View Full Version : bubs with a cold
Hi all.
Just wanting to hear from other mums whose bubs have colds!! It's not a serious issue I know but cold time can be very frustrating! Bubs sleeps well overnight still (thank goodness!) but the day times are sooooo exhausting as bubs just doesn't want to be put down because he's all snotty and grizzly (despite medicine that doesn't seem to work...!)
Oh well.
Just wanted to hear from other mums who are going through the millionth cold with their bubs and how you are all coping and what you are doing to keep little one entertained!!
Myself and the two boys have that awful tummy virus that's been going around. Luckily I got it far worse than the boys did, while I've been sick since Monday night the boys both only started last night and neither have been sick today. Though their both very clingy. They're both wiped out from being sick and lack of sleep, so they're both sleeping at the moment.
I just hope DH doesn't get it too. Fingers crossed. :o
Sorry to hear that your bubba is not well, hope he gets better soon :)
The only thing, other than being held all day, that would keep my DS happy when he was not well was to be in his bouncer/rocker so he was sitting up a bit...and to be where he could see me all the time. He would even sleep there thru the day when he was really stuffy.
What medicine are you using? I have always had to alternate between Demazin and Dimetapp coz whatever I used on one cold usually didn't work the next time he was sick enough to need it.
Yeah I'm using Dimetap.
It's great fun at the moment. DS has always been a really big chucker (reflux that luckily doesn't cause him pain!) but with the extra mucous he's extra chucky... it's lovely (i've changed my clothes and his twice already today!)
He's sleeping now finally (put him to sleep on the bottle - poor little thing) so i'll race around now and try and get a few things done - brekky dishes still in the sink, haven't done my hair... :)))) reminder of those first wonderful weeks of his life...
Of course, if I weren't on BubHub i'd get waaaay more done!! Oh well... ;-)

Hi Aleksander's Mum
This may sound pretty gross...but here goes anyway....
When Ben has a cold, I find that his little nose gets so full of snot and congestion....anyway, the chemist gave us this thing (not sure what it's real name is) but we call it the snot sucker!! Classy hey!!
Anyway, you pop it just inside the nose and it sucks out any mucus and helps the little bubbas breath better ...I think it's called an aspirator??
Anyway, just my tip for bubbas with colds...
Cheers
my baby has a cold at the moment... ok so he is 3 but he is still my baby... i hate when they get colds in the hot weather because you cant use the airconditioning it makes their noses run even more and cant have a fan on at night which i think is the reason he got the cold in the first place.... i have no idea... ohh well.... the thing that anoys me the most is all the SNOT ! every sneeze produces a whole river of snot ! he comes running into the room with snot all over his face and down his shirt laughing cause i have to clean it off for the millionth time.
i gave up on tissues. im using a towel now ! atleast i can get a few wipes out of that before it needs to be washed !
My little Chloe has a bit of a cold with a irritated threat & runny nose but she seems to be getting better so it all good,
i'm sorry to hear about all these babies that are sick poor little darlings....

Hi Benandrewsmum. We call it the snot sucker too!!! Wow parenting brings out the class in everyone.. hehe. I never EVER imagined I could have long animated conversations with my husband about snot and poo and vomit and wee and *actually* find it interesting...!!!
As parents now, we are forever changed. ;) :)

Hi,
You may just want to check with a chemist, but my Mum always used a vaporiser during the night - and I have to say I still use it for my husband and I when we have colds. They are fantastic and really help with blocked noses and helps them sleep better during the night.
It will be the best investment you will ever make.

Hi Aleksander's Mum,
Have you tried using a Naturopath? :) My little one was suffering terribly with a combination of a recurring severe cold, a terrible reaction to immunisations, and a low grade bacterial throat infection (caused by the recurring cold). Medical treatments weren't helping at all (in fact, antibiotics and cold meds prescribed seemed to make him dramatically worse) and our GP wasn't taking us very seriously.
We found a local naturopath specialising in herbal medicines, and spent 2 hours with her at a wonderful initial consultation. She took a full medical history, examined our babe (probably more thoroughly than our GP ever had!), and prepared 3 different herbal preparations (some of which come straight from Blackmores but are made specifically to only be given on Naturopath prescription - so they're all "legit", not made in some backroom cauldron).
Since giving them to our little one, he improved dramatically, almost immediately. It's been 5 days now; he's so much better. We have a follow up appointment with the naturopath on Wednesday, but I can already see such a difference. The crying has almost completely stopped; the breathing is easier; trouble feeding is almost totally gone; waking hours are now spent laughing and playing; sleep is better...we have our babe back, and can enjoy him once more. :)
We also gave him some donated expressed breast milk during his illness, to boost his immune system. We believe that may have helped, too.
If you're in Melbourne, I can PM you with our naturopath's details. In any case, I highly recommend exploring this option, especially for recurring ills that traditional medicine doesn't seem to help. I was sceptical myself initially; I'm completely converted now. :) Can't rave enough.
For the nasal congestion, Fess Nasal spray is medicine free, and does wonders for our whole family when our noses are blocked/runny. Some essential oils in bub's room (ie: lavender for calming, eucalyptus for clearing congestion, etc) and some Baby Balsam on the sheets (out of bub's reach, don't want it going into the mouth!) and bub's chest can also help. And, if all else fails, as someone else said, there is a "snot sucker" (looks like a dropper, with a big rubber bulb on one end) - but it's usually best to stay out of the bub's cavities where possible! :)
Whatever you try, sending well baby vibes your way.

I have found "euky bear" chest rub (like vicks for little people) really helps clear their noses for sleep time.
You can get it from most chemist's, but test a bit on bub's skin first........................
