Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone else had abnormal bloods when they had the Down test. My scan was fine and the nuchal fold was only 1.1 but the obst said to me, and i quote "you are low risk but technically high" (Hmm!)
Anyway initially I put this down to my age (37) and then we went and had another second opinion scan with the state's top sonologist who said the baby looked perfectly normal in the scan and then she chased up my bloods analysis (on the spot) and turns out that they were way out - too much of one hormone, not enough of another... but apparently not to be too worried about. . we have a 1 in 238 chance of down syndrome after this which although sounds fairly good odds, i'm concerned slightly as my pregnant friends (both 37) were told they had a 1 in 3000 something chance. Anyway, was just wondering if anyone else had strange blood results and what they were told.

Hope all mums to be are well!
Jane

I think for your age that amount is the normal 1 in 238 not sure about the blood test though. Are they sending you for more??

no they didn't suggest any more blood tests ... they basically said my baby looked normal and that it was more than likely it would be fine but without an amnio can't say 100% sure. We wouldn't do anything about it anyway so not risking an amnio - just would like to know so can be mentally prepared. Pretty confident all is ok tho and that my hormone levels were just a bit strange back then. They got taken when i was really suffering heavily from morning sickness...

It is still worrying though, I have just had blood tests come for a different reason that were abnormal. So I know it can cause a lot of worry. When are you due, you might find more out at your 18-20 week u/s!!

Am due jul14 - so am almost 16 weeks - got a scan at 19 weeks so we will see.
We figure the blood tests can't have been THAT abnormal by their criteria otherwise they would have asked for more tests surely. My obst is really good and neither her nor the sonologist suggest we do anything further.
Hope your abnormal blood tests are not a cause for concern.

Hi,

I'm 30 and I when I first found out I was pregnant, my blood test had very high abnormal levels which suggested abnormalities.

At my 14 week NT scan, my results were fine and they said it was just my placenta over-producing the hormone.

I'm happy to say I have a healthy baby boy, but I did go through weeks of worry like you also but trusted my OB's experience.

Great to hear you have a healthy boy!
Thanks for that bit of info. It is always reassuring to hear that abnormal tests don't necessarily mean abnormal baby.
I don't know why my tests were abnormal - they didn't seem that fussed about it really but they did say they were not normal, which of course freaked me out.
I am now wondering if it had anything to do with some soymilk i drank. I read somewhere that soymilk is not good in large quanitites as it has oestrogens in it. I wasn't drinking copious amounts, but just thought maybe the oestrogens affected the hormone levels. (?) Sometimes i think i may have read too many books/websites - that is the problem with older - and somewhat neurotic - first time mums.
