View Full Version : More "Solid" Solids

I really need some advice in how / if to increase the "solidness" (if you know what I mean) of food for my 9 month old.

He has always been a great eater of any fruit / veg / meat etc that I have been giving him since 6 months old. The only problem is that every time I chop something a little rougher he will just spit it out, when food is a very smooth consistency he readily eats it all.

My greatest worry is bread / toast. He loves vegemite on wholemeal toast after his rice cereal, but he almost chokes nearly every day and I am a nervous wreck. This morning he was trying to eat a small piece and ended up throwing up toast & cereal - a truly gross combination!

If he is just not ready, I don't have a problem with it, but do I need to be doing something to help get him to the next stage?

Thanks for your help!
Michelle

my 7 month old son loves toast and sandwiches but the first few times he had it he chocked... he was sitting in his highchair so i started sitting him on my lap and he was fine... then i put him on the floor and now after a few weeks i have put him back into his highchair and he is aok...
hope this helps a bit...

Thanks for the suggestion Cobysmum!

I tried him on my lap this morning and he ate about half a piece of toast with no gagging etc. He must wonder why I am staring at him so intently!

I was totally freaked out yesterday, but a new idea, new day etc has made all the difference.

Thanks again,
Michelle

Hey Michelle,

I had the exact same prob with my son (he's now 11mths). He always gagged on his toast, i ended up having to just break bits off for him and feed to him like that. He used to hold it but he'd be silly with it.
Don't you hate the vomiting??? I'm not good with vomit at all lol
Also i find if you squish the bread a bit it's softer and they can eat it a bit easier.

Have you tried Arnotts Arrowroot biscuits?? They're good because they go soft with them such=king on it, but you just have to watch how much they bite off lol.

Hi Nat,

Yes we have had good success with the Arrowroots! I also tried a crusket yesterday afternoon and it went down very well.

I guess I should enjoy this time when I am still feeding him because there is so much mess now, I can't imagine what it will be like when he is feeding himself!!!

Hey M

Peters hit the stage of wanting to feed himself, my god, i never knew what mess was until he began feeding his sandwich himself lol...he takes so long though, so sometimes i just take it off him and break it into bits and feed it to him lol.

Yes Arrowroots are great...love them myself aswell! :p

I love my photo too lol!

Hope you're all well!
