View Full Version : Co-sleeping & Rolling

Hi all
I co-sleep on a part time basis with DD, now 4.5 months.
Some nights she goes into her cot then comes into the spare bed with me around 4am, other nights we just start off in the spare bed. DH stays in "our" bed, so it's just DD and I.
The spare bed's a queen sized, slat based bed (no doonas, etc).
At the moment it's fine - I put DD in the middle and I flip sides as required for boobie access.
But what happens when she starts rolling (and crawling)??
Does bub have a tendency to roll/crawl out of bed? If so what's the solution??
TIA
Debbie

I've co-slept with my boy full-time since he was born. He started rolling at around 5-ish months old.
I have a side-car set up, where one side of the cot has been taken off completely, and my bed is pushed right up against the cot. So the cot part is "his bed" and when he falls asleep at bedtime, I put him in there. Then when I go to bed, I wake him and give him a dreamfeed. Then he'll either snuggle up with me or I put him back in "his bed". I don't think I'm a particularly light sleeper - but I find that him moving around wakes me up. And now that he crawls a lot, he will clamber over me in the morning to get to his sister (she's been sleeping in with us during the holidays) so that definitely wakes me up
Some great advice I was given is to put a "fence" up around the edge of the bed - put pillows/cushions/etc underneath the fitted sheet, and it just provides that bit of a fence for them. If you have a body pillow, this is perfect for that.

I dont really want to admit this but i will so u know to be careful!
I co sleep with my boym Last night I i rolled over and I put him on the outside i normally cuddle up with him but it was soo hot last night so i didnt. And he rolle off the bed He didnt hurt himself because luckly the blanket had fallen off during the night and was on the floor. But it scared the hell out of all three of us, I WONT be doing it again thats for sure!
Oh And that makes me a Bad Mother According to my brother who is childless

Aaah childless people - doncha just love 'em
That's why I love the side-car setup. Especially in this weather.
And while we're sharing I'm-a-bad-mum-co-sleeping stories ... My boy crawled off my bed headfirst a few weeks ago. He'd only just started crawling, I didn't think he was too fast, we'd come home and he was asleep in the car, so I gently took him out and put him into "his bed", and he was asleep. Then went back outside to get the shopping, just as I come back inside I hear him awake so I go into the bedroom and see him nosedive off the bed :( Luckily I'm a slob and there was a huge pile of clothes there :D But yeah, since then I have a cot mattress on the floor for day sleeps.
And that's another option for co-sleeping, a mattress on the floor, some people will put a Queensize mattress then a single mattress next to it.

we co-sleep with ds1 he wont have a bar of his bassinette. dp is very scared of roling on ds2 when i get out of bed co in the morning i try to leave ds2 sleeping for a bit longer but i do go check on them:yes: its pretty funny atm ds2 has my side of the bed and dp is all the way on the other side:laughing: we have a double
ds1 sleeps in a cot coz he thinks he is too big to cuddle up to mummy and daddy:crying:  my ds2 is only 3 months and he has just started attempting to roll but hasnt quite mastered rolling yet.
my dd has fallen out lots when she was a bub...tell ya what u can do...get a bed rail and attatch it to the side bub is on least then they cant fall out:thumbsup:
I sleep with cobes between chris and I.. but when either chris isn't in bed yet or I get out of bed and Cobey's still asleep (rare few, like today) I just line the empty side with pillows.
If he starts reverse-cycle feeding when I go to work, I'm going to get a bed rail.

Thanks everyone
I think I'll pass on keeping a large pile of laundry next to the bed as a landing pad, so it looks like I'll either be dismantling the bed for the duration (the in-laws will love it when they come to stay!) or getting some bed rails.
Either that or DD will magically start sleeping through again in her cot (she slept midnight - 7am for a few weeks there, I thought I had it made!).

I just either pop two pillows (long ways) down the side of the bed, or a body pillow. No probs here!!! And she has started commando crawling... when she wakes up, she normally rolls over to me for 'face nuzzling' so she wakes me up anyway!!!
