That is so funny, I just logged on to post the same question!
My MIL knitted me a new soaker which I washed & lanolised, but by morning I was BF Preston in bed & his urine was just running straight down his leg!
I have no idea what I've done wrong? His first soaker was fine. But when I lanolised this soaker the lanolin didn't seem to melt as well as before, it went white and stuck together, it seems to do this everytime now.
He had a BB underneath with extra boosting.
PS is it possible to put clothes over a soaker at night or would the urine just wick onto the clothes? Is that why you need longies instead?
Sorry to invade your thread Zada but I didn't see the point in posting a new thread for the same question.
You might need additional boosting in your nappy. There's probably nothing wrong with the soaker. Sometimes bubs just start wetting heaps more than they previously did. It's been very hot up here, so my dd is drinking wayyyy more than normal. And what goes in, must come out.
Also what type of soaker is it. We've used ours for 5mths now, and I'm loathe to admit, that I've rotated around 3 soakers, none of which have been washed or relanolised - cause a) they don't smell and b) they are still working.
Okay your not dissolving your lanolin enough. I use a 1/2 cup of boiling water to dissolve my lanolin in, and then pour it into an icecream container and add enough water, to make it warmish, then I turn the soaker inside out and leave it overnight.
And yes you can put clothes over the soaker - in winter we had clothes and a wrap over dd, and now in summer, she's double wrapped so she can't escape. Sometimes the wrap is a teeny weeny bit damp, but nothing to stress over. You can go with longies as well - but I wouldn't use them in summer - that's just a personal opinion though :)
Ok, I'm certainly no soaker expert and this is probably a stupid question, but are they made from good wool? That's all I can think of.
I've never had a wool cover or soaker leak and I've been using mine every second night for nearly a month with no leaks at all (and no re lanolising or washing).
I also put clothes over mine every night. I love my wool!
Hi Mum of Preston.
i rotate 3...i use the spray would this make a diff? its boosted enuff hmm i dunno

I only use lanoish (sp) for mine, I would only use the spray for a top up - but I'm sure some would disagree with me - cause different things work for different people :)
I also soak in lanisoh for a few hours.

not sure - where's Kymmy?
I got to say my boys are huge wetters, and occasionally it's damp around the crotch area, but no leaks other then that.
:detective: Maybe try boosting more, or maybe the soaker is too big or small, and it's not sitting right next to the nappy
when i spray it on it feels oily like when u soak it...Maybe he is weeing more not surprised he has 3 bottles overnight:thumbsdown: Cant boost it nemore tho or he wont be able to close his legs maybe ill have to change it during the nite...

nah my bed is SOAKED lol. I already boost with bbh bamboo fold up anymore would be too much..Maybe i need to invest in a bum hugger for o/n:rolleyes:
I only use lansinoh, actually its Marcalan, which is the same stuff.
When you lanolise do you turn the soaker inside out? that way the stuff gets where it needs to be.
I dunno what's wrong with yours. Maybe the spray isn't as effective?
Bubby has his watermelon on and the outside is dry. I am too scared to open the parcel because he has had it on all night and I gave him some solids yesterday:laughing: .....eeeeeeeeek. But yeah, the outside is bone dry. I soaked it for two days, inside out.
i spray both the outside & inside with heaps and gently rub it in....
ANother ?? on this same theme...do I have to lanolise my BBH Wool Cover? I haven't

reallly??? my instructions didnt tell me anything about that! DD lasts all night but is a lil damp in the morning, now I know why! But why didnt they tell me that in the BBH instructions?

my instructions say to lanolise my BB cover
maybe try soaking in the lanolin? Or maybe wash again making sure all of the wool wash is compeltely rinsed out, then spray whlie still damp. I used about a quarter of the bottle on three soakers, so I use a lot of spray
Hi sorry to crash the thread but when I disolve the lanolin than add the cooler water it starts to "reset" if that makes sence. So it starts to form a solid before I put the cover in. Is this normal and ok? Mycovers seem to hold up....
If urine is running down bub's leg that is a problem! (Did it leak through the nappy or outside the leg holes of the nappy?)
Several weeks back I had some problems with sopping wet everything. Partly cos Av was weeing much more - he was being changed probably every 2 hours during the day. I also improved my lanolising I think so haven't had a problem since.
If the soaker is wet and you hang it dry, does it still smell when it is dry? If so it wasn't lanolised properly.
OT - did you know lanolise isn't a real word. Or lanolising for that matter. Well not yet!
As has been mentioned it might help to do an initial lanolin bath. So Lansinoh for at least half an hour. First dissolve a pea sized amount of Lansinoh in hot water.
Soak wool cover in warm water and add the Lansinoh mix to it.
Leave for at least half an hour
Do NOT rinse.
Remove excess water and roll in towel. Dry flat in shade.
I use wool wash with mild lanolin which is great for in between lanolising when they need washing or I use the spray.
the whole thing was sopping wet....it doesnt smell tho only of the spray lol....Im thinking it may be hes wetting thru cos the actual whole nappy is like ive dipped it in water!!

If it is good quality 100% wool it will work even without lanolising; so it sounds like this may not be pure wool, is that possible?unless the knitting is extremely loose.
Spray lanolin will never soak into the fibres like lansinoh dissolved in hot water will do; it will only really coat the outside so I would only use it for quick touch ups if at all.Make sure the water the lansinoh is in is on the hot side of warm otherwise it won't stay dissolved.
What nappy was he wearing? And has it reached maximum absorbancy? (sorry just standard questions)
Damien must be a super dooper wetter. Has he been drinking more than usual?
its a bbh with fold up bamboo in it...he hs 3 bottles thru the nite :(
I hope they spray lanolin works i just bought some for $18.50!!!!
I used my BBB last night but with a GK over as a cover, it was fantastic! yet to try my rainbowbumz soaker, want to lanolise it again, although now im worried i need to get lansinoh
Most WAHMS will lanolise the woollies for you so the spray is good as a top up for now.
sustainable hemp products have the spray for $16
for future reference (wonderful customer service too )
Zada - what soaker is it? Who made it?

it does sound like an absorbancy issue to me if he's having 3 bottles during the night.
every baby is different obviously though ........ the bbh for us is her night nappy, used with both attached boosters and another homemade booster (one layer microfleece, one microfibre, two hemp) and this lasts 8-10 hours, WITHOUT any feeds.
when you say he won't be able to close his legs if you stuff any more into the nappy, you can also put boosters on the outside of the nappy between the nappy and the cover, that way the napy still fits but you also have added absorbtion

i have the spray - no dramas here. i do the outside and inside of the cover, just a few sprays, rub it in, no leaks.
As mama anne said you can boost on the outside. We do that as Av is so skinny it is easier.
its a bbh with fold up bamboo in it...he hs 3 bottles thru the nite :(
To be honest I think any nappy and cover would be hard pressed to hold that much, cause 3 bottles is about 600ml, that's over 2 cups of liquid and what goes in, must come out :)
I don't think anything is wrong with your cover, or nappy so to speak, I think you might just have to do a change in the night.
he only has about 300ml overnite. ive brought a m/f cloth to put inbetween the booster try that
Sorry just adding a point here...
My instructions didn't say to lanolise my BBH woll cover???
I have used it with no leaks:confused:
I'm very confused right now..... maybe cos its nearly 2 am or maybe cos I am just a dope:rolleyes: :detective:
well i put a mf cloth folded up in the bamboo fold up no leaks:thumbsup:

Well after reading all of your posts I have came to a couple conclusions
*The cover was new and seemed a little tight!
*I didn't turn it inside out to lanolise it
*I think I may have mixed the lansinoh wrong as it tunrned white and started to stick together. I disolved the lansinoh in boiling water in a bucket then added cold water to cool it and that's when it turned white, I guess it was the cold water. So therefore it would'nt have lanolised well.
*I may not have added extra boosters to that BBH nappy that night, I only have 2 extra bamboo boosters and 3 nappies (guess I need more).
*& He has been drinking more water during the day
My other covers work well, so I think I will just try and re-lanalise this one. It could've just been coincidence that he had a wetter night that night?
ps it is 100% good wool
Thanks for all the great advice :)
Hi Tickle
It is best to lanolise all wool covers unless you know it has already been done for you. Some wools retain some lanolin from the sheep (in particular organic or non treated wools). Most commercial wool are thoroughly stripped of the natural lanolin and so that could make a difference too.
Just some extra thoughts.
