View Full Version : Can't resettle himself at night..
My little man is 5 and a half months and has difficulty in resettluing at night time. He has always been a good sleeper at night until about 4 weeks ago, he now has a good nights sleep (resettling himself) followed by a couple of nights of waking 2 maybe 3 times. He can resettle through the day, but not consistiently at night. He is breastfed and I have added solids at dinner time, tried a night light and all that did was encourage him to play...... I am really at a loss with how to get him to resettle.
Would love any suggestions to help settle my little man.

Perhaps he is teething? My little one's sleeping habits went all haywire when the teeth started to make a move...
Do you have a music box or something like that? My bub has one that can be set for either 5 or 10 minutes and plays 3 different tunes. It also projects a little light show onto the ceiling at the same time. It has always helped him to settle - I go in and give him the dummy, tuck him in and a cuddle sometimes and then turn the music on and leave. He does a fine job of settling himself most of the time.
It may just be a phase - just keep persevering with the re-settling and maybe an extra feed? Sometimes my little one is a wee bit hungry in the early hours when he is going through a growth spurt.
Feel free to pm or add me to msn if you need a chat!
It's normal for babies to not be able to settle themselves, and also normal for them to change their habits on a regular basis. You're not doing anything wrong :)

NIGHTTIME PARENTING LESSON #2: Some babies need help getting back to sleep.
Some "resettlers" or "self-soothers" can go through this vulnerable period without completely awakening, and if they do wake up, they can ease themselves back into a deep sleep. Other babies need a helping hand, voice, or breast to resettle back into deep sleep. From these unique differences in sleep cycle design, we learn that one of the goals of nighttime parenting is to create a sleeping environment that helps baby go through this vulnerable period of nightwaking and reenter deep sleep without waking up.
