My mum came around this morning & told me my cousin HAS to give up b/f her 5wk bub as she has mastitis( ) She had it about 2weeks ago & got antibiotics to clear it up but it apprantly returned on sunday - they went to a local doctors surgery (VERY shoddy) where the doctor told her she must not b/f anymore beacuse the mastitis is poison & will give bub thrush. I dont know but i have always been told (by obs & chn) that if/when i get mastists FEED FEED FEED from the sore breast to help with the blockage (mind i've never had it so bad that i've needed antibiotics). I have always thought that it would make it worse to just stop feeding straight away as your milk is still producing & not being released hence having a major build up. Also cant thrush be treated anyway IF bubs got it? I was wondering if anyone out there has had the same problem & what happened to you.

No advice here sorry, I've been lucky to have never had that problem but like you I thought the "cure" was to feed as much as possible, even express if you have to in between to clear the ducts.

I'd be calling hospital midwives & asking them if I was her.

You are absolutely right, mygirls. Get her to call ABA immediately. It is a free 24hour counselling service - I'm not sure what state you are in, but the QLD no. is 07 3844 8977, I'm sure they can redirect you. There is still time for her to salvage her breastfeeding relationship. I've had mastitis twice, and it wasn't very nice, but with antibiotics, rest and lots of feeds, I got through it and am still breastfeeding.

It makes me so sad and very angry that there is so much misinformation out there, and that GP's are the ones spreading it.

I have had mastitis, I actually fainted when I went to my GP to check it out and had to be given a shot of pethadine. I was very sick with it but I was told to FEED FEED FEED and I was able to fight off the infection and continue bf. Its a horrible thing to go through, especially if you get a bad case. I hope your cousin gets the CORRECT information and gets better soon.

Ohh I'm sooo mad

What an ignorant SOB doctor. This decision is critical both to the health of the baby and (more importantly, I think) the MENTAL health of the mother. How could that doctor be so stupid and ignorant. I think that he(she?) should be reported to the AMA.

Mastitis milk can look a bit different, but it is FINE for baby. It WILL NOT give the baby thrush. I had mastitis with DD2 and feeding HELPS to remove the blockages. Please call her STRAIGHT AWAY and tell her to contact someone who knows and to report that STUPID doctor (and get her money back!!).

Cheers

Never had mastitis myself but I went to a lactation day stay and there was a lady there who had just been given antibiotics.. The lactation consultants spent the day with her helping her feed and expressing milk in between feeds as well to unblock the infection...

I can't believe there are doctors out there that don't know what they are talking about when it comes to breastfeeding, especially when it is the best food for a baby....

I would be reporting him to the ABA as well...

Forget the ABA, I would be reporting him to the AMA - the Medical boards etc - his advice sounds just downright negligent to me!

Yep, for anyone who misread (we've SO many acronyms on this site :D ) Report him to the Aust Medical Assn - he needs a bit of discipline (smack around the ears).

i had mastitis with my first child, shes now 2, and am breastfeeding my 2nd child with no worries. absolutly breastfeed through the mastitis!! its painful but in the long term, it will clear up (i took antibiotics) and stay positive! ;)

I am currently enduring my second bout of mastitis in a month.....I am still breastfeeding as much as I can! I was told to feed as much as possible and its the only thing that really helps. I can't believe that anyone should suggest that it should stop!?

Ok I'm one of the mums who stopped, but not because some poxy doctor told me too, I have a great GP who gave the pro's and cons and decided myself. I had a severe case of mastitis for 5weeks straight and 4 courses of antibiotics plus a shot in the leg ouch, with no cure at all I'm afraid. I had it the minute my milk came in (when DS was two days old) and I expressed everywaking moment that I wasn't BF. It was exruciating, not to mention the delerium of a 40degree fever for a week!!
But anyway if she feels in herself that she would like to give up BF because it's too much for her then that decision should be respected and not questioned as she will be finding it hard enough to deal with as it is (I know the guilt of giving up BF was very difficult for me), but she shouldnt feel as though she has to give it up because the doc told her it was the only option that is absurd!

The baby may get thrush, but not from the mastitis itself, it would be from the anitbiotics. There are treaments for thrush and babies get thrush other ways too. Not a good reason to stop BF!

Yep! Once again a trusted health professional giving out completely incorrect and DANGEROUS advice.

The WORST thing one can do in the case of mastitis is to wean suddenly - it can only lead to more problems eg. an ABSCESS!!!!

... 'Poison' ?????? pphhhh!! what a load o' ......
