hey everyone!
I just wanted to see if anyone knew if there are any foods you MUST avoid during b/f, like green tea? I want to start drinking it again, but don't know if I can.
Any help would be great, thanks in advance! :D

The only thing i remember reading was a suggestions to avoid eating nuts. Some people think that cabbage and its family members should be avoided as they believe it affects bubs digestion . I have not avoided anything personally.

I thought you could just have anything in moderation. Obviously if bub seems windy or upset on a particular day check to see if you ate something different. About the green tea go to your health store. They should know.

Yep, everything in moderation. Some foods will make baby react adversly, you can still eat them, but try to do it when there is the longest time before the next bf.. eg directly after. We are close to a few Indian families, and the mums don't avoid eating anything while bfing their babies. Curries, hot stuff, meats.. it's all on.. no problems at all.

Personally I believe that avioding certain foods may make for a fussy baby later.. but that's just a personal observation not based on any science at all.

ps I am drinking one cup of green tea a day still and bfing. *shrug*

This is a list of *possible* colic-causers but really it depends on your baby.

I took note when he was a newborn in case anything affected him but nothing did. I haven't consumed a lot of caffeine (1 coffee a day) but I dropped it out for a few months to see if there was any effect, and again there was none. I think it's just worth being aware that some bubs have a problem but most won't :)

I had no caffeine when I was pregnant and none the first four weeks after Jade was born. Then I though, "Oh, just one coffee won't hurt" ... big mistake.. huge  back to decaf for me.

I have read that you don't need to change your diet at all (with the exception of drugs and alcohol obviously) and that a lot of those foods (garlic, broccoli, choclate etc) are myths. I found this to be true for us. Whatever you ate in pregnancy will be fine to eat when you are breastfeeding as the baby would have received it via the placenta. We also found that Colic was a result of overstimulation. See Drs Harvey Karp ("Happiest Baby on the Block") and Howard Chilton ("Baby on Board" and various published articles) about this. Babies 3 months and under have not yet learnt to self soothe (meaning to steer their eyes away from the stimulation or avert their gaze) so they get easliy frazzled by it. The most minor thing can spin them out as they cannot avert their gaze from it. So, Colic and the baby's gut is a bit of an to be an old wives tale here too. They are simply lifting their legs and screaming in pure frustration as they cannot avoid the stimualtion, so going to a quiet darkened room away from any action, slinging, holding them close etc, or cluster feeding in the early evenings etc and averting them from the action can help subdue colicky moments. Karp has a suggestion of te 5 S' http://www.colichelp.com/shop/happiestbabyontheblock.html. We also found this to be true with our baby too. Our daughter's paediatrician also suggested stimulation as a cause for Colic and taking the baby away and quietly soothing them was the way to go there. So, that was what worked for us.

So, there's another few more suggestions for you :)
