View Full Version : Will cloth nappies help?

DS is seven months old and has developed sores on his hip bones and on his tummy where the bands of the disposable nappy are. I've tried Bepanthan, Sudocream and Curash powder, but they're still there and getting worse. I think it's the binding pressure of the nappies.
Would cloth nappies help? I tried to use a terry flat, but am hopeless. It was so saggy and fell down to his ankles. Should I invest in some other (more sophisticated) cloth nappies, or is the rash just something I have to live with?? It's not on any other part of him - just his hips and tum.
Thanks cloth mamas!

you could try a few fitteds if you are having trouble with the flats.
i havn't had problems with rashes on my dd so i can't help much.
try a few different types of mcn to see whcih ones work better for you or maybe a cloth user near you can visit and show you the best way to put on a terry flat. (it gets easier with practice)

Maybe the disposable is irratating his skin.
Has a nurse or doctor seen the rash?
I dont know if cloth will fix the problem.
Do you have anyone that can show you how to use a terry?
If so you could try it for a week and see if it helps.

I would try some MCN(modern cloth nappies) you will find that they wont bub anywhere near as much as a disposable,
If I put skyla in sposies for even just an hour she gets the same sores- its from everything rubbing:(
So if you switch to MCN not only will your little one be more coumfertable but you will be helping WAHM's and the environment:yelclap:
My DD started to develop this horrible itchy red sore/rash on her hip which got worse no matter how much paw paw ointment I put on it and loads of nappy free time...
Then she broke out in what I thought was heat rash, but it looked like she was on the verge of full blown eczema  I freaked out because I've had to do wet dressings on bubbas before and they're not easy!!! Anyway, within three days of using fulltime cloth the all over body rash had gone and within two weeks the horrible sores had cleared up :smiliedance:
It might help! But you will probably really only see any significant difference if you go fulltime with the cloth, because even though you may use cloth during the day they're still in plastic sposies for 10-12 hours overnight... :hugs: for you. It can be such a worry, but ask anything you like, we're a helpful bunch!
ETA: Egads, I sounded a bit full on then sorry! Don't feel overwhelmed by the idea and do it in as many baby steps as you need to, if cloth is what you choose! We did cloth during the day and going out for two weeks before I mustered up the courage to try one overnight :-)

My DD gets this and I've been told to keep it moist with sorbolene. Nappy rash creams will dry it out and worsen the problem. Maybe try and not do the nappy up too tightly either.

I would say it's definitely worth giving reusable nappies a go. The old square terry flats, there is a website somewhere with heaps of different folds and detailed instructions. I'll try to dig it up for you.
I think flats would be best in your situation, with a nice big fold so it isn't digging in anywhere. You could boost it with hemp or bamboo to make it more absorbent. And a woollen cover with a gentle tie (instead of elastic).

i second what everyone else has said.
for now though, nappy free time nappy free time nappy free time.
i've found, whenever bubs bum is looking even a LITTLE bit red, nappy free time really helps alot. more than creams and curash (sometimes you obviously have to use both too - nft and creams/curash).
but for whatever reason, exposure to the air really helps.
lay down some towels and go with it

great minds :)
The_Queen mentioned this site for nappy folds. I can't remember who orginally posted it, but it's great! I have it bookmarked

My DS has always had terrible nappy rash, sensitive skin, and always itchy and rashy. That is until I switched to cloth. Took me two years, but I didn't know any better. Cloth should really help your little boy, and MCN are soooo easy once you get the hang of it

Cloth with woolen soakers and nappy free time! If we use just fitteds or flats with a woolen soaker we have no rashes here! Soakers breathe so much better than any other cover. I was dubious about it, but gave it a go anyway and we have not looked back! Baby Beehinds Bamboo with a knitted wool soaker for night is perfect for us too. Not one leak the whole time we have been using them for nights. Sposies leak overnight though!

Thanks for your responses everyone! I've pretty much decided to give cloth a go, but my only concern is that he may get nappy rash of a different kind. Are MCNs absorbant enough to keep the wee away from his skin? He has pretty sensitive skin, so I have to be careful.
Thanks!!
You can try stay dry fabrics near the skin which will draw the moisture from the skin. This may help.
yep use microfleece liners:thumbsup:
we shall talk cloth at the meet next week, yes? Ohhh exciting! Also put some honey on nappy rash or a camomile tea bag in his bath water can also help.

Ariene's horiffic nappy rash (she'd had it since birth) was our main reason for switching to mcn.
It sorted her out instantly, I pretty much wept with relief- she had been sore and tender for months.
I think that it's the modern fabrics mcn's use- gone are the days when you have bub's bum sitting on wet cotton. Well, you can if you and bub are fine with it, but there's more choice now. Ariene's nappies usually have an inner made from suedecloth, fleece or sherpa and these fabrics 'wick' away any mositure, taking it off the skin and storing it in the absorbant layer. The absorbant layers in the nappies we have are mainly hemp and bamboo. They are so absorbant that not much is needed- so as a bonus, a lot of mcn's are very trim.
For our fitted nappies (Baby Beehinds in bamboo) I add a fleece liner cut from cheap fleece you can get at Spotlight. This totally does the job.
Liners made from raw silk are sold at a few places (off the top of my head, I think The Wee Wuns do) and apparently they are amazing. They have built-in, natural healing properties and help fix up the skin just by sitting against it.
Good luck!!

Go the fleece liners! Nothing better to keep bubs bum dry. Very keen to try the raw silk liners too.... lol- the next purchase after paying for the new soaker I won off ebay this morning!
My daugther suffers severe ezcema and as soon as a disposable is put on her she flares up! I switched to cloth when she was 3 months old and have had the odd sposie on but when she does her skin suffers straight away...it's worth a shot!
