I got a recipie from the kraft web site - a couple of 'nobake' cakes using biccies & jam rollies etc...

Have you ever made a dolly cake? The ones with a 'barbie' girl in the middle... (just had visions of a bride barbie - mental  note for when my girls are having kitchen tea parties)

They say you need a 'dolly' spike?

Can you just cut a whole in the middle for her?

Thanks

I used the dolly vardan (sp?) tin to bake the cake in & then broke off barbie's top half (don't tell my daughters though!)

Then barbie seems to be standing in the middle, but is really only sitting on top of the cake, then the icing/cream goes on to cover up the joining bits! It was MUCH easier the 2nd time around.

Good luck.

I used the dolly varden tin too. With a barbie, you just pull the legs off, then after cake is eaten, you cean her up and pop legs back on, and DD has a new doll! You just push the torso into the cake and build up some icing around her, then usualy cover the join with some pretty ribbon.
However, if your 8 year old DD decides she wants a Bratz version, the legs have to be broken off and Bratz will be no more at the end!! (One less in the toybox, gee how sad:p ).
A really easy version is to slightly soften 4 litres of neopolitan icecream, (or any other that takes your fancy I guess) alternately spoon it into the glad wrap lined tin, refreeze overnight, then next day run a little warmth over tin, remove icecream, scoop out top, put torso of doll in and use melted white choc (coloured to suit) to hold in place. Cover join with ribbon and decorate (use the choc to make a bodice on doll before putting into cake), you can use this version to make fairies (make wings out of choc too) and stuff, or with the bratz I just used some funky ribbon I bought at Big W, and lollies to decorate.
And there endith my very long speel on dolly varden cakes:D . Can you tell i have made a few now???

Ha! Dolly Cakes... I had one when I was 8! I'll go get our old recipe book...

I just phoned mum and she said she used a Dolly Varden tin too... and she removed the legs and just put them back on afterwards. I dont think she still has the tin, otherwise I would have given it to you.

Im pretty sure my neighbour's DD had a cake like this at her 6th birthday 2 years ago... and she managed it by just using a big tin and cutting it back... she also removed the legs, from what I can remember.

So, a tin in the shape of a 'pudding' would do the trick? - Cut out the centre - I just googled - a site suggested putting the dolly in a paper towel tube...

The icecream one sounds easy - couldn't really make a mistake with that one...

Yep, it should. Dolly Varden tins aren't that expensive though, but you can usually only find them in cake shops. They are just a little taller and more tapered at the top than a pudding tin. I am not sure about the paper tube, as I found it easy enough to just pop barbie's legs off, then back on when I was finished with it.
