On January 16th i was admitted to hospital to be induced. We arrived at 7:30 and the nurses did all the paperwork and then my OB left me waiting til 9.25 until he broke my waters. He tried 3 times because he thought he hadnt broken them but he had and there was much water at all. He wanted the Midwife to start the syntocin drip straight away but they were apparently under staffed that day and all ready had 2 inductions in full labour and a lady who had come in to the hospital in labour. So the syntocin wasnt started until 12.15. The contractions started extremely fast and came on very intense. Alot quicker then all the other inductions that i've had. I was doing really well until about 4pm when i asked for an epidural. I didnt want the gas or pethidine (makes me throw up) and i wanted to enjoy the labour and birth, so asked for an epidural and the Midwife said she would have to see how far dilated i was. She checked and said i was 9cm and that there would be no time for an epidural and by the time the anithetist (sp?) came i would have probably delivered the baby. That made me feel pretty good that it was almost over so i thought i could cope for a while until it was time to push. She checked the cervix again at 8pm and asked for a second opinion. Another midwife checked and said she could feel the babies head very low but my cervix had been pushed back and was only dilated 2cm. By that time i was pretty much an emotional wreck and in agony. So i told the midwife off and said i wanted the epidural NOW!!! So they gave it too me and oh god it was a relief. I still had quite a lot of pain on my right side but wasnt contraction pain was more of a burning pain. That lasted for another few hours but eventually went away. At 10.15pm the midwife did another internal. And i was still only 2cm and the baby hadnt moved her head into the right position the move the cervix. And the baby's heart rate was quite high and they started to worry that she would tire out. She told me she was going to call my OB and i knew what he was going to say. She came back and told me he wanted to do a c-section. I was devastated but was trying best i could to keep calm as i didnt want the baby's heart rate to go up even more and stress her out. Eventually at 11.05 they took me for the c-section. Took about 15 mins for my OB to show up. At 11.34pm Sierra Grace was born, i heard her little cry as she was taken to have the cord cut. Then the paediatrician bought her over to DH and I. They asked DH to take Sierra back up to the ward with the midwife to weigh & measure her.
My OB and the resident where still working on me. My uterus was paper thin down near my cervix and when my OB went to fix it up it tore away. He said it was stretched so far like a rubber band that it just broke away which caused me to haemorrage. So when the midwife said that i was 9cm dilated its because my uterus was so thin that she could feel the whole head thru the uterus.Anyway he was fixing that up and had to cut quite abit of the uterus out. I started feeling abit ill at this time and started to dry retch so my OB had to lift my uterus up and out of my stomach and then the resident dr fainted lol. Eventually he stitched everything up and the assisting nurses cleaned me up and i was off to recovery. My OB said i would never be able to deliver naturally again and maybe not even be able to carry another pregnancy as the rest of my uterus is quite thin.
At 1am I finally got to hold my beautiful little girl and feed her. She weighed 7lb 3 1/2 oz, was 50cm long and her head circumference was 33.5cm. I still feel quite upset about the c-section but as my OB said if they had let me labour any longer the results wouldnt have been very good. I am just happy that my little girl is safe and everything turned out well.
