View Full Version : Hands out of your nappy... please!

Help! Around 3 months ago my DS (now 18 months), discovered that with a bit of effort he could get his hand down his nappy and check things out, as it were. ;) I didn't get too upset, since this is natural, and I figured he would grow out of it.

Unfortunately, he hasn't. Instead it has become his thing to do when he is bored. This includes when he is falling asleep for his nap and bedtime. As a result of things pointing in the wrong direction, his next wee goes pretty much everywhere except in the nappy. This has escalated from 1-2 times a month to 3-4 times a week, and sometimes twice in a single night. I am exhausted! (On the other hand, I can now change & wash him and change and wipe the cot in record time and half light.)

I have tried: Body suits - he reaches in through the leg holes; grobag - he pulls his hands in through the arm holes and then finds his way through his clothes; body suit plus pants/shorts - he pulls off the pants/shorts and proceeds as usual; and onesies - he reaches in between the snaps, I think. :(

I tell him no if I catch him in the act. The odd bit is when his nappy is off, he isn't interested in checking things out. Anyone out there with any tips or ideas?!? I really need a good nights sleep, and so does DS.

I wish I had some good ideas for you, but I'm sorry I don't :(
Nat didn't find things 'interesting' till we started toilet training him and he spent most of the day without a nappy on. I'm constantly telling him to 'leave it alone' and if he won't stop playing with it ('look mummy it's pointy!' nice...) I'll put pants on him. If he has clothes or a nappy on it doesn't seem to bother him.
I hope they will both grow out of it, though even if they do they'll start back up again when they get older I guess ;)
Good luck with your quest!

Sorry, but that is so funny! Kids crack me up.

Sorry but I also don't have any pearls of wisdom for you. This one's a stumper!! My DS is only interested when you take his nappy off, which is really gross when you are changing a pooy nappy  . He does it every time!!
If you've tried body suits, what else is there??
My DS used to where body suits with a zip. I don't know whether that would make any difference?
Good luck!! :)

Sorry i cant help but it could be worse....my nephew is getting to the toilet training stage, just turned 3 and he had a pooy nappy,so big brother Angus (5) went to get the nappy and said to him "go to mummy caleb" to which the stubborn little boy replies "NO" angus said "Yes,i dont wear nappies its for you,you done poos!!" quite matter of factly Caleb replies "No Poos" and sticks his hand down the back of his nappy and it comes out covered in poo!!! so Angus is running away screaming Caleb is running around screaming cos he hates anything sticky on his hand and mum is 19 weeks pregnant and cant stand the smell and all she wants to do is vomit!!! She didnt think it was funny but i think it is hilarious!!

lol lol, sorry shouldnt laugh, but i had 2 boys who both did this and im afraid they dont really grow out of it :) have you noticed how often your dh sits there watching tv or something holding himself? as if he's sitting with a dear old friend :)

its such a pain though when they are little though because then they wee out of their nappy and it goes all over their clothes, sheets etc grrrr!! i was going to suggest 1 piece body suits, but if you've tried them already then im out of ideas sorry dear!!!!

My son was exactly the same!!! Body suit things worked for us though with the snaps at the crotch with pants over it was really hard to get them in size 3 though! MAybe try leggings then a suit over the top? I know how everything gets wet when the little willy is sticking up, pain in the butt all that washing.
Sometimes with DS after he was asleep we went in and removed the hand and had to tuck 'it' back in.
