My dd stayed over at a friends place last saturday night while we went to a wedding reception. She had been flower girl and was pretty tired by the end of it, so we let her go to the reception for a short while and then took her to stay the night with her "aunty and uncle" (fantastic friends!).

The next morning, when I went to pick her up, they told me that she had a sore foot because the kids had been jumping on an innerspring mattress from a sofa bed which they had used for my kids overnight (on the floor of thier friends room) and a spring had come through and pierced her foot.

We took her to see a friend who is a doctor and he said the wound looked pretty clean so only to worry about it if it started to fester in the next day or two. It was fine for a few days so we stopped looking at it.

Tonight (sunday), we noticed she was walking a bit funny and when we looked at her foot, it was all abcessed and a bright red line was heading up her leg:eek:

I have just spent 6 ½ hours at the hospital with her - she had laughing gas and a local to clean the wound and they found parts of the spring and some fabric from the mattress still in there. The doc wasn't too sure if he got it all, so if it starts to fester again, she will need to be put under and have it opened up even more as pieces of the spring may have travelled!

My poor little girl (5yo) was so incredibly brave, only crying when the local was administered - it was nearly 2am by the time we left the hospital and by then I don't think it was pain making her whimper, more likely tiredness.

So ... I know it is for a very minor thing compared to a lot of kids on here, but I don't like the idea of her having to have more done to her foot - please pray it heals quickly and cleanly!

That dosnt sound like a very nice thing to go through at all. What a brave little girl, especially putting up with the pain of her foot. Lucky you found it before it got to much worse.

:fingerscrossed: She heals well and dosnt need any more surgery.

:hugs: to you and your little girl, i know how you feel at the moment, my little DD (18 months) has to have an operation in march, only a small op but hey! they are our litttle girls and anything that we are not in control of IS a big deal.
i had the same thing happen to me when i was little, juping up and down on mum and dads bed, the spring busted out and into my foot, the spring went straigt through and out the other side, i remember dad had to cut the sping from from under my foot because he didnt want to pull it out, off to the hospital i went, i had a small op to get it out, only because their was a kink in the wire and they could not pull it out properly. it was a huge deal to mum and dad, i now realise it is normal to be protective of your child and worry yourself to death for them,
p.s i didnt learn my leason i did it on a neighbours bed about 4 months later but this time scratched my foot and only had stiches:laughing:

Thanks to you all for your caring replies ...

She is walking extremely well on it and I am having trouble getting her to slow down. The doctors were really shocked that she was still running and jumping on it before the procedure and it doesn't look like it is going to slow her down at all. I have been advised to keep her off it for a few days, but when she ran out of the hospital the other night, I knew I had my work cut out - lol!

It looks pretty clean atm and she is being really good about taking the antibiotics, so hopefully we won't have to go back. She has to go to the doc on thursday to get swab results etc so we will know more then.

Doc's appointment has been bumped to Monday midday, so I guess we will just keep a close eye on her.

It looked pretty good when I changed her dressing tonight - still can't get her to slow down so she must be ok!

Well, went to the doc today and he said the results came back that there were 2 nasty bugs grown from the swabs taken and fortunately they should both react well to the anti-biotics.

The wound is looking pretty good, but is still a bit white around the cut ... he said to leave it a few days and if it got worse, he would arrange an ultrasound before commiting to any surgery. It may still have something in there, but he wants to make sure of that as another course of anti-biotics might just do the trick!

As for my beautiful dd - she is really just sick of the fuss as she feels perfectly fine and hasn't skipped a beat in the past week!
