I have my sister here at the moment, and she is all scared about ivf and everything like that, and has been asking me a million questions, i just don't know the answers to, so i thought of you brillant bub hub girls, for some help!!

She would like to know...

When they inject for ivf? Do they numb you or put you to sleep???

Im not sure if that makes sense... i don't know alot about it myself..

Hi Damiens mum,

If your sister means egg retrieval and embryo transfer, then,

For the egg retrieval, some people like to be put asleep but in my clinic they just give you a sedative to relax.Local anaesthetic is used so you dont feel them collecting the eggs.

As for the embryo transfer, you are awake and it is a simple, quick procedure that doesnt hurt.It is a bit like a pap smear. No sedation is used where I go.

IVF seems scary when you havent been through it but I was suprised at how once you got into it, then it wasnt so scary. Your sister is only scared of the unknown, and that is completely normal.

Another suggestion is to look up one of the IVF clinics sites ( eg Sydney IVF, IVF Australia, Melbourne IVF) and they give you a lot of info on those sites.

Wishing your sister the best of luck if she undertakes IVF.
