hi guys

couple of Questions.

bub is 11weeks, im going to put him on bottle fulltime after heaps of trouble with breastfeeding.

1. how much water is he suppose to have???? tried to give him some today, not happy at all. he had formula - 60ml and it took ages for him to drink it. he was fussing like hell.

2. can bacteria grow in warm water???? can he have one sip and be able to offer it next time???? or does it have to be fresh.

3. when i heat up a bottle, i pour it into another bottle, the one that hasnt been drunk out of, is it okay to put in tha fridge???? even thou its been heated???

4. what kinda teats do you use??? i have been using the piogen one, thats like a nipple, i dont know if thast causing the slow feeding.

5. his poos are really thick and a wee bit stringy, i have been putting drops in his bottles to help him, just incase hes constipated.

6. if he falls asleep while drinking its soooo hard to burp him, any suggestions.

7. what kind of routine does everyone have??? we dont have one, he also wont have naps without being held :(

thanks ppls

As long as you follow the instruction from the formula tin you shouldnt worry about adding extra water intake.

I wouldnt put milk back in the fridge after being reheated if I were you

Try to burbs the bub now and then...so bub wont fall asleep...

We use Avent brand only including his microwave steriliser

I will get back to you when I remember more, and am sure there will be more helpful hints coming in :)

Hi Tamz,

I agree with Thomasmum, you shouldn't put milk back into the fridge after it's been heated. Try not to warm bottles until you're going to use them, and throw out any that's been warmed up but not drunk.

Fresh water - bub shouldn't need any if you're making formula up according to the directions or unless it's very very hot and he's sweating a lot.

Yes, bacteria can grow in water if bub has had a drink from it. Throw leftover water out and use a fresh bottle & fresh water every time.

It's normal for bub's poos to be different when you start formula, compared to breastfeeding. So long as he's pooing you shouldn't need to add drops or anything else to his formula. Poos could be every day, every few days, or only once a week. I'd try leaving the drops out and see how he goes.

I used Nuk or Tommee Tippee teats. Double check what size (flow rate) you're using. If you're still using the newborn size that might be why bub is being so slow to drink.

hi Tamz

Congratulations - my little girl is 11wks too :)

I too was breastfeeding but have changed to formula feed fulltime - to the annoyance of DH but hey I gave it a good 9wk shot of bf during day and bottle at night.

Hope I can help with some answers to your questions

1. how much water is he suppose to have???? tried to give him some today, not happy at all. he had formula - 60ml and it took ages for him to drink it. he was fussing like hell. Please read the tin and use exactly what it says - at the moment I am using Karicare HA AR formula and that's 150ml with 3 scoops - some other formulas will be the same or 50 mls more with extra scoop - just check

2. can bacteria grow in warm water???? can he have one sip and be able to offer it next time???? or does it have to be fresh. If he doesn't finish the bottle throw the rest out - I know it might be a waste but don't want ickys to grow in bottle. I know it says not to on the tin however I have done this with DDnumber1 and not probs - I make up about 4 bottles at a time then put in the back of the fridge.

3. when i heat up a bottle, i pour it into another bottle, the one that hasnt been drunk out of, is it okay to put in tha fridge???? even thou its been heated??? I use cool boiled water in the bottle I made formula in and when ready to use I microwave it warm for 30 seconds then shake and feed.

4. what kinda teats do you use??? i have been using the piogen one, thats like a nipple, i dont know if thast causing the slow feeding. I use the tommee tippee bottles and teats (when I bought the bottles these teats were already connected - I am using thicker formula and they work wonderfully so normal formula I would say would be fine - it's when they are 6mths I'd change teats. You can by the clear tommee tippee bottles from BigW in pack of 3 for about $15 I think (only bought them last week and I forget the price already). Feeding time generally takes about 5-10minutes unless she is more interested in looking at her daddy or sister.

5. his poos are really thick and a wee bit stringy, i have been putting drops in his bottles to help him, just incase hes constipated. Poos with bottle feed babies are greener and somewhat thicker not the yellow watery runny stuff that you'd be used to with bf. I'd say as long as he is not in pain and poos are not hard it would be no prob but maybe speak to MHN or GP if concerned.

6. if he falls asleep while drinking its soooo hard to burp him, any suggestions. Tickle foot or under chin to wake up a bit otherwise don't worry - both my DD's are not burpers so I don't worry - they fart it out eventually - but if there is medical reason why you have to burp bubs (vomitting issues or something) again see MHN or GP

7. what kind of routine does everyone have??? we dont have one, he also wont have naps without being held Routine - what's that ;) DD wont go to sleep during day in bassinette but will sleep anyway else - night no problems sleeps through. Have you been to a sleep clinic (IMO only - they are great - When I really need DD to sleep during day in bassinette I put her in and she will cry but most of the times settle after 30mins. PM if you want me to explain in detail what we do and did.

Other people may give you different advice and that's fine - take from this and others what is best for you and noone will be offended :)

If you want to chat more don't hesitate to pm as I know exactly (and so will others) what you are going through and especially at this stage of age :)

Good luck and you are doing great
