Just wondering if anyone makes cakes from their home to sell like people order birthday/wedding/any type cakes and you make it and they pay you?

Am thinking of starting this and am wondering if I would make much from it. I live in Brisbane. How many of you would pay someone to make a cake for you.

It would depend on the experience and how big your portfolio was. The cake decorator I know does tastings etc and has a big portfolio of cakes she has done.

There's another member on here who makes spectacular cakes but I don't think she sells them yet either.

Ummm...I can picture her avatar (she's really pretty) but I can't remember her name - I'll come back....:o (Maybe Chemenco? Chemico?)

But in answer to your question, yes, I'd pay for someone to make a cake for a special occasion - especially if it was something really different.

AHHH.....Chenicemo!

Yes I would!! I have had some very bad bakery experiences where I have paid big $$$ and recieved very poor results.

If you are good, then word of mouth will spread very quickly and I also recommend you advertise with Yellow Pages on line so new people can find you!

Good luck!

My Aunty has a cake delivery business in the GOld Coast that does quite well. THere is a market for businesses - always having birthdayy cakes to celebrate staffs birthdays, wanting to cut down expense of staff off site purchasing cake etc...

Cake it away did it in sydney as a larger operation, the cakes arent that great though.

I have sent cakes to business contacts for delivery at morning tea with messages piped on them - great cheap and effective!!!

Good luck, i am happy to be a taste tester hee hee hee

I do it. It takes alot of time to do and you need to be able to get away from the kids to do it. Its a job.
If i have a big wedding one to do i have to start doing the sugar flower weeks in advance otherwise i would never get it done in time.

I once did a wedding one for a friend nd she had 150 pink frangipannis on it-that took weeks to complete.

It can be costly too so make sure you quote enough or it will cost you money.

If you need any info PM me.

I've been decorating cakes since I was a teenager - let me assure you, that's quite a while, over 20 years.

I don't think that there is anyway to deliver a high quality product at a realistic competitive price TBH.

You can't charge enough to compensate you for your time. Making flowers etc for wedding cakes can be a nightmare.

I also don't like to commit to doing wedding cakes which need to be done just before the day, as with kids underfoot, I find it risky leaving it till the last minute. The old fashioned fruit cale is a different story because you can make that weeks ahead, and it improves. The problem is most people don;t want fruitcake these days.

If you are making the cakes too, you may need to look in to hiring a commercial kitchen. The rules are pretty strict.

I paid someone just to decorate my wedding cake to save money - we baked it ourselves.

If you don't want to spend time making flowers, etc, come up with some other designs that are less time consuming - there is a market.

Another idea is to use fabric flowers - a friend of mine put real roses on her wedding cake & it looked stunning.
