Hi Jess, I probably don't qualify for this thread because I finished my arts degree several years ago! Just wanted to jump in and say that I too studied history as part of my BA (although it wasn't my major).

Good luck with your studies ladies! I miss studying :crying:

Hi Jess

am hoping to gain employment upon graduation in: Art Gallery Curatorship or Collection Management, or maybe teaching
What i am most looking forward to about studying: Really being able to challenge myself with both the theory and prac.

What i am least looking forward to about studying:the days i dont want to do it or when i need to study but my ds's wont sleep lol ME TOO!
Any other info about me: i have 2 boys under 2 (call me nuts) SO DO I !!!!!! (actually our boys are very similar in age) I have been doing lots of art at home, also into writing, music, reading and horses!

Jess, the theory subjects are actually the same for both our subjects. Both of our degrees use the Curtin Uni art theory subjects so we will be able to compare notes! I have actually already completed Intro to Visual Culture (got a high distinction too - much to my astonishment!) and am doing Issues in Contemporary Art next in study period one, then Printmaking in SP2.

Hi ladies, not sure if I qualify for the thread but I already have a BA and a BEd (sounds flashy but it was a combined degree so I didn't really feel the pain of completing 2 degrees!)

My majors were History and English (Lang/Lit) and I have been thinking of pursuing the History in more depth for a while now. I started working at a museum last year (in customer service) to give myself some idea of the museum world as (or art gallery/museum) is what I would eventually like to get into.

Would also like to pursue my visual art interests but can't find any succinct (ie: not longer than a year!) post grad courses that will qualify me to teach art. I have noticed one at COFA NSW that is a Masters in Art and Design Education but the course is all curriculum develelopment and theory - there's no skills/practical side of it (ie: drawing, sculpture, printmaking) so I'm going to start small and do a Certificate in Visual Art at TAFE this semester and see how I go from there...and then eventually I would like to somehow (:fingerscrossed: ) combine the Art studies and my History studies and end up in art galleries/museums/that sort of thing (I'm talking years and years from now)......phew!

Does that qualify me for the thread?

I am trying to get a late application sorted for TAFE just now and looking into fees (and whether I can afford them!) for a Masters mid-year...

And also looking for a part-time teaching job!

It's going to be a hectic year! :smiliedance:

Hi Hector

Welcome to the thread!

You will find that most postgrad courses available will be theory based as they assume that you will have achieved your practical visual art skills by this stage - I agree that Tafe would be an excellent option for you at this point.

If you are really keen to get into Museums/Art Galleries then I would recommend looking into Postgrad Museum Studies or Arts Management. Also get as much experience in Museums and Galleries (lots of volunteer options available) as possible as it is a really competitive industry but once you are in the door lots of options open up....It all depends on what area you want to work in (eg curator, collection management, education/visitor programs etc.)

I worked for a Gallery and a Museum for two years before I had my first baby. It was a really hard decision to leave but I chose to focus on being a mum for a while. Now it is two years down the track and I am getting itchy feet again:D I am tossing up about applying for a part time job at our local Museum but as Killian is only 4mths old I am not sure I am ready to put him in daycare (even for only two days per week). Plus if I am working I might not have the energy to study on top of that...... so confused!

 cool congrats on the high distiction:yelclap: look forward to comparing notes with you.

Hector- yes you can come in here we wont tell you to go away.:D

i am trying to figure out if i want to do a double major.if i pick religion studies i need to do 16 (or8 cant remember) griffith uni units to get my degree, but i am also leaning towardsLiterature and Composition Major , & Australian and the Asia-Pacific Region Major its sooo hard to choose lol.i am thinking i will do Literature coz i guess that would help if i want to be an english teacher one day.

Do you have to pick your second major straight away or is it something that you can pick later?

I don't think that my course allows a second major - maybe I should look into that.......

I am really hanging out to get my study resources but have to wait until the end of Feb....frustrating

jessgray

i think you can do both:D pick now or later
i should get my study materials soon, open uni normally makes sure you get them about 2 weeks before uni starts:smiliedance: but knowing my luck i will be waiting for them the day uni starts:laughing:

I don't really qualify either as I finished my Arts (Literature & Communications) years ago.

I know Arts is viewed as the 'soft' or 'easy' path, but as you know its more work than a lot of the others! I have an IT degree as well as that was light work, an Arts degree is hard work and requires actual intelligence and thought rather than parroting back a textbook.

My flatmates used to mock me, but whenever I asked them if they had read 5 books that week and critically analysed them all, they generally shut up. :)

So keep being interesting!
