Taking the lead from the wonderful people that started the Art Student and Education Student thread I thought I would start a NURSING STUDENTS THREAD where people studying nursing can support and help each other.

Anyways as way of introduction:

My Name is: Clare
I am studying nursing at: Charles Darwing University
I am studying via the following mode: External part time
I am in my: First year but have completed one unit at ECU
I am hoping to gain employment upon graduation in: Geriatrics
What i am most looking forward to about studying nurisng: Studying a career that helps people most of the time! Being able to study my first year part-time at home so i can breastfeed my daughter.
What i am least looking forward to about studying nursing:The chemistry units-but i will cope! My hubby understands it all!
Any other info about me: I am only doing external through CDU until next year as I am breastfeeding my daughter and no uni in WA lets first year/first semesters study externally so this was the only way i could keep studying. If i like external studies i may stay with them providing i can save the $$ to go to darwin for a clinical teaching block at the end of next year.

Thanks L & J's mum!!

Is anyone in Brisbane/GC doing the PreUni nursing course?

jaydensmum
08-02-2007, 09:44
I worked out that if i did it full time i would have to be at uni 5 days a wk!! Thats just not possible as my income is really important to our finances. So im going to do it part time, which is 2 days a wk and work full time. As time goes on i can add units if i have time available, otherwise it will take 6yrs!! So is anyone else doing uni and work at the same time?

mum23girls
08-02-2007, 11:48
I can't afford to go to work!!

I am doing two full days and one half day (well, 2hrs) a week... the kids will be at daycare for three days, that gives me a half a day that I can do a lot of Uni work.

My childcare is costing $450 a month, and I can only afford to do it because we just finished paying off our car, which was the same amount a month. Otherwise I could not have afforded to go to Uni until next year when DD1 and 2 are at school.

Oh well, at least I can do something this year, and it will only be 12 months of "roughing" it (to which we have become accustomed to!) and next year a bit more pressure will be taken off!!!

clarebear1983
08-02-2007, 13:03
I am going to be studying when DS is at childcare (I kind of figured i should be able to cope with studying with DD at home seeing as she is only 8 weeks old-6 weeks corrected cos of early birth-and wont put her in care until she is atleast 6 months or more)...........DH has just decided to go back to uni to finish his education degree so we are putting the DS in childcare 3 days a week (only costs us $15 which isnt bad at all!!!) which means I get monday and friday to study without DS or DH around and just DD. Wednesday DH and I will alternate study times so someone is always with DD and on thursdays will do the same with DD and DS. So we have it pretty well worked out which is good.

Goodluck to everyone!!!!!!!!!!

What subjects are everyone doing this year at their respective unis?

I am doing this semester:
Academic Literacies (not a nursing subject but a core uni subject)
Applied Science Concepts (includes chemistry and microbiology)

Next semester:
Northern Perspectives (another core uni subject unrelated to nursing)
Anatomy and Physiology 1 (pretty much learning about anatomy and all that)

Hi Lovely ladies....

I'm hoping to join you guys in this thread with mid year intake.... :fingerscrossed:

I studied a semester and a half of nursing in 2002 at Newcastle uni... absolutely loved it til my first prac when I decided I didn't want to be 20 yrs old and washing old people..... Now that I'm a mummy nothing phases me and I'm ready and inspired to give it another shot!

My dream is to be a midwife.... and I'm currently studying to be a doula too!! If I could afford it I'd move to Sydney and do the midwifery degree at UTS....

Good luck with your studies girls and hopefully I'll be joining you soon!

Lmao...just wait till your first prac. You will see(or should I say smell) what I mean. Im not trying to scare you or gross you out its just what happens with most people that I know who work in the health care field.
Ok I will explain. When you clean up someone after they have dirtied themselves you get the horrid smell of faecal matter stuck up your nose. The next time you go to the toilet to pass a motion afterwards I swear to you, you poo will smell just like that of the persons you cleaned up.

An RN i know said if you think u cant handle smells before u go change someone put some vicks under ur nose (e.g. smear some just above your upper lip) so you can smell that while u are cleaning. It might not completely take away the smell but it does help. If u have sensitive skin use baby balsm (which smells nice lol)

If you feel sick smelling human by-products, sniff an alcohol wipe (am not encouraging sniffing here;) ). It stops you from feeling sick and of course takes the smell away.

Make urself a schedule that details when you will work, play with bub and study. DH and I have a schedule about who gets to study what night of the week and what day when he is home (hes internal im external studying different courses).

have someone you account your study time too and progress (e.g. DH and I account to each other and my mother) this ensures you keep on track

Get a study group together, especially other mothers, and use this to study........In Perth we have a place called Toddler Town where i will take DS and DD to play while I study there.

Hi!

Babylover:

Subjects:

1. Social aspects of child & family health nursing
2. Intro to infant mental health
3. Evidence based nursing
4. Leadership in clinical practice

Just got some of my stuff yesterday!

My first assignment is due on 26th March 2500 word essay. Then I have 3 assinments due in april, 3 in may & 2 in June. Full on!!!

alabama: I find that writing a timeline helps
e.g:

Essays due:
March
April
May
June
Including the essay title, assignment weight (%), word limit and due date. This helps you to prioritise.

Good luck everyone!!

Hi alabama,

You must be doing it very hard with working & studying as well as having a little one at home. Are you part time with study & work? What university are you going to? At most universities, they have a place where you can get help with writing essays. So if you go to your student centre, they may be able to direct you.

This is how I write an essay:

* I write out the essay question at the top of the page so that I can refer to it as I go along.
* I then find the assignment objectives &/ or criteria for the essay (this is what the markers look at). I refer to this a lot.
* I then write out headings for myself like this:
Essay introduction

Essay body

Essay conclusion

I begin with the essay body and write down in point form the things that I am going to write about from the essay question & criteria information.
I basically plan how many words that I will use so that I stick to the word limit. For example: If I have 4 points that I want to make and the essay is 2500 words I make each point worth 500 words and the intro & conclusion about 250 words each.
I then research the internet and library to find my information and fill in my points. I make sure that I check the minimum of references required for the essay. By using points your essay automatically has flow.
Then I write the essay introduction stating what my essay is going to talk about (as though you had not written it yet). Remember that you can’t say “In my essay I will be talking about…..” instead you can say “The essay will address the issues such as……
The essay conclusion is basically a copy of the intro but it is reworded to explain what you have talked about in your essay. I simply copy & paste the intro and reword it from there so that it flows in the same way as my essay intro & body.
Refer to the style of referencing so that you reference correctly. For example mine is APA style.
Hope this is helpful!!

Hi everyone, how are you all? Well i started uni yesterday, it was very exciting. We really didnt have much of a lecture cause it was more introduction to the unit. I cant wait til the course takes off though. Im only doing it part time due to having to work. Im doing the units "Becoming a nurse" and "Behavioural foundations of the nursing practice". So im only at uni 2 days a wk. How are you all going with your study??

Zeal
02-03-2007, 08:22
Ok, I have definitely made the big decision to cut back to part time study. I do value this course in my life, but going full-time, I realise that it is too much. There are other things in my life that I value equally as much and do not want to compromise these either.

These things include:
* Time with my family, time to do activities with DD such as swimming, playgroup & visiting friends.
* I value working part time so that we can have a little extra spending money.
* I value having a tidy house
* I value the time to think about my diet and make sure that I’m no track with healthy eating
* I value time to exercise
* I value having enough good stress to keep me busy, but not bad stress that causes me to feel run down and get tension headaches.

So, basically when I look at the things that I value in my life, this decision was easy. It may take me longer to get where I want to be, but I am ok with that. I now feel as though a huge weight has been taken off my shoulders and I feel happy again.

I've just popped into ask how you guys got into Uni??
Did you do your HSC and get accepted with a UAI?
Did you do a STAT exam?
Maybe go through enrolled nursing?
The reason I ask is because i never did my HSC and even if I did it'd be useless by now anyway (I'm 27)

Anyhoo, TIA

Good luck with your exam Laura!! :fingerscrossed:
Well ive almost finished one exam for "becoming a nurse" unit but havent even started on the other one yet. I was going to do some study today but i just didnt feel well enough to. Even now i can feel my temp rising its horrible. :( Im hoping to do some study tomorrow morning before i go to work cause the kids will be at kindy. I find i can get a fair bit done when they arent around. Anyway take care everyone and happy studying!! :D

I had to pull out of a subject today-just to much to do and not enough hours in a day to accomplish it. I am doing just one science subject which is more than enough with children as demanding as my two. I have to put the kids first!

Babylover: How did your test go today? :fingerscrossed:
Not too good  Chem definitely isn't my subject! In the end I realised it's only worth 6% and hopefully this will kick me into shape with the next ones!

Have you completely finished the assignment now?

Zeal

Babylover: Yes! Well, just have to re-read, space sentances and check referencing is correct and then I send it tomorrow!! I kept on finding more journal articles and wanted to add more information! It is so hard to stick to the word limit!!!

Best of luck with your asignment due in may and the next chemistry test. It is a hard subject. esp if you didn't do chemistry in 11 &12 (I didn't) and I really sucked at it in nursing!!

Well, I really should doing my second assignment right now but I usually end up here if I am on the computer!! Naughty Naughty!!

I sent my first assignment on Satuday, I just had to get it out of my sight or I would have changed this and that and eventually would have gone insane!!!

This post grad is not as easy as undergrad.Alot is expected and sometimes I wish I was back to just working and not studying. But if I did that, I would probobly wish I was studying, so I realise that the grass is always greener!

Better get back to the research

 I don't think there's anyone else studying medicine here, so I thought I could join my nursing colleagues in this thread. We're all about health anyway!

I'm in year 4 (2.5 more years to go). I have a 6month old daughter. My school friends who did nursing are already qualified - I have to ask them for patients to see!

What areas do people want to work in? Having a baby makes me want to do paediatrics or ob/gyn when I grow up, but I still don't know.

Hi Fruitjuice!!

My name is Rachel and I've finished my nursing degree. I'm in this thread doing a post grad in child and family health beccause after I had my baby (who is now 2) I had a change of heart from wanting to work in critical care to wanting something more family orientated.

Great to have a med student now!! Oh and congrats on having a beautiful girl, she looks gorgeous and healthy!!

Rach :)

p.s best wishes for the rest of the med degree!!

Hi fruitjuice!! Glad you can join us!!

I have only just started this year my nursing degree... I have a burning ambition to be a midwife.

It would be great to be a ob/gyn!! I don't think that I could do peadiatric... I think it would break my heart more... especially just the nursing side.

It is surprising how many people actually WOW! at the fact that I am studying with kids.. they always comment on how do you have the time to study... hmmmm I just do!! I am not finding it that bad at the moment!! Guess time will tell.

I am doing it externally through Charles Darwin and I am finding it pretty good cos im home with my kids. Sometimes motivation is hard but you will most likely find people from your area that you can get together with and this helps..................I am only doing one unit this semester and two next semester so will most likely end up in the same unit as your husband at one point!

How is everyone going? These holidays have come real fast!! I have a lot more assessment due in the next couple of weeks, so it will be hectic!

So I am thinking that I chose the wrong uni, and looking at what other uni courses are, it looks as though I won't be able to get credit for what I have done already.

I also looked at what the OP (or rating) was to get into the new BMid offered in QLD, and OMG it was 4 (we are ranked 1 the highest to 20 the lowest) which dims my hopes of applying for next year straight into that one.... (the nursing rating is about 14)... Just when I realise what I want to do it all blows up!!

Ok, so I have an assignment I just can not think of what to do!!!

This is the question....
As a nurse, you are caring for a 79 year old man who is receiving palliative care. Discuss the possible sources of distress that James or his family may feel when facing end stage illness.

that is it. We have to write a 1500 word essay, and the main thing that has been said is.. "Do not make assumptions" and "all arguments should be based on evidence".

Is it just me that thinks this question sux.... how can I not make assumptions with the little bit of info given!! Grrrrrrrrrrrr:banghead:

Oh and because we will be moving....I have put a mid year entry thru QTAC for University of Southern Qld, but considering external thru Central QLD Uni.. hmmm what to do, what to do!!:o

With my assignments I am sitting on about 96% (assignmnets are only 30% of total mark) and there is one more to be marked, so if I do ok on that one (marks have been 95%, 96%, 98%) I will only need around 25/70 on the exam to pass the unit.

My friend said to me that the mark doesnt matter because when you go to get a job they just want to see you passed the unit.................so im happy with passes as degrees are made of p's :D

But i dont hold out much hope for a pass. There is a vast difference between getting high distinctions on all the assignmnets because they were open book and in a much more relaxed environment. Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone is studying the bachelor of midwifery 3 yr degree? I am going to apply for this course & hopfully will start nxt yr if I get in. I have a 6 wk old son & am a bit concerned about juggling Uni & being a mum. I really want to be a midwife & I know that all the hard work will benefit us in the future, after all its only 3 yrs of my life.

Any info or tips about this course would be appreciated.

Thanks

Leanne

Hi Leanne!

Where do you want to be studying at..are you thinking of doing full time or part time and internal or external?

I can only tell you my experience and I am studying full time internal (on-campus) and doing nursing first, then once that is complete I will be going back postgrad to do midwifery.

I enjoy it.. it gets me out and about and I love what I am studying. I am surprisingly not finding it too difficult (however I am only 1st year) with three kids..but they do go to kindy for three days a week, and I have the help of a wonderful husband, if I get too close to assignment deadlines he helps me greatly with the kids and housework!

With your bubba being 6 weeks.. next year baby will be more like 9 months when you start and a lot more demanding than he is now... I think if you have a great amount of support/help, you should be fine. You may just have to start, and then you can drop subjects or even defer if it does prove to be too difficult. Every one will handle it differently.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I am planning on applying at Vic Uni or ACU both in Melbourne. The course is fulltime & takes 3 yrs to complete, with approx 24 contact hrs per wk. I have spoken to a girl studying at ACU & she says that there are lots of mums studying Midwifery there & the Uni are very flexible with them. I can apply after 30th July & can't wait.

Am looking at getting a childcarer to look after my son. The council runs a service where child carers look after up to 4 children at a time & charge around $7 per hour. I think that this is the best option, as child care centres are not so flexible.

I am wondering how possible it is to study, work & be a mum at the same time. I doubt that I can survive for 3 yrs not working, therefore I will have to find some type of casual/pt work. Any other parents trying to juggle all 3 things?

Can anyone tell me about clinical placement (nursing or midwifery). I am wondering what type of shifts maybe involved? (I assume a lot of night shifts). How often is placement? -IE- 1 day per wk or is it in blocks? How long are the shifts & where are the types of places that placement is held?

Thanks in advance

Leanne

My uni does a two week block clinical placement, with one week doing morning shift and the other doing afternoon shifts. I dont know about the middy's.. I would assume there may be some nights, as a heap of baby's tend to make their entrance in overnight!! Just ring the uni and ask them.

Good luck with your application!

Hi Ali!

I love doing what I am doing. I go on campus and that is for three days a week, I love getting out and about, seeing and talking to all different people.

I thought it would be a heap harder than what it was in 1st semester, and did find it a bit boring in the middle there, but overall great! I came out of this semester with two distictions and one high distinction, so I am really itching to get back into it!! I feel as though I have found somthing I am really good at, and want to get on with it!!!!!!

I have been able to get by with a really helpful hubby, he lightens the load heaps around the house and if deadlines are looming, he lets me have the peace and quiet I need to get things done.

I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about doing it. You should give it a try, there are always things you can do, like drop subjects if you find it is too much, you may surprise yourself, and you will never know until you give it a go!:smiliedance:
Hope that helps any!:wizard:

Hi suemp!

I don't know about open learning, sorry, but you can apply using your experience as an AIN, also mature age will go in your favour. Did you do any certificates at all for your AIN possy? That will also help if you have.

You should just put an application in and see how you go, because you will never know if you don't try!! You may be surprised.

So ladies...how is start of semester going??

I am only doing three subjects again this semester...three days a week again, can't afford any more!!

We are doing Clinical Practice, Diversity and health and Nursing diagnostics/clinical decision making..

I hate hate hate reflective exercises and apparently everything is reflective:banghead: It is then, that I realise that I have no life...being stuck at home with the kids, I don't have much at all to draw on. I have mentally blocked out my childhood..truthfully I can not remember a heap of my life, I didn't have a bad childhood, but it mustn't have been all that good to want to remember it.. I don't know why.

I have all my assessment due around the same time, I have looked at it and haven't started anything yet. I will have to shortly though. We have to do a care plan for either a cerebral Palsy baby, a man who has broken both wrists and a leg and an older heart patient. I think I may go with the baby..but we need to be told what to do, I think they think that we already know how to do it..but I got soooo lost looking at it!!

So, Mondays are my horrid days, 2-4. Oh well gives me time to do assignments I suppose!!

Take care...

Have fun getting back into things!

Good luck speksmum with your application!

I just did my online quizzes to administer meds, and got 100% on them, so I can give meds on prac!
Funny thing is, if you don't get 100%, you can't give meds, if you can't give meds on prac, you will fail your prac because it is an assessable item...go figure!

I am about to apply at University of South Australia through Open university for a bachelor of Nursing. I put down for RBWH ward 6 (gyno), Northwest private (med/surg) and Redcliffe (med/surg). I avoided the age care homes, just for this time.

So, I put in my application for the double degree next year Bnursing/Bmid... I really would love to do it all at once, and secretly hoping that hubby will not want to move next year or that his work pulls the plug:shame:  and I get in!

I was up in Hervey Bay last week, and I really don't want to go up there, but we will see. Hubby's work is starting to stuff around, not giving us dates when they will be setting up and all. Just handed in my last assignment for this semester, and it is possibly the worst one that I have done and probably will do for my whole degree. It was on Transcultural nursing and cultural safety. the topic was really broad, and there really was no guidence on the actual assessment. The criteria sheet only has two marking criteria to about four parts of the assignment. So, I would say my chance of doing well is minimal. I will take it on board to harass my tutor next time one like this comes up. :banghead: :banghead: I should have done it this time, but didn't. Oh well, you get that hey! I will call it learning from experience!

Anyway, Naomi, hope you get into your distance course. I would not have the disciplin to do it at home!! Good Luck!!

I am loving prac. I am in the gynae ward, but we have a heap of general medical pts - more than half. I have been doing the basics, obs, beds and will do medications and care plans probably starting tomorrow because I have the obs downpat. I have had no spew, poo or anything gross so far but there is still time!! All of my pts can self ambulate and are self sufficient.

I got a little queezy when the nurse took out a bella vac.. that is a drain that is coming out from the abdo draining all the fluids into a bag. it was ok until she pulled out a long wormy looking blood clot. That was it!! I left for a minute, put my head between my knees in the loo, then went back in.

Hi Lana,

Different universities have different entry requirements for their courses. Which uni are you hoping to study at? I live in QLD and in year 12 I had to complete maths B plus one of the sciences; biology, chemistry or physics in order to be eligible for a Bachelor of Nursing. Let me know which uni you are interested in and I'll try and find it for you! :)
