my 8mth old had these tests done last week. the doctor wrote various letters along the inside of each of Emma's arms, then put a drop of various fluids next to each letter, then pricked each droplet with what looked like apin board pin (no pain involved). Then the doctor looked at each one that reacted, in our case with a pimply red rash similar to Emma's eczema. Emma is allergic to oranges and peanuts.

hope this helps to prepare you. it was so much easier than i expected' good luck

Hi,

My DS has had the skin prick testing done at 10, 18 and 24 months. They did it on his back so he couldn't scratch and as the previous post said they write the letter put a drop of the allergen and then scratch the skin.

Usually if they are allergic a mosquito bite type welt comes up and if it is over a certain diameter and height ( for want of a better word) then they say they are allergic to that thing. Also don't be alarmed if everyone comes up red to start off with wait until they measure it, I almost had a heart attack when I saw my DS's back the first time.

I doesn't really hurt they did it on my arm to show me. DS was fine the first two times but itchy cause he was allergic to a few things, when he was older he cried but that was because he was aware and didn't like holding still etc and probably a bit afraid.

If your DS is allergic perhaps ask for antihistimine afterwards if you are comfortable giving him that. Because I didn't the first time and the welts took a lot longer to go and he was more uncomfortable.

Hope that helps, sorry its turned into a bit of an essay!

Hi ChristineM,

My DS1 was allergic to wheat, eggs and nuts (especially peanuts) at 10 months. By 18 months had outgrown wheat and by 2yrs had outgrown egg.

Nuts is still there and we have had a few scarey incidents with him touching nuts and having a mild analyphaltic (sp) reaction. But no breathing problems, fingers crossed. Has been harder to avoid nut/nut products as he has gotten older.

Sarah

Ps Good luck tomorrow lucyp

I had my DS tested when he was 6mths and found that he was allergic to tuna, peanuts and serverly allergic to dairy and eggs.
He only cried for a few minutes while they were doing the test, but wasn't screaming or anything.

Hi Lucy, how did your little one go with his allergy test? did it upset him much? i found the worse thing with my son was the itchiness, but i kept him distracted by reading him a book~not much use for a 9 mth old i know!

Anyway, what did he turn out to be allergic to? hope everything is ok :)
