Hiya.

I am 27 weeks pregnant with baby #1 and am planning on using cloth nappies. Due to finances or lack thereof ;) we have chosen to go with terry-flats and prefolds.

Basically, I just wanted a run down of what I need to get and the best (and cheapest!) place to buy nice prefolds.

My list so far consists of (for a newborn):

-24 nappies all together to be washed every 2 days
-12 covers, ideally 4 PUL and 2/3 Wool
-Snappis!

Am I on the right track? I am thinking of buying about 10 prefolds (BBHs prefolds look fantastic and are really reasonably priced - any input on those?) and then using terry toweling for the rest. I have been told that wool works best for night so I will most likely only buy a few and use them for night time only.

If there is anything else I need to know, please tell me! I am aware that I'll have to use liners too and have no clue about them.. are they made biodegradable?

Clothie-newbie!

Okay - firstly congratulations on your pregnancy - not too long to go now!

I use fitteds mostly, so I can't really help you with the prefold department... although here is a link with a video of how to put one on! http://www.tinytots.com/how_to_videos.html

I guess you would know that not all prefolds can be snappied... but if you have a wrap you can just pad fold the prefold and lay the it inside the wrap and put it on... I have done this many times with Olivia when I am waiting for my fitteds to dry - she just wriggles around too much for me to put it on the other way.

There is also the issue of size with the prefolds - are you going to get all in a small size, or just buy more later?

Covers - 12 seems like alot to me... I have about 6 and it is enough.

I use terry towelling flats as spew rags (occasionally for nappies if the weather is really bad, or I have been lazy with the washing :)), and after 3 months they are already falling apart. So get a good brand, and they should last! I think the brand I have is actil... so don't get that brand!

You sound like you are on the right track though!!

Congrats on the pregnancy and good on you for choosing cloth!

My girlfriend used prefolds with her bub and she got cotton ones called Chinese Prefolds from Little Koala and they range from $2-3. She swore by them! Especially as you go through so many in those first weeks. She now uses them to stuff her pocket nappies. You could get a couple of the BBH flats for use over night - maybe a hemp booster to lay in the nappy would make it last overnight better? The BBH flats ARE good though. I like ours.
