I am looking at making some nappies (will save money and the earth) Now I have found a pattern on the net, but what is the difference with fitted and pocket nappies????

Do you have to use PUL? ( I don't know where to get it)

How many would I need for a 1yr old???

I am sure I have many more questions just can't think of them right now.

A fitted has sewn in layers in the wet zone and may come with snap-in soakers/boosters or not.
Whereas a pocket nappy is just the outer shell of the nappy. It does not have any layers sewn in because you have to stuff an absorbant layer into the pocket. Does that make sense?

You don't have to use PUL, but for pocket nappies it's the most popular. You can use high quality fleece (Malden Mills) but you have to make sure it's (I think) 200wt and over for the wee to not just run through it.

There's a HUGE range of nappy making materials at Nappies Covered (either google it or PM me for the link) and you can buy PUL on there too.

As for how many...depends on how often you want to wash. If you wash everyday you could get away with 6 - 8? Always make sure though if you've got under 10 nappies, you always have terry towelling ones as backup for when the others are in the wash, gastro, can't be bothered :D , etc.

But there's plenty of other ladies on here that know MUCH more about making nappies than I do...LittleToad, Lunar, wanna step in here?

From the instructions that I have found to me it looks like the fitted ones would be easier to make. The pocket instructions don't seem to be in much detail or maybe it's just me.

Oh thats what I was going to ask whats better fitted or pocket???

I think that really is a personal preferene thing :) I prefer fitteds, but many people here love pockets. I think pockets would be easier to make though :)

 for fitteds. I love my fitted nappies! I only buy special/show-off pocket nappies because I find them a pain to stuff, but they are VERY popular. So maybe make a couple in each type and see which you prefer before making a bulk lot?

hey:wave:
I can make them:yes: I make fitteds i dont really like pockets...I make fitteds from flannel & hemp & fleece against bub for the actual nappy, and a fold out booster of layers of hemp with fleece on top to draw moisture away...Its only gonna cost me about $11 to make a nappy thats 1 size:thumbsup:

I got my materials from bubbaearth
nappiescovered has some great stuff too

feel free to ask anything else

Ok, I REALLY don't belong here cos I'm too lazy to sew my own nappies :o BUT can i say that APPLIX style hook/loop tape stuff is GREAT and is really worth buying instead of velcro.. in terms of durability, it doesn't curl, stronger grip, etc. And a great cover is essential- don;t make a beautiful, gorgeous nappy and then use a cheap pilcher. A quality wool, fleece or PUL wrap or cover is essential to 'hug' the nappy and prevent leaks IMO. That's all!! You can tell me to shut up now, lol.

the wee wuns sell Malden Mills fleece. 300 wt is the best, 200 wt you need an extra strip in the wet zone
