My bub has silent reflux and the doctor has prescribed Zantac twice daily. I started him on it today but have been using Karicare thickener and have had pretty good results with it. Not enough to stop the screaming but it seems to make feeding a lot easier on him! Can I still use thickened formula or is this a no-no? The doctor and pharmacist seemed quite vague about it. Your advice is appreciated.

Hi Jeffy,
I hope the use of Zantac helps and you notice your son feels more comfortable. Just checking that the doctor let you know that Zantac is a weight related medication- and often it will need to be increased in line with any weight gain. If you notice he has been doing okay but starts to be more uncomfortable again, it may be worth considering.

As far as I know, it is fine to use Karicare food thickener with Zantac. We have families in our group who also use both, so I imagine it is okay. I know that you shouldn’t use a thickener with Infant Gaviscon, but have never heard about any restrictions with using Zantac. In order to have peace of mind though, it may be worth contacting the Medicines Line on 1300 888 763. They provide independent pharmaceutical advice between the hours of 9am and 6pm Monday to Friday (EST) and I’m sure you would be able to get advice about that.

I hope that helps.
