View Full Version : How long after emergency caesar?

My first dd was born in july. I had an emergency caesar, she'd inhaled some meconnium (not sure on the spelling...) and had to go into NICU. Initially I was just happy that she was OK and recovered well. But in talking to my ob and nurses after, they all said there should be at least two years between babies after an emergency c. Has anyone else been told this? Does that mean I can get pregrant 1 year and 3 months after her birth? Or do I have to wait 2 years before getting pregnant again?

i was told that if u r planning on vaginal birth it is best that there is at least 12 mths (18 even better) btwn bubs. this pregnancy took us by surprise (very long story) but dr said not to worry about it as there is a 12mth gap. but as i have already had an emergency c/s and then an elective one i have opted to hav c/s again but he has said i can try to vbac (vaginal birth after c/s) if i want.
good luck with your bub hope everything is going smoothly now.

I had 2yrs gap exactly from having my c section but i ended up having a vbac this time round anyway thank goodness. I hadnt hear that about 2yrs though, but i knew you shouldnt have them too close together. I think i heard something about 18mnths between c sections

I had an emergency c section in june and when i went for me 6 week check up my Ob checked me out and said that it was fine for me to fall pregnant straight away. We are TTC at the moment and my son is 7 months old. I have never heard anything about a 2 year gap.

Research - interdelivery intervals on the net. That is the term for what you are asking about.
Good Luck:thumbsup:
I've read every smerricle on the subject after my c/s.
Happy searching:)

Hi Ladies,

Thanks for all the input. Maybe they are all just being cautious in this lawsuit society! Not that I'm ready to TTC again, but it's good to know I'm not restricted to two years! She's only just 6 months and I hadn't thought about the 2nd one until I started reading the forums. Call me stupid, but it only just hit me that if I want them 'x' amount apart, I have to factor in the 9 months pregnancy and the trying time.

Does anyone know if it's easier to fall pregnant the second time? It took two goes for my DD, but I guess I get less fertile with age?

Nix06 I really feel the very worst part of my c/s was not the procedure itself or what I missed out on but how it's limited me to where I birth and when and how many times. As for TTC I don't know yet DS is only 3 months....

BTW here is some shameless motherly flaunting ...click (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o128/nats_017/BringSomePeanuts.jpg)

GL with you sounds like your getting clucky and are probably, from what i've read, good to go!

love that pic nats!!!!!

Nix06 if you check out my signature and do the maths you'll realise that my 2 are only 13 months apart, my dd was an emergency ceasar.

It took 6 goes to fall preg the first time so we didn't bother with any "protection" after having dd as I was breatfeeding etc and we thought it woul take longer to fall preg again.

HOW WRONG WERE WE!!!!!!!!!

I fell pregnant 1 week after making that decision.

and yes I had a vbac. At first i had no joy but when the supervising OB said it was fine then the middies etc were happy to treat me as a normal preg woman.

My first was emerg csect then fell preg 1y11m later.

Second was also emerg csect then fell preg 12 weeks after she was born! No direct problems from the csects close together.

lol, a bit like us!! it took so long to fall pg with the first 2 kids, and then one stupid condom later we have our 3rd! (less than 12 months later! lol)

but anyway

out of curosity, when did you all get told about things like future pgs ect.. after a c-sect? cause unless i have lost my brain completely i dont believe any doctor has said anything to me - after the op! hummm i might have to have a real good talk to the next doc i see!

Wow ladies, that's keen with the close bubbas!

Angelone, it was just after the birth. The ob came to see me and talk about what had happened, how I felt about it etc. I was just happy bub was getting better, so no hard feeling about the c/s. It was during that talk that she mentioned the 2 year thing. Another nurse mentioned it in passing a few days later, so thought it was normal?

Nats - great photo!

I didn't get told anything either  so it's interesting reading this because it's something I've been wondering as well.

Jodie, I haven't heard anyone mention the after pains, but if you start a new thread with that in the title, I bet someone in bubhub land would know!

It's so encouraging how many of you have been able to have bubs without waiting. Now all I have to do is get back in the saddle and I'll be set for number 2...

I was told that I had to wait 12 months before TRYING again (obviously in case I fell preggers straight away). At the time I was just 'NO WAY - NEVER AGAIN' - I didn't even consider the possibility of an emergency c-sect. A friends of mine when to a different hosp and they told her the exact same thing!

I was told I was fine to start trying as soon as hubby and I felt ready, no reason we should wait, I got the go ahead at my 6 week appt by the head of obs.

It's interesting the different time lenghts various Ob's advise.

I was told at my 6 month check up that I had to wait at least 12 months after my emergency c before falling pregnant. I was a littled floored to be honest as it hadn't entered my mind that there would be an advised waiting period to fall preganant again. A little dissappointed as I would love ttc for #2 right now but am heeeding the Obs advise for now and will wait unti DS is maybe 11 months and go from there.

My Doctor said at DD's 2 month immunisations that it is advisable to wait 12 months BETWEEN births. I guess it would be different if you had problems with the scar healing.

With regards to how long it takes for #2 I guess it would depend on circumstances. I fell preg with DD the first month off the pill. DD's almost 7 months now (born in July) and we have been trying for 3 months.

Maybe it's because I'm actually trying this time? You know what they say... Everything happens quicker when you're not trying to make it happen...

I was hoping for as small a gap as possible... So far it will be at least 16 months...

 Hello I was just reading your threads and I just had a emergency caesarean on the 20th Jan at King Eddy hospital in Perth and was told to wait at least 12 months and that I would prob have to have caesarean but I dont want to wait to long dont want a big gap in between mmmm I just dont know.....

It's generally advisable to get a 2nd opinion... I do actually have a new Doctor now but haven't asked about it, will do when I go in to get DD's hips re-checked. I know of a "girl" who had twins in July via c-sec and is expecting in July again and she has been approved for a VBAC - basically 12 months to the day... I haven't noticed any OB's in my area, I will need to look that up if all goes to plan... I'm not sure, maybe different States and professions have different ideals??

The gap between Jess and "dingle" is 26 months but my original obestrician said that as I had an emerg c-sect (due to pre-eclampsia) that he wouldn't let me VBAC if I had a baby before 2 years due to my c-sect scar (but my oriignal obny is one of the highest rating c-sect births in Perth). But my current obny said each case will be different

My OB discussed our plans for more kids when DS1 was born. We said we planned to have our kids 18 months apart and he said that was fine. He told me you are often told to wait 2 years between births to ensure the scar is properly healed- but that 18 months would be fine. He basically said that once the scar has healed properly (which I got the impression would happen within 8 weeks - but not sure how accurate my memory on that is) you can have kids any time.

The doctor I had when I had DD said (before I was discharged) to wait at least a year before falling pregnant again and that I should be alright to go for a VBAC next time. She admitted that in hindsite a ceasar was probably not needed with DD as DD was alot smaller than she anticipated (lol- she was smaller than I anticipated too- I was huge!)

I had an emergency C-section in july 2003, I am sure I was told after that to wait AT LEAST 12 months before falling pregnant again. I had my second in November last year by elective c-section, and have recently found out im now pregnant again!! I would of concieved this one when my baby girl was only about 8 weeks old!!! Sooooo this is defienntly far to close for my liking, in more ways then one haha, But i asked my doctor and he said its fine,,,,,, im not too sure tho. I cant wait to have my first appointment with the midwives in a few weeks so I can see what they say!

I had a emergency C-section with my first son because he was too big to get out naturally, i went through a 24 hour labour leading up to it, 6 months later and still breastfeeding fell pregnant with our second son and opted for another cesarean. I have heard as well that you should wait 2 years but i am living proof that you dont have to wait.

That "girl" is me :smiliedance:

This is going to be a long post, seeing as I was mentioned may as well tell you my story.

Yes I had a caesarean in July 2006 due to breech babies. I fell pregnant again a few weeks after having the surgery. Unfortunately, both sacs weren't viable and a D&C was given.

A few weeks later I conceived again (in case you are wondering yes contraception was used) but didn't find out until I was almost 6 weeks pregnant.

I am now 22.3 wks pregnant and after everything that has happened and all my body has gone through, I not long ago received the all clear for a VBAC.

My advice is it is best to discuss things over with your doctor first. A lot of factors are involved and need to be considered (ie. the position of your internal scar, how well you recovered, etc etc) They know your history and hold the key to all the answers you wish to seek.

Good luck :D

Hi,
I had an emergency cesaer and 16mths later had another one. The Ob wasn't worried and I was allowed to trial the scar in the second labour for 18hours and no complications.
