View Full Version : High Chairs & Playpens
Hey girls
I have a 16-week old who is growing up so fast! :D
Can you recommend a particular brand of highchair that you've found to be great for bub? Not necessarily the cheapest but not a gold-plated one either!
Also, does anyone have a playpen or something similar for bubs to be in as they get more mobile? I don't have a safe place (other than his cot) to put him in if I have to go outside or if I'm cooking in the kitchen and can't be watching him 24/7. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Hi,
I am using the Ikea high chair. It is very basic, functional and inexpensive (39 dollars for chair and another 15 or some such amount for the attachable tray). I think it looks pretty good as well.
I bought the valco playpen, which is mesh sided and has a detachable padded floor. That is a recent purchase but so far Aoife has a great time kicking around in there when I want 15 mins to do a few things.....

We use a LITE 'N' EASY 6 playpen/portable cot which was a gift. MJ actually sleeps in that of a day in the loungeroom to get used to noise.
Highchair wise, we have a PEEK A BOO HI/LOW CHAIR. I love it. Its got 4 recline levels & 9 heights so very versatile. Also has 4 point safety harness and a big centre piece so that she can't slide through the base.
I'm very happy with both of these :)

We just bought one of those large hexagonal wooden playpens. It's pretty big, which is great. I hop in there with ds and we play together. Then I can leave him there without a fuss while I do some things.
I bought a swing a while back that also doubles up as a highchair. I also have a portable high chair, I think it's fisher price. It's great because I can take it to other people's places when we go out - it just straps to a normal chair.
I did the mistake of buying the Target Baby Club high chair it was rubbish, don't ever buy it, I now have the Fisher Price Ocean Wonder Highchair, it is great.
Just noticed also that you were from Kedron, I am from Everton Hills not far!

I have a fisher price Health care High chair. It's really great!! It's good coz you can adjust the height of the chair & it has a bar that goes in between the legs. It's great for when bub is little it stops them slipping out!! The only thing it doesn't have is wheels, which would really make it great!!
I have a steelcraft avalon ... really basic, folds relatively flat and easy to clean!
I have had a fancy, well padded, adjustable height, seat reclining highchair and far prefer the simple one ... I kept finding food "surprises" in odd places in the flash one!
The plastic Ikea highshairs are really great, light, easy clean, fit babies up to about 3yo and really inexpensive too!
I haven't had a playpen, so can't comment!

I use my portacot for a playpen at the moment.... Its not very big but it does the job, and I can leave the room without worrying baout what he's up to.. As for a highchair, we have one of those that reclines and goes up and down, think its a childcare brand chair ( i got it from my cousin, so not sure f the specific model) but it is great...

Yep we have the Ikea high chair too :D I think its called the antelop or something. Its brillant and so practical, you can take off the legs for easy transportation and its soooo easy to clean, no where for the food to get caught in any cracks!
It has wide legs so its very stable and sturdy, and your right it does look great ;)
Gotta love the price too

hey wattle where did you get the wooden playpen from? how much did it cost?
thanks for all your suggestions, sounds like Ikea or Fisher Price is the way to go on the highchair front.
cheers mummies!

i have one of those high chairs that you can vary the height (which is great if you want to sit on your lounge & feed the baby) it also has wheels (makes things alot easier) & also the seat can detatch & be put on any table - not sure of the brand as it was given to me & i can't find any labels on there!
Like wattle I have the hexagonal playpen. They are great because of the size and bubs does not feel as restricted. I got mine from Babyco for $120. I actually got prices from other places and Babyco will undercut for you. Definately look around for prices though even if the place is not close to you because someone near you will generally at least meet that price.
As for a highchair I use one that attaches to the side of a table. It is great as you can take it anywhere with you and I find DS sits up in it so much better than a normal highchair. Cleaning wise you just take the cover off occasionally and throw it in the washing machine. I also got this from Babyco. I love it.

We are using a Peg Perego Primma Pappa's highchair. It has absolutely everything ( Backrest reclines in four positions Tray is adjustable in two positions It has 7 different height positions When closed, it is very compact and free-standing Dinner Tray: The hygienic double tray only for eating Brakes on the rear wheels/4 casters to move it easily The padded sack is ideal for babies aged 3-4 months and older Five-point harness Double upholstery: washable and removable slipcover etc etceverything) and Thomas LOVES it!
And as far as the playpen goes, what playpen? At the moment it is me chasing him all over the globe! LOL :o

I have an Infa Ultima high chair - all the same features as Thomasmum's (thanks for listing them, you've saved me from doing it! ;) ), and also a little mesh basket underneath which is great for storing bibs. The only downside with these type of chairs is the cleaning - just a quick wipe sometimes will do, but I pull it apart every fortnight and scrub the bejesus out of it. I think it cost about $180 and I love it because of it's lovely bright yellow design (baby giraffe), so different to all the stark black baby high chairs available at the time. I like the way I can get different heights on it, so Libby can sit "next" to me on the sofa, or up high at the dining table. I found Infa to be terrific in their after-sales service too - I had a little part that broke (long story), and the state manager turned up on my doorstep that very afternoon brandishing not just one but FOUR spare replacement parts - no charge!
As for the playpen, I bought the basic wooden Babyco one (I get a 10% discount because I am a member of MBF) but to be honest we don't use it a lot - we got about 2 months use out of it. Apart from that, quality wise, etc, there have been no problems.

I got it from Babyco. It is a Swallow brand. I have a friend who has the Childcare brand and I find DS sits better in the Swallow one. Childcare one is fine for older bubs. I paid $40 (Pretty sure, was not anymore than that anyway).

I have just brought a Chicco high chair called 'Polly" it is brilliant. It has 7 height levels, padding for younger children that can be removed as they get older, removable tray, toy holder at bad, tray attached to leg for parents to place thing, it lays back in case bub falls to sleep....fantastic.
Though it was a little expensive $229.00 on special from $280.00. Highly reccomend it though.
As for playpens I have NO idea.
Goodluck with it all :)

I have a Childcare hook on chair to be quite useful, as it clips onto any table, which makes cleaning the floor easier (no legs to mop around) and it's so portable you can take it anywhere from a friend's house to the park bench...... and it's a space saver as well.
They might still be on sale at Toys R Us from $45 down to $30.
