$$$ wise it is cheaper to sterilize a male kitten. But other then that there is no difference really.

Personally i would say female.
Yes more exxy to desex but over all their temperament is easy going etc.
With males & not all of course but they can become obsessed with their owners. My mums cat did & it got to the point she had to rehome him because he would attack me all the time if i went near her & he would even attack her if she didnt do what he wanted.
As i said not all males are like this because my girl's first born was a boy & we kept him. Seriously he was a gorgeous cat very sooky & loving but still protective over me to the point he would try to spray DP's stuff LOL !
But also be aware girls can spray too
But i would also suggest going & viewing a litter then choosing the one who the kids get along with the best & that you like also.
Good luck !

Much as I love my 2 big sooky male cats, I would never have males again. I have had 4 females before.
The boys have had heaps of urinary tract problems and one of them was a cryptorchid which means one of his testes was inside the pelvis, so it cost us heaps to get him desexed properly.
We have also had problems with spraying (even though they were neutered) and fighting. This meant that they had to have a course of hormone injections to calm them down.
Overall, we would have spent $4000 on them in 7 years :( They have only just settled down now :fingerscrossed:

Wow HelsBels - that's some bad luck you've had with your boys. My boy thinks he's human, and he has never sprayed. Weird. I have spent a lot of $$ on him but that has been from him getting hurt when a kid kicked him, and a cple of abcesses from grass seeds and next doors un-nuetered cat having a go at him. (we know Nugget didn't fight back cos the wound was on his butt LOL)
He isn't overprotective of me at all, but I have had a female that was. I think it's all luck of the draw really - a lot like people.

My precious cat is a boy. He's nearly 10 now and has never been much of a problem, never sprayed in the house etc.
He's a burmese and he loves everybody but is a mummy's boy under it all! That just means he'll hop off the couch with DH when I sit down to come and sit with me, nothing nasty!
There's probably good and bad with both sexes, so I'd agree with just choosing the kitten you love! I've always had a name in mind before the actual animal came along, so that determined the sex I've chosen!

If you get female then you wont ever have to worry about them spraying.
My first and much beloved cat was a boy and he did spray occasionally even though he was neutured. He was very posessive as well and would get very jealous of my boyfriends, and used to hiss at DH when I wasnt around, never really accepted he wasnt No 1 male anymore I think!
Having said that the two we have now are pretty good, although the male (just turned 1) has a habit of scratching the furniture no matter what we do but on the other hand he's much more loving and affectionate than our female cat.
If you do get a male it's worth ringing your local shire as I know ours gave us a voucher to help pay for the neuturing.
As long as you get them desexed young it doesn't matter. I have a male cat that was desexed very young at the RSPCA (about 7 weeks or so) and he has never spayed the house and he is the most gentlest loving cat ever!

As i said in my previous post girl cats can & do spray.
My current girl would spray when she was in heat was horrible ! And my first cat should would do it out of spite cause she hated going outside but my dad wouldnt hear of her staying inside when no-one was home. Anyways she would go along my mums curtains & spray.

My female cat, Muffy, is spade and she still sprays. But she only does it out of revenge or spite.

Yeah females do spray... been there delt with that!
I have three boys.... after having girls and boys, IMO the boys are more affectionate... I also have burmese and they are all mummy's boys!! Almost human they are

I've had males and females, all have been sooky as hell, friendly, no spraying (its males who spray btw, if not desexed at an early age). I personally dont think sex has to do with it, its the genetic make up and personality that makes a great cat.. i guess im lucky and have a knack of being able to pick good cats.
You have to watch em for a while before choosing which to buy, suss out if they are shy, timid, aggressive etc.

 I agree with this. I adopted my 2 from the AWL and I let them come to me, so they chose me and not the other way around lol.
Despite all the health issues that I already mentioned, personality wise they are so loving and gorgeous but not too needy as they have each other. They live out in a cat run most of the time too. Here's a photo :p

Again i say girls as well as boys can spray ive had two that have done it & as other members have said they have also encountered it. You can also read about it as there is lots about the idea only males spray & because they havent been desexed early enough. All of that is untrue !
