Does anyone in Birsbane know if you can get a nuchal fold scan bulk billed anywhere??

I rang up to book one today and they said it would cos $190!!! I nearly choked on the phone!

Even if anyone knows of a cheaper place it would be so so very appreciated!! I really want it done but don't know if DH will let me at that price!

 Hi,

Len from the August thread is going for one soon, but not sure where...Maybe you could ask her....I am still deciding if I want to get it done or not....I mean I am only 31 but it wouldn't change my mind about having the baby....

Kimee - I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think so. My GP said something about a recent change making the Medicare rebate for the nuchal scan higher if the woman is over 30, but other than that, not sure. Sorry, I realise this doesn't help.

apparently cleveland bulk bill

I don't know of any where that bulk bills if you have no real reason to have it done ie: no family history of abnormalities, not in the 'high risk age category'.

Anyone one who just simply 'wants' it is not covered, and there for have to pay the price.

ETA.. sorry just realised this is in the August 2007 section... sorry to but in ladies...

Thanks for all your responses!

Lunar - you're not butting in at all! I would love as many answers from everyone whos been there done that!

I rang up the ultrasound place to question them again and found out that I could get a rebate of $60 from the $190 cos I've had a previous miscarriage.

Mandi - where in Cleveland did you hear they bulk bill?? cos I live in Alex hills and that's really close

Kimee, I wouldn't worry because of your age but that is your choice. I am 35 now so in a new high risk group otherwise I wouldn't get it done. Mine yesterday cost $185 and they told me nothing. I will spew big time if I have to pay that amount again tomorrow.

With getting money back because of previous miscarriages etc how do they know? Like, on the medicare form it doesn't ask such things  Thats confidential medical info.

Kimee,

I just love your avatar. You and DH look gorgeous. I can't help but wonder if bubs will have curly hair or straight!

Wow...you've all quoted prices much cheaper than what mine was going to cost. I was told $300 by my Ob. We opted out as there's no point in paying so much money if we're not going to act on the results.

Sydney Ultrasound for Women - $265! Maybe I need to move to Bris-vegas!

Those prices are almost criminal!!! Call in the ACCC. That is so wrong.

Kimee
24-01-2007, 05:40 PM
OMG!! those prices are ridiculous! And I thought mine was over the top! $190 doesn't seem all that bad anymore...

I feel so behind from you girls cos I'm due at the end of the month! So many of you have reached 12 weeks and over already and here I am so proud of my first :barf: yesterday!!

Sandy - you're so lovely to say that about my lil ol avatar! :) Yeah I wonder wether bub will get curly or straight hair. My mum loves hubbys curls and said that if the baby has straight hair I should put it back!!!

I am in sydney and was quoted $225.00, then if you want to have a NT-Plus ( which is the blood test apparantly) an additional $95.00.

I, like you Kimee nearly choked aswell. And now especially when i read what the Brisbane prices are.

I also did not know that if you had a previous m/c or family history that you can get highter medicare coverage. Hmmm i think i will be calling them to see what discounts i can get.

Thanks very much Ladies.

Has anyone needed an Amnio yet?

I just had mine today at Qld Xray. It was $190, with a $60 medicare rebate because of my previous m/c.

Man I am so lucky. It was going to be $154 and $90 something back from Medicare but, it's long story, I used to work for a dentist who would refer patients for OPGs to this particular x-ray company, as I was staff of a referring Dr I was kindly bulk billed by them- their nice offer.

Anyway, last year when I had n/s with Hugh they asked if I still worked for Dr B- I said no, I work for another dentist now- and they still bulk billed me. Next time for the morphology scan they said do you still work for Dr B? I thought I told you no last time so stuff it- yes and I was bulk billed again.

This n/s they didn't ask me anything so at the end I went to pay and they gave me a postage paid envelope and said just to send in the Medicare cheque when I get it back! COOL!

And my blood test was bulk billed so it cost me nothing- except fuel and accommodation while in Adel.

Ive got my 12 week scan booked for this Friday at Sunnybank Womens Diagnostic Centre - and it's costing me $190. She told me that Medicare don't always give you a rebate - Not too sure what that meant. Guess I'll have to wait and find out....

Hi Hayley!

We're due on the same day!! You're lucky you're having yours so early! I'm not having mine til the 21st Feb we'll be just shy of 13 wks then. I chose that date cos it's my bday and it'll be a pressie for me! Also so I could get the day off work hehehe!

We are due on the same day. How cool is that! I booked my scan ages ago and at that stage I thought I was a little bit ahead of what I am... But I asked Dr and she said as long as it's done between 11 and 13 weeks, so I didn't bother changing it.. :)

Have you found or booked into a hospital yet??

Kimee
07-02-2007, 11:20 AM
I can't wait til my scan! Let me know how you go on Friday! I'm planning on going to the redlands public hospital and my dr said she will organise everything for me after my 12 week scan. Have you booked anywhere yet?

hayles07
07-02-2007, 11:39 AM
I've rung up Mater Mothers (Public)... I have to go in to the Doctor's on Monday to get my results, so I will get her to fax through a referral yet... I had no idea when it came to choosing a hospital, so hopefully I've chosen one thats ok! :)

Will definately let you know how my scan goes on Friday... Soo excited... Have you had an ultrasound yet, or will the 21st be your first one?

Kimee
07-02-2007, 12:01 PM
There is a thread on hospitals if you want info on mater hospital. I'm going to redlands cos it's about 5 minutes away from me.I've had 3 ultrasounds with this pregnancy! I had an early one at 6 weeks because of my last m/c and one at 8 and 10 wks because of spotting. It was just bub having fun trying to scare me! So the 12 wk will be my 4th! I've got a nice little timeline of pics going on there. But I love getting peeks! How many have you had?

hayles07
07-02-2007, 12:10 PM
Sorry to hear about your previous m/c... I've just had the one - At 6 and a half weeks (due to spotting)... Thankfully it proved to be nothing.. :) Can't wait for Friday as we are so excited about the scan, but scared at the same time incase something is wrong...

But it was the most amazing thing seeing bub for the first time with its tiny heartbeat.. lol....

Kimee
07-02-2007, 12:15 PM
I know what you mean! I felt like doing cartwheels when I saw that lil heart flickering away. Its scary when you have to wait so long between scans but think of how amazing it'll be on friday to see how much growing ur bub has done!

My partner will be with me again this time but my mum also wants to come because she missed out on seeing the last scan... :) Lots to look forward to....

Any idea what you are having yet? I really don't have any idea, as long as it's healthy.... But everyone and I mean everyone I speak to is convinced I'm having a girl.... Will have to wait until 20 week scan to find that one out... Ive been thinking a lot about names lately - Now, that's hard work!!

Hi Kimee,

Just thought I'd let you know that I had my Nuchal Scan today and it went extremely well... Bub was so active, everyone was commenting.. Throwing his hands and feet in the air and putting on a show for me - Doing somersaults... It was soo amazing to see! I commented how its a shame we couldn't tell what it is yet and the lady doing the scan went on to tell me that she is pretty sure it's a BOY! :) How exciting.. We will confirm it at the next scan though - Between 18 and 20 weeks... My results came back as - 1:20500... Extremely low! Thank god for that... Anyway, hope your scan goes well!

Hayley

That's fantastic Hayley!

Ur bub sounds so cute putting on such a show!
Great results too! How long did it take for them to give you that ratio? A boy 4u!! how exciting! It'd be interesting to see if shes right when you have your next scan. I think I'm gona ask my sonographer to take a guess at the sex just for fun! Can't wait for it now! I'm heading off to have my bloods done next Saturday.

hayles07
10-02-2007, 05:57 PM
Well, it will be quite interesting to see if she was right about the sex, but she was pretty confident it was a boy lol.. I guess she could see his "bits"... It didn't take too long to get the results... My scan was at 12:45 and I think I was given the results by 1:30... It was quite quick - I went in and they showed me a graph and the results etc on a computer.. Then I had to wait for the scan (the pics are soo cute by the way)... I was out of there by 2:15 so I was quite impressed.. It did take a while to do the ultrasound though as the first girl I had was a little inexperienced I think and because he was so lively she couldnt keep him still to get the measurements... I have a doctors appointment Monday - I'll get my blood test results for everything else I was tested for... So, so far so good... Can't wait until the next scan! :)

Good luck with your blood tests - You'll be fine! And I bet you just can't wait to have your scan done now... My Partner and Mum just couldn't believe how lively he was... Still excited.. :)

Anyway, good luck with yours - You'll be fine but make sure you let me know how it goes...

Hi I had mine at Mt Ommaney too and they are great there (and a specialist centre and usually easy to get into without a huge wait like the other places). You can pick up the results the same day usually too.

Hi pixeleyes!

Hi Kimee

Yup you sure do! We didn't even have to ask. The images on the scan screen were much clearer than the ones we took home tho so maybe when you see a good one you could say "Gee wouldn't that be a great shot to take home" hehe. I doubt cost has anything to do with the level of service there - my doc was pleased when I told her I was going there as she said they were really good also. I've had scans by one guy and two women there and they've all been fantastic. Not afraid to answer questions and I've alays felt excited and reassured when I leave.

I get the feeling even if we didn't get good news they would handle our concerns really well.

Cheers

Hi Everyone

I am on the Gold Coast and had my NT scan last Thursday.

From my information the cost was $133.30 and we got $61 back from medicare.

That is via south coast radiology.

I can not believe some of the exorbenent prices you have been charged.

My sister is 24 and she had to pay $120 and got nothing back from medicare as she wasnt at risk.

Cheers Jac
