Im interested in making some of my own, but I have no idea what to use.

I also dont have an overlocker, will this be an issue?

Fabrics which dont fray do not need to be edged. Raw edges of flannelette or those fabrics that fray can be zigzagged on an ordinary machine.Any absorbent fabric works for inserts ,bamboo, hemp, terry, flannelette. You can cut up old shirts, use tea towels and face washers, recycle old towels that have gone thin.
Some people use microfibre like the cleaning cloths you buy in the supermarket; I personally don't like it and would put it last on my list but other people are happy with it.

i have made all (but one) of my inserts, don't have an overlocker.
i make them with 33cm x 33cm squares, two sewn together on one edge so they're together to fold when you put them in your pockets but they are one layer so they dry fast. (so the finished product is 33cm x 66cm IYKWIM)

i normally do one layer hemp, one layer microfibre. i've found this to be the trimmest combo.

have also used towels etc but those inserts are bulkier than the other ones.

people i know also use burley knit terry (bkt).

i just do a pretend overlocking stitch on my sewing machine - look on the machine or in the manual, there should be one that looks like little diamonds

either one (along the edge of the fabric) will stop fraying.

I can vouch for hemp & microfibre trifolds working really well - I have one of these that goes with my Bubba J/Cauldron night pocket fitted nappy. But anything absorbent will work: which means anything made out of cotton, bamboo, hemp and/or microfibre. Cotton will be less trim than the other three, but tends to be less expensive. You can even add a washcloth or whatever else comes to hand to boost your stuffing.

We mostly stuff pockets just with terries and/or infant prefolds, but we've also used purpose-made hemp stuffers and the above hemp & microfibre stuffer. So long as it fits the pocket nappy well and is absorbent, it should work. A folded square is great because the fold can be adjusted to fit just right, and as mama anne mentioned they can be folded out to rinse clean and dry fast.

Hemp works really really well, and it doesn't matter if it's jersey or terry, they both work well. Bubba Earth has some at the moment.

My machine has an overlocking stitch, but you can also use a zig zag

I just cut my yard or metre piece into 8 squares, put two together at a time and sew around the edges, then straight stich two lines to devide the square into three. Then I fold it into 3 so you can see the lines going through it IYKWIM
